New Orleans Saints ran an illegal bounty against opposing players from 2009-2011

Posted about this in the sports thread.

Jesus Christ, the Saints are fucked. I mean seriously? Watch them pull out the "Everyone's Doing It" bullshit just like the Pats did during spygate.

The 49ers said they came out head hunting against the Saints, bragging about Pierre Thomas' concussion in that game. And the Giants admitted to trying to purposely hurt Kyle Williams, yet the Saints are being singled out here? Give me a break.

Darren Sharper is denying it. And I'll believe him for now over that douchebag Gregg Williams, who not only cost the Saints another Super Bowl with his horrible play calling, but is now trying to ruin the franchise to save his own ass since he isn't here anymore.

And if the Saints are guilty, then yeah... they deserve punishment since the rules are the rules, though I still don't like how standards come into play when money is involved. You can see other teams/players doing this constantly, but since there isn't any 'proof' that money played a factor in it, they receive very little to zero punishment, and now the Saints might get serious fines, suspensions, and draft picks taking away from them because of this? Pathetic. Plus, the fact is, the Saints still remained one of the least penalized teams in the NFL the last few years, AND our defense was down right atrocious.

Ranks right up there with the Tiger woods thing in the giant imbalance between peoples fake outrage, and my confusion that anyone was suprised about it....

Dude, this shit happens. Welcome to earth.

They should be punished, but everyone acting like they just uncovered a pedophile ring being run through a foundation for wayward youth needs to stop being so dramatic.

Well, Gregg Williams just admitted that he did all of this shit, so NFL has no choice but to punish the Saints now.

His knee jerk reaction was based on the rivalry between his team and NO. I'm guessing that people's silly over-emotional attachments to their teams is where a lot of this outrage is coming from.

I don't see what the big deal is. I wouldn't be surprised if most teams have something similar.

The big deal is, the other teams don't get caught. Simple fact of the matter is, there are rules in place against this sort of thing, and even if every team in the league is doing it, anyone who gets caught should and will face consequences for it.

Plus, I don't doubt that every team in the league encourages punishing the other team as physically as possible, but I'm not convinced that it occurs to this extent, with this degree of structure and order and financial organization. Fair or not, Goodell is going to make an example out of them.

I like how Gregg Williams admitted to running it, but it looks like he'll not even get punished now that he's with another team, while the Saints will probably get bombarded with punishments. While I think the Saints should receive a little bit of punishment, I think Williams should be fired. Sal Alosi tripped a player and got fired. Williams encouraged others to cause harm on multiple players. He should be fired like Alosi, whether its by his current team or the NFL. There's no way that he should just be like "Yeah, sorry about that", and be able to walk away and be scott-free with a different team.

There is a huge difference between a couple of players deciding to do it on their own, and having the entire organization participating. Not only did Gregg Williams run the bounties, but both Sean Payton and their GM knew it was going on and did nothing to stop it, despite knowing full well it was very much against NFL rules. It's not even a grey area, the NFL was pretty fucking specific about it being illegal. Nor is it an isolated incident, as the NFL states that it had been going on for 3 years. This is a big fucking deal, and we all remember how "lenient" Roger Goodell is...he is going to come down on the Saints. Hard. He has no choice. For the Saints to be doing this, while the NFL has been actively trying to promote an atmosphere to prevent concussions and the like, to have a team actively seek out players to injure is simply intolerable. Goodell is gonna be righteously pissed off, and looking to make examples out of somebody.

Please, this is hardly the first time a team or player has admitted to putting "bounties" out on opposing players. Players have been doing it for ages, many times not really hiding it.

No way in hell can they force the Rams to fire Gregg Williams. The Rams did nothing wrong, why should they suffer with a drastic coaching change?

What they SHOULD do, however, is fine Gregg Williams 2/3 of his pay this season. As for the Saints, I saw an interesting thought on ProFootballTalk.com that Goodell should (or could) take away their franchise tag. The Saints cannot lose the first round pick this year, since they do not have it. I wouldn't be surprised if they lose their 2013 1st round pick AND their franchise tag (which sucks for them since the tag would go on Drew Brees).

This is just as bad as Spygate back in 2007, and that cost them their first round pick. As such the same fate is just as fair.

Videotaping signals isn't the same as maiming players, sorry.

Plus, Goodell is going to set an example, especially considering how he's been so conscious of player safety. I'd wager that Williams gets a lifetime ban, the Saints lose their second and third round picks this year and their first round pick next year (The Patriots have their first for this year), and the Redskins and Bills (two teams rumored to also have the bounty system in effect while Williams was coaching) get hit with penalties too.

The thing is, Guy, is that Terrell Suggs said in an interview that the Ravens had a bounty on Rashan Mendenhall and Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers, yet no punishment came his or the Ravens way. It's also come out that Gregg Williams had this "bounty" system in play at Washington, Tennessee, and Buffalo, and their teams aren't going to be punished? Why are the Saints being singled out?

Like I said in my first post, the stats speak for themselves. Last year the Saints were in the top ten in least penalties, and they've been around that number the past 3 years. Now, if they were truly trying to take people out, wouldn't they have more personal fouls against them?

If the Saints get a really harsh punishment... then it simply won't be fair. The media is not helping by swaying people's opinion about this while basically ignoring other teams indiscretions and the actual facts.

Plus, all this crap could not have come at a worst time. There's still a small possibility the Saints sign Brees on Monday and that we're able to take the franchise tag off him and put it on Nicks, but if that doesn't happen, we get severely punished, and then we lose both Nicks and Colston to Free Agency? Things won't be looking too bright in the Saints future.

The Bounty Bowl & Bounty Bowl II took place in 1989, teams & players have been organizing bounty pools against other teams for decades, this is hardly new, it's part of the game. People not to stop trying to make a bigger deal out of this than what it really is.

Oh don't get me wrong, just like Spygate, I'm sure pretty much every team does what the Pats got caught for, just like I'm sure the bounty system is in effect for just about every team. It just sucks for you that the Saints were the ones who got caught.

On the plus side, there is talk of Buffalo and Washington being penalized as well.

I would much rather have this than teams spying on eachother. I don't find this offensive in any way, it's the nature of the NFL and dudes would still be trying to injure eachother even if there was no bounty.

You know what else I find pathetic about all this? They were awarded 1,000 dollars if the reports are true.

Now, that's a lot of money to you and me, but to an NFL player it doesn't really give them any extra initiative to go out there and "earn" an extra thousand bucks, while also risking suspension and being fined MUCH more than that.
