Razor Diesel SummerSlam 94

Killercam

Occasional Pre-Show
This SummerSlam had a good card. Although the Taker vs Taker was a flop it was built well enough to sell a WrestleMania. There was also Bret and Owen in a classic cage match, but the match that stole the show was Razor Ramon with Walter Peyton (in Chicago) versus Diesel with HBK. If you don't remember the build up to this match I'm not going to go through it all but it was as good as it gets. Unfortunately this match got stuck pretty early in the card, however if you go back and watch the whole event this match got the best crowd reaction of the night, in fact the pops were as impressive as many of Mania main events. Looking back at the crowd reaction to this match it doesn't surprise me that these two went on to form arguably the most important faction in wrestling history. I believe this was also arguably both of their best match in their WWF tenure. My questions are is this the greatest IC Title match ever and was this match ultimately the one that linked these two forever??

With matches like Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect, Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith, Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat, Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels, among many others I highly doubt anyone else will say this was the greatest IC title match ever. It was a good match but it's never talked about so I don't think it's responsible for linking these two together. Leaving the WWF for WCW at the same time is what links them together. I'm glad you brought this up as I like threads about old school matches that are rarely mentioned. I really enjoyed the match (I was there live) but I don't think it's as significant as you think. Don't let that bother you though. If you really enjoyed it that's all that matters.

I have long believed that Razor vs. Diesel was the most underrated match in WWF history. That might sound bold, but if one factors in the characters involved, the long term build (pre-Wrestlemania X in fact), and the hot crowd reaction, this match was an all out classic. That match could have main evented any Wrestlemania from 1 to 28 and stolen the show.

Razor and Diesel, Hall and Nash, whatever you want to call them, were among the most compelling wrestling personalities of the 90s. There weren't simply wrestlers, they were revolutionaries. In an era that many have classified as lame and cartoonish, Razor, Diesel, and their little buddy Shawn Michaels both made the WWF cool again and elevated the Intercontinental Championship to world title status. Most impressively, they managed to make WCW programming into detination television. With all their collective charisma considered, it's not surprising that Razor and Diesel brought the WWF fans to their feet at Summerslam 1994.

The fans in Chicago were awesome that night. I know CM Punk and John Cena get credit for igniting a hot Chicago crowd. Well, I would contest that the combination of Walter Peyton, Razor Ramon, and the buzz surrounding the first major event held at the United Center produced a fever pitch atmosphere that rivals any wrestling match ever broadcast from Chicago.

Majority of people in IWC have a bias towards smaller technical wrestlers & forget that big man wrestling is also an art. 6ft 6in Razor Ramon vs. 6ft 11in Diesel was a great match.

The 3 top greatest IC Title matches were as followed

1. Ricky Steamboat Vs Randy Savage WM III

2. Bret Hart Vs Mr. Perfect Summer Slam 1991

3. Bret Hart Vs Davy Boy Smith Summer Slam 1992

Now those were great matches .

The Ramon Diesel Match made me tired there was not any good counter moves like the Savage Steamboat Match or Hart Perfect Match.

I love topics like this about matches that don't get talked about very often. Summerslam anthology is next on my list of purchases, and this match is one I almost forgot about. I loved the whole Diesel/Razor feud with HBK kind of in the middle of things. I think this was a great match for two big men, and I agree that we as fans don't often give the bigger guys credit for putting on a great match. Look at Big Show/Sheamus from HIAC this past year. No one expected anything from that match, and frankly, it stole the show. I wouldn't go as far to say Diesel/Razor was the best IC title match ever, but it was damn good. There is just too many other great IC matches to say it was the best, however the fans were really into this match and feud in general. It was definitely the best match of that show IMO. A great forgotten match up though, and a great thread to discuss.

why would you want to buy any Anthologies, to name a few issues, they are edited to get rid of Chris Benoit and references to WWF are edited or blurred out not to mention the music is replaced with generic crap even for stuff that was made by Jim Johnston and stuff they have always had the rights to.
Really ruins the overall feel of nostalgia.

Trust me, i have the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 20th anniversary anthologies and they are woefull.

Better to find on ebay the original VHS and DVD's which are still available out there.

as for the original question, the match was just ok, Diesel was still just a thug with little in ring aptitude. Razor was on his game as he was for most of his WWF tenure but the rest of the match was forgetable.

lol, it was just an average match - nothing special about it at all which is why it isn't remembered.

Owen vs Bret was a classic. To say Hall and Nash stole the show is an absolute joke. No offence.

Agree with this. No way in hell did Diesel vs Razor overshadow the Hart's cage match, which many think is the greatest cage match of all time (or at least in the WWF).

Saying their match was the greatest IC title match ever is verging on ludicrous as well

they are edited to get rid of Chris Benoit
Nope, they aren't. All of Chris Benoit's matches are in the anthologies.

Diesel-Razor from '94 was really good. It didn't steal the show -- Bret-Owen was a better match -- but the IC title match was damn entertaining. Hall and Nash always had great chemistry and this match is proof of that. Excellent match and it is sad most don't think about it.

I have to say Brain, I agree with most of what you said. But whilst I don't think WWF really needed Razor & Diesel to stay. In fact, just the opposite as they were becoming difficult to manage by all accounts, and look at what they did with WCW in the end! They, along with Hogan, Russo and Bischoff, destroyed the company.

Best thing they did for the WWF!
