NSL's Mainstream Rock Thread

Life's A Bitch, And Then You Mosh
I know I've devoted most of my time and efforts to listening to non-mainstream rock, but I am still a big fan of some bands that you hear on the radio everyday. Bands like Three Days Grace, 3 Doors Down, Breaking Benjamin, Hinder, Linkin Park, and so many others. This thread is dedicated to talk about these bands, since there really isn't a place on here for them.

I'll start it all with Linkin Park. They have a lot of haters out there right now, and it's mostly uncalled for. They write really good music, and have some of the best lyrics out there. For the better part of a decade, they've been the biggest rock band in the world, and can sell out anywhere, at any time. Their albums all go multi-platinum, which is bigger than it should be in the days of piracy and iTunes.

I like linkin park, but I really don't like their newer sound. They made to great albums Hybrid Theory and Meteora. Each which were great and had that unique linkin park sound. With minutes to midnight while it was a decent album didn't sound like linkin park. I know they were trying something different, but to me it was there uniqueness that made them good to me. I still like them, but wish they could go back to that older sound...

I agree, but I still like the newer stuff. Hybrid Theory is by far their best album. Meteora took some time to grow on me, but it did, and I love it. Their really old school stuff, when the band's name was Hybrid Theory is also very good. I don't know if you've heard it, but look up High Voltage and Step Up for a good idea of what it sounded like.

I keep hearing their new stuff is "too emo" to be any good. That's people just generalizing it, and not giving it a chance.

I never thought that it was to emo... i just really thought that they tried to change their sound for no reason... They were extremely successful with their first to albums. I didn't see why they need to change it. I do like their new song for transformers. Because they have that old school remix in the middle like they did in their first couple of albums.

I haven't heard it, i'll have to look it up...

The first time I ever saw them in concert, was on the first Projekt Revolution tour with Cypress Hill and Adema. It was a fucking great show. That was the first I ever heard of the really old stuff. It has a big hip-hop influence, but that's because Shinoda was doing most of the writing.

Now, to the real reason I made this thread. Godsmack. My favorite band ever, and they now have a new album coming out soon. Their new single, Whiskey Hangover ios fucking amazing. They truly are one of the great rock bands of our generation.

In my opinion, Nickelback is without a doubt the best band out there right now. Not just mainstream, but period. Those guys are unbelievably awesome.

Just kidding, X. I wrote that just for you, buddy. :icon_razz:

But my God Nickelback does suck ass. And it's really the first band you have to think about when it comes to mainstream rock, because they're the most popular band there is right now. You can't watch a series of commercials without eventually hearing a piece of one of their shitty songs. It's ridiculous.

Anyway... I really enjoy System of a Down, 3 Doors Down, Blink 182, Three Days Grace, AFI, 30 Seconds to Mars (lay off, I'm a Jared Leto mark) and even some Hinder. But I guess that's it. Oh, and I use to love Linkin Park too for the record, but their last album was shit, in my opinion.

System Of A Down is definitely on the outskirts of mainstream, but definitely a great band. They're live shows are a little lax, but they're still great to pop in and rock out to.

I'd be hesitant to call AFI or 30 Seconds To Mars mainstream either. AFI is probably more emo/screamo, and 30 Seconds To Mars...well, I got nothing. They're metal, but not. They're definitely rock. But, I don't know about mainstream. I am a huge fan though, and wish that I could see them live. Leto is a great crossover, and is one of the rare few to do it well.

Sadly, blink182 has lumped themselves into this group, because they're nowhere near punk right now.

As I type all this, Flyleaf comes on. Another great rock band. They're one of the best bands I've seen live, and Lacey's voice could bring peace to the middle east, I'm sure of it. Great band.

Damn, how could I forget about Flyleaf? I remember when "Fully Alive" was released... I played that shit non-stop for what had to be a couple of weeks. I fucking love that song. Also, "Cassie" was another favorite of mine from them. Definitely a great band. I haven't liked a female vocalist as much as I like the lead singer of Flyleaf since Alanis Morisette, actually.

