I'd say somewhere in the middle. Rarely are dictators a good thing but they are good for a few things: number one they offer stability. Look at the middle east sicne Sadaam has been gone. It's even more chaotic than usual because he's not there to maintain order. Second Franco was indeed a dictator, but it goes to show how poor of a condition Spain was in to allow someone to come to power like that. It's the Hitler issue: when things are bad, the first person to step up to the mic will get the people's support no matter how bad they are.

C'mon KB, you're not serious are you? Of course a dictatorship has stability, it's a government based on absolute and total control of every aspect of it's citizen's lives. Ben Franklin said it best:

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

The middle east is really not any worse then it has ever been. Since we're in wars in two different Middle Eastern countries, the exposure that violence gets from the mass media is extensive. Twenty times as many people were killed in the 1980's in the ME (especially Iran and Iraq) under tyrannical rule then are being killed now.

I won't even go into Israel-Palestine because that discussion is long and tedious and simply overwhelming.

I think alot of Franco's rise to power had more to do with a general reaction to the success of militant fascism in Italy (prior to WWII of course) and Nazism in Germany. Nationalism, much like Communism after WWII, was at the peak of it's growth around the globe. Also Franco's rise to power had quite a bit to do with the Spanish military as well as the rest of Europe and America basically turning a blind eye to anything going on in Spain at all.

I love it. One minute we're talkin' about our favorite pornstars, the next we're discussing the rise of nationalism in Spain. Only on WZ.

That's true but at the same time, none of those other dictatorships lasted for forty years. It's true that America turned a blind eye to Spain for a long time, but no one else that I've ever heard of looked at them either. That indicates to me that something was different tehre and maybe it wasn't as bad as the others were.
