Epitaph if your looking into those that define a genre than you definitely need to look up some Ice Cube. He is a lyrical master who has stood the times of Biggie, 2pac, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, etc and is still a great artist.
I'm a big fan of the West Coast as their beats are more street and gritty to where East Coast is more of a G funk beat more uplifting. As Crock was saying Dr Dre is one of the best producers rap has to offer, he is a beat making king who has mixed some of the greatest rappers music that is still loved and listened to today.

I obviously can't be the only person to agree with this. He has stood the test of time and is still one of the best. He played at Newcastle (Australia) and the place was going fucking mental.
I personally like Big L he was (may he rest in peace) an in your face style rapper with the uncanny ability to hit the punchline perfectly. I've got a great deal of respect for L.
