One Year Ago:

In a dark, musty hotel room, Blade stands at the window, the beautiful sunset illuminating him from behind. He wears a suit, something he is clearly uncomfortable in.

Across from him is another man in a suit, dark sunglasses, slicked back hair, and some kind of ear piece connected to a monitor on his belt. In his hand, pointed at Blade, a gun.

Blade: Il suffit de me laisser partir. (Just let me go.)

Man : Vous avez trahi le ministre. Il n'est pas heureux. (You screwed the minister. He’s not happy.)

Blade : Il m'a trahi premier ! Il avait une chance de vous annoncer la politique dans son discours final et il n'a pas le prendre! (He betrayed me first. He had a chance to announce the policy in his final speech and he didn't take it!)

Man: Il n'allait pas l'annoncer qu'après il est entré dans le bureau! Il ne voulait pas discuter de quelque chose tellement de divisions avant qu'il n'arrive même le vote! (He wasn't going to announce it until after he got into office! He wouldn't discuss something so divisive before he even gets the vote!)

Blade: Nous avions un accord, et il n'est pas allé jusqu'au bout. Alors je lui ai fait payer. (We had an agreement, and he didn't go through with it. So I made him pay.)

Man: Oui, vous l'avez fait. Et c'est pourquoi je l'élimination de vous. (Yes, you did. And that’s why I’m disposing of you.)

Blade’s hands tremble as the agent pulls back the hammer of his gun…

Present Day:

"And that’s what happened the last time I was in France." says Blade, seemingly finishing his story.

Blade stands in the same hotel room he did one year ago, pacing back and forth, except he now wears his casual attire and its Becky Serra sitting across from him, intrigued by Blade’s story.

Blade takes out a cigarette and lights it up, taking a deep drag as he looks out the window. Becky grows impatient and waves at him to get his attention.

"Well?" utters Becky, on the edge of her seat.

Blade looks back at Becky, unsure what she’s asking about.

"Well what?"

"What happened with the government agent !? He was pointing a gun in your face!" she pleads.

"Oh. I don’t really remember." Blade shrugs, turning back to the window.

"You cannot be serious right now!" she shouts at him.

"What? Why?" he asks, taken aback by her sudden change in demeanour.

"Because you drifted off right at the climax of the story! And it’s you, so I actually believe that it happened! Tell me what happened!" she demands.

"Well," he begins distractedly, "I didn't get shot in the face."

"You don't say" she grumbles back.

Blade stops his pacing only put his cigarette out before starting again.

"That's getting really annoying, can you please just sit down?"

"I'd rather not. I'm trying to stay away from chairs for a while."

"I... You... What?" she stammers.

"Well, this week I'm going to get the hell beaten out of me by Matt Tastic, regardless of whether or not I win. I will have plenty of chairs smashed against my skull, spine and stomach. And last week on Meltdown..."

Becky goes silent, shifting uncomfortably in her chair.

"Triple X came out of nowhere. Like everyone else, I thought he had retired. But... Why me?" he asks, a little sadness in his voice.

"I really don't know, Blade." she replies softly.

"We never really crossed paths, me and X, apart from those two matches around Kingdom Come. But I respected him. Hell, any other time, I'm sure we would've been friends. Yet he decides to return by attacking me."

Becky can't find anything to say, merely giving Blade a sympathetic look.

"I have been in some genuinely scary moments in my life. I've had a number of guns pointed at me. I still have a scar on my shoulder from when I was shot. But through all of those times, panic never took over. I ran on instinct and adrenaline, and I got through it. But with Triple X, I'm worried..."

"But you don't even know why he did it..."

"That's what is so worrying. I'm used to acting on instinct, but this time, I've had days to think about it. Time to analyse and re-analyse and I don't know what Triple X is doing or why he's doing it. That's what is worrying me." he finishes.

"I don't envy you this week. You have to face the Mayhem legend in his own environment while looking over your shoulder for X."

"Tell me about it," he sighs, "booking me in a Mayhem match is basically begging X to attack me again. Meanwhile, Tastic will be trying to smash my skull in with anything he can find."

"Well, he hasn't been in the Mayhem division for a while, maybe he'll be rusty." Becky suggests.

"You're joking, right? This is the guy that defined Mayhem in WZCW. Between the Mayhem Title being retired, and the apparent inferiority complex that he's recently grown, he's going to want to put on a good show. It'll be like the Hunger Games out there."

"Manly reference."

"I'm not ashamed, Becky. Now get out of here before you draw too much attention. It's ridiculous, I leave America, thankful to be away from the manhunt for a while, only to find out that I'm still a wanted man here. The French really know how to hold a grudge, am I right?"

Becky gets up and heads for the door with a shake of her head.

"I am not touching that comment with a ten foot pole." she mutters to herself.

"What was that?"

"Uh, good luck this week. And, y'know, be careful. I know there's two guys wanting to cave your skull in this week, but don't forget to be on your toes outside the ring, too."

"Don't worry, there's no way I'm going to be caught any time soon, they have no idea who I am..."

5,000 miles away, in Los Angeles, a detective sits at his cluttered desk, papers strewn out in front of him. Looking frustrated, he rifles through the papers, as if looking for something he's missed.

Suddenly his phone rings. He picks it up and answers as he continues to look through papers.