And Seether is another band I like a little thinking about it. Also, Papa Roach is hit or miss, but they're alright too. Oh and Staind is awesome, too, in my opinion.

I actually saw Seether headline a show that Flyleaf was on, and it was easily one of the best crowds I've ever been a part of. Between singing along, and just having fun, it was insane. The venue was great also, and that always helps.

I've been a huge Papa Roach fan for a long time. They may be my favorite non-metal band out there. They don't really have any bad songs. Their newer stuff is leaning too much towards Hinder, but it still works for them. And, I like Hinder, but it really isn;t Papa Roach's style.

Staind has always been great too. I prefer the first album over anything else, but they're the oinly band I know of that can cover Pink Floyd and Pantera in the same night.

Flyleaf is a great band. One of the best underrated bands. I really like the band Dead Poetic don't know if you've heard of them, but they are a solid band. Mainly on the outskirts of the rock seen, but none the less a solid band.

NSL have you heard of August Burns red? if so what do you think about them?

To try and attract some more people, I'll turn discussion to the "older" mainstream bands, like Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and STP. There's no doubt, that without them, we wouldn't have half the bands today that we do. They influenced everything that rock has become, and to that...:worship:

I like them, but don't know a whole lot from them, as far as song titles. They're probably a bit more fitting in the screamo/hardcore thread than here though.

I don't know if they count as "rock", but I love me some Kings of Leon. Never heard of them before "Sex on Fire" was played on Gossip Girl. It became my addiction, so I illegally downloaded the rest of their album.

Use Somebody is also great, and they now have become super successful. I think they are more credible then Nickelback, while still being "pop friendly". It's a shame that they are just blowing up now, since everyone says this is their worse album yet. Notion is another great song too! The lead singers voice is awesome, really unique yet "mainstream".

I heard this band on the radio the other day, they're called Cavo, pretty good band... I don't think they have come out with a cd yet, but the song I heard was kick ass.

Only thing that i've heard from pop evil is 100 in a 55. I like the song, but I haven't heard much other than that....

The song you're referencing is Champagne. Great song. If the rest of their stuff is similar to that, I'll be a fan. If it's not, and I fear this, than it'll be tough. Hinder came out as this generation's Poison, or Motley Crue, and now there's an influx of copycats.

Anybody ever heard of POP EVIL? They have a few good songs, I don't know much about them tho.

100 In A 55 is a great song, and they pull off the sound really well. I'd have to hear more before making a clear judgment though.

Anyone heard of Halestorm or Forever Ouevre? Halestorm sings a song called I Get Off that's pretty amazing, but the video shows why they haven't made it big yet. The singer can't lip sync for her life, but the song is still kick ass. Forever Ouevre sings a song called First Stone, and it's surprising me that they haven't hit it big nationally yet.

Halestorm is from my area, and Forever Ouevre's drummer is from Breaking Benjamin, so they're huge around here.

Halestorm is really good. I like the song, but like you said she lip syncs and it's bad..

She does all the vocals for the album, and live, but she does lip sync in the video, and it's pretty bad.

She's still fucking smoking though. I've heard bits of the rest of their album, and it's all good stuff. They can definitely be a fresh face on the scene, and inject some estrogen into the typical radio line up. If you watch some live clips from them, she's almost as good live as she is on the CD, and that's a tough feat to pull off...

Favorite. Band. Everrrrr. But seriously, though. I'm all about grunge, especially Pearl Jam. I own all their albums, save the new one, and have only been disappointed with one (Riot Act. Horrible record, Eddie definately wasn't feeling it.) AIC and STP, in my opinion were great, most of the time.

Having said that, anybody else down with the Saliva? Josey Scott's voice, and the guitar work are amazing together. By far one of the better bands to come out of the late 90's and early 2000's, at least I think so.
