"Whiskey In A Jar" is one of those songs that travels down the line of performers that gets covered many upon many times, where the exact origins of the song might be unknown. This song is considered to have come from Ireland & is a popular Irish song. For a full link of the song & its history, wikipedia is always the best source to get some basic knowledge of the subject. Here is a link:

So, out of all the different versions of the song that have been covered by every band thus far... which one is the best?

I am going to have to give the nod to Thin Lizzy. These guys took the song from the underground & the unknown straight into the mainstream audience. Not to mention that they did the song to a great standard as well. If it weren't for them covering the song, the versions of the song by various artists like Gary Moore, U2 & Metallica [whom won a grammy for their performance] would not have been done to the excellence presented.

Maybe I'm weird, but I fucking LOVE Irish folk music. I mean, you don't have to be into this kind of thing to appreciate the musical talent here and just how much FUN it is. I defy you to watch that video and not tap your foot.

Metallica's version was the first one that I listened to and it was great, but when I started listening to a couple other versions of the song throughout the post Metallica listening, I really thought their version was subpar. Thin Lizzy is the best version of all the bigger versions out there, but the Pouce Coupe Irish Boys did a good version when I was a young buck.

I'm going to also have to go with the Thin Lizzy cover. Thin Lizzy were such an underrated band, definitely one of the best hard rock acts of the 70s, and they simply never get the love they should. That said, the Dubliners version is probably second best, as Dexter mentioned it. I'm a sucker for folk as well, and that's a damn good rendition of a classic song.

But I've grown up on the Thin Lizzy version, so of course it's going to get the nod from me here. I absolutely hated Metallica's cover.