"Detective Hawthorne." he mumbles distractedly.

As he hears whoever is one the other end, he looks up from his papers, listening intently.

"Yeah, that's right... Wait, you... You know his identity?"

Detective Hawthorne quickly grabs a pen, pulls off the cap with his teeth and gets ready to write on his notebook.

"Tell me everything you know."

It's raining at a bus stop. Matt Tastic has recently lost to Theron Daggershield. And before that, an Elite X Title match to SHIT. Matt is backed into a corner once again, thinking how to get back on track. He desires a rematch with SHIT but rules prevent that from happening. Now what? Matt is set to face Blade at Total Mayhem. Where the rules favor him. But after his last showing, who knows?

Matt: I don't know how. But something is holding me back.

* Thunder cackles *

Matt: I know it. I can do better. What's making me lose? Dammit all. DAMMIT ALL!!

Matt's mind is enraged by the losses. He feels he deserves more. All the hard work he's put seems to go completely unnoticed. 4 years but no one cares. The roster continues to change. But Matt still remains the One Big Constant.

Matt: …..man........... Ev-- Even the Mayhem Division is gone.........

4 reigns. Once the longest reigning champion. Matt's history with the Division is very hard to ignore. But now he's outlived it. While he remains the same person since his last reign over 3 years ago, the division reaches it's final chapter. At Total Mayhem, WZCW will give tribute to the unique asset it once had and there's a notable discrepancy to it's advertised card. Of such a long list of notable wrestlers, there's only 3 that are active competitors. Ace Stevens, the champion Vega and Matt himself. Everyone else is but a thing of the past now. Much like Matt seems to be.

Matt: Maybe it's time for me to.............. give it up..................

Matt seems to look more and more like a relic that never had much value as the days pass and he remains unaccomplished. The more matches he takes part in, the more he seems to look like mere enhancement for others. Funny enough, his opponent seems to be the same case.

Matt: …............Blade............

At around the same time as Matt dominated the Mayhem Division, Blade struck out challenging for the EurAsian Championship. It took him very long to do it, but eventually he did. But much like Matt, the days of Blade's continued momentum seem to have passed him by. Now he seems to simply be a springboard for the likes of Isabel Stone and The Beard.

Matt: Blade..... Your little Robin Hood act. Another one in the long list of parlor tricks used to make the idiot fans clap like seals. Another lousy act to rally support and cover your inabilities. Are you gonna shoot people with an arrow next? You're a moron if you think giving shit away to poor people helps them. You'd be willing to hand out all your earnings to some bum on the street who probably ended up there because he was too high to care. You would be a crutch for his addictions and not even care. Give it up. It's obviously just some cheap act to get fans to cheer for you. You think you're some suave, lovable rogue when in reality you're just a jackass trying to find a way to stick out. Just admit it. When you came back you were overwhelmed by the ridiculous cavalcade of inmates this lousy asylum hired and feared being left behind again.

2 men looking for a chance to redeem themselves and climb back to their fallen glory. Neither has reached the pinnacle though. But Total Mayhem seems to be perfect for Matt to win. Can he?

Matt: Jeff and that lousy walking cereal box may have fluked their way past me, but you can't beat me at my own game. Mayhem is my mistress. Mayhem is my servant. The powers that be can take away the Division but they can never take away the success I had in it. I'm the one true king. I've outlasted and beaten and outlived any idiot that ever stupidly dared to say they can be more hardcore than me. Blade, you can't thief your way out of this one. I'll squash you like the little, disgusting cockroach you are. And then................

Matt cannot let it past him how he lost to SHIT. The fact that he lost to someone who by his mere body shape alone shouldn't be able to logically beat him, eats him alive. Matt battled with everything he had and refused to give up. But a mere freak blow was enough to end him. Matt is a human being. His body is fueled by what he consumes and has to breath to maintain his stamina. But SHIT is just some soul- less machine that runs on electricity and nothing more. One's and zeroes cannot tell it to feel happy for being a champion. Algorithms can't tell it how to have a sense of accomplishment.

Matt: I'll get back at you. Why? Why you? How is this lousy piece of crap living my dream? Why is this load of garbage getting the attention I want? Why is this disgusting excuse for a pro wrestler the success story I always wanted to be? I train day and night to be the best but it's you that gets all the halation and admiration. All the support and credit that I want, you get. I'll get you. I don't know how, but I'll get you and when I do, I'll unplug you. You don't deserve it. DAMMIT, YOU DON'T DESERVE IT! …...................but how do I get you?............................

As Matt calms down and sits, the bus arrives. The answer lies in front of him. A banner on the bus advertises the upcoming WZCW shows. Particularly, Total Mayhem. More specifically, it's main event. Vega vs Red Mask.

Matt: Red Mask..............

….................

…..........................

…............Red...............

….......Mask............................

His anger and frustration turns to delight as the realization sets in. And the familiar cheshire grin adorns his face.

Matt: A..................red...............Mask!

The smirk turns to a laugh. A familiar laugh.

Matt: ….......ahahahahaha........... A red mask.................. Hahahahahahahahahaha!!! A Red Mask!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Heheheheheheh............ Blade is about to get more Mayhem than he expected....... HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Something has inspired Matt. But what it seems to be is something that will have to wait until Total Mayhem to be seen.

A red mask.............
