P.T. and Survival Horror Games

three count bout

Beauregard Dallas
Has anyone played the P.T. demo for PS4? It's a survival horror game that is actually an upcoming Silent Hill game made by Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear Solid fame and Guillermo Del Toro from Pans Labyrinth and Hell Boy.
I played it with the lights off and got a few cool jump scares. The overall atmosphere is creepy and tense. It's gotten a bit of buzz since it's release and seems promising.

There seems to be a lot of Survival Horror games being announced like Alien: Isolation (which actually looks to be a decent Aliens game), and The Evil Within both dropping in October.

I've never really been too immersed in the genre but I have respect for it as it can't be easy to create a scary experience in a video game. The one thing I liked about P.T. was that it carried a sense of dread without any blood or gore (at least as far as I got) it was all done through atmosphere, sound effects, and the uneasy feeling that something might be right behind you.

So has anyone played P.T.? Anyone excited about any of the upcoming Survival Horror games? If you like or hate the genre you can also talk about that here.

The Evil Within looks cool. It's by the OG director of Resident Evil back in 96. It's going to be gore heavy though which is fine with me. Alone In The Dark is also getting a reboot. As is Haunted House. As someone who played Haunted House on the Atari back in the day that just sounds hilarious.

The Amnesia games are also amazing. The same company also made the Penumbra games which 2 out of 3 were great as well. And best of all they are on sale typically three to four times a year. I bought the first one for 99 cents. And have seen them bundled together often.

I'd throw the Metro games into this genre also. New bullets are currency, something that was lost on me early in the first game and I accidentally used them. It was not cool.

And the first three Silent Hill games are as close to perfect as any survival horror games can get. And I'd put the REmake up there. I bought a gamecube just to play it, then got it again on the Wii and will play the HD remake of the REmake when it comes to PC next year.

I don't usually play this sort of game but it looks really cool. From the short videos I saw they did a really good job of setting the tone.

If I had a PS4 I probably wouldn't buy it but I'd rent it or borrow it from someone and give it a play.

I think I played the first Silent Hill game maybe. I'm pretty sure I played at least one.

And I played what I thought was a lot of the Resident Evil series but a bunch of weird ones starting popping up and I didn't care for them.

Silent Hill 2 still stands as one of my favorite games to date. But the real cusp of where it's at IMO is on the internet with a lot of up-and-coming developers.

Look for a game called Fran Bow, for example. It's a seriously creepy point-and-click adventure with survival horror elements. There are several games like that. You look past the endless Slenderman clones and you can get some really good creepy games. You just have to hunt around a bit, that's all.

http://www.vgperson.com/games/ These survival horror RPGs rank among some of my favorite free games. I cannot recommend Ib highly enough... it's an absolute must-play. It's scary, it's got survival elements, puzzle elements, storyline elements, it's creepy, it's immersive, and some of the artwork in the game is just amazing for the style they were using. There are some other good ones on there... Hello Hello is innovative for what it is, and Misao would be better if it wasn't for a slew of cheap, albeit entertaining, instant kills...

And a post-ending series of 'missions' that really screw with the original message and feel.

But if you want a great survival horror game that's free and really immerses you in its world, with the music, the style, etc, I highly recommend Ib.

A playthrough by the always-entertaining Markiplier. But I recommend playing the game yourself.
