Hey guys. This is an idea that I have been considering for the last couple of days and I think it would be a nice Christmas game to try and attempt. You of course know the rules of Secret Santa that exist in the real world outside these forums. In order to work on the forums I have made a number of slight modifications. I contacted one of the admins about this and I dont think he has any problem with it taking place.
The aim of this is to try and to promote activity in parts of the site which might not normally get it. I know myself that a major gripe I have is when I put a lot of time and effort into a thread or a post only to find that it receives no replies. This of course is probably not something which occurs to everyone, but I am sure everyone has at least one thread or post somewhere on these forums which they feel did not receive the requisite attention. Hopefully through this, we can attempt to remedy this.
The procedure for participating in this is fairly simple. Anyone who is interested in granting a gift of a well considered reply to any thread on this site (be aware it could be any thread, one thats well out of your comfort zone) and would like to receive one in kind to a thread of theirs please sign up below with a link to the thread to which you would like greater attention to be given. In a weeks time I will then randomly assign everyone who has signed up a Santa and send them the thread to which they will be posting on via PM.
Important points to remember.
1. This kind of plan relies quite heavily on the honour system, ie that a poster will not abuse it by posting a single sentence joke reply as his gift and receive an essay in return. There is unfortunately no way that I a noob here can do anything to prevent this bar I suppose naming and shaming which isnt something I would like to do. So please only sign up if you are willing to write a well considered post in perhaps any section of the forums. Reap what you sow and all that. This is an entirely voluntary project too, and in the spirit of present receiving please dont complain either about the gift which you have received. Not everyone is going to receive a mod or a renowned poster as their Santa- in fact its much more likely to be a noob like me
2. The allocation of the person you will be making a post to will be completely random. I have no idea of the different feuds and rivalries that exist here so to attempt to prevent against these would beyond my control. Please dont make any of these presents flames, or attempts to score off someone. Oh yeah and once the allocation is made its final, you are not allowed to change the person you are gift giving too.
3. I will be keeping the identities of the Santas secret unless I have to, just because I think it makes the gift more special. The recipient might not know that the reply they have got is due to their post finally receiving attention, or their gift. Of course this is only my own thoughts- if you wish to announce that your post is your gift, feel free to do so.
4. The closing date for this will be on Sunday at 12.00 PM GMT (the UK and Irish time zone) in order to give me some time to allocate Santas. Expect your PM within the next week.
5. Finally I know that some of you may be a bit askance that I am running this but I am going to try my best to make this a success and TM has agreed to help me too if it becomes necessary.
