Morrison and R-Truth thrown together as a title-contention tag team? I get it now...

D-Man

Gone but never forgotten.
During a time when "thrown together" tag teams have resurged the tag title division, we've seen some interesting pairings. Jericho/Edge, JeriShow, ShowMiz, MVP/Henry are just a few of these teams that have been a focal point on WWE televisio0n programming. At first, I was skeptical about them. But after a while, I began to understand the reasons why they were thrown together.

When it came to John Morrison and R-Truth, I really didn't get it... at all. All of a sudden, these guys started a backstage bro-mance and became instant best friends. They started to formulate stupid, rap phrases with each other, dance around, hug, and do everything except buy each other dinner before taking each other back to their hotel rooms. However, I never understood the meaning behind taking two superstars whose singles careers were on the rise, smushing them into a tag team, and allowing them to gain a win over two estabished, gimmicked tag teams in order to gain a title shot at Wrestlemania.

But then I watched NXT last night and finally figured it all out.

As I watched as the Miz and Daniel Bryan faced R-Truth and David Otunga in a tag team match, I saw the Miz and R-Truth being a focal point of confrontation, due to their upcoming tag match at Wrestlemania and I realized something...

The Miz is the US champion and 1/2 of the Unified Tag Team champions and he didn't have a match at Wrestlemania yet. In addition, he is also a mentor on the WWE's newest television broadcast.

Now, if I were a WWE creative team member, how could I incorporate all of this into a Wrestlemania match? Let's throw him into a tag match against another NXT pro and a popular partner. This way, the tag titles can be defending at the biggest show of the year, the United States champion could be in action, the new NXT program can be advertised (since I'm sure that Daniel Bryan and David Otunga will be in tow during this match), the ever-popular John Morrison can be involved in (somewhat of) a high-profile match, all in one shot! But, I'm sure this match is mostly all about advertising the NXT program for the WWE's largest audience of the year.

Does everyone agree with me on this? Was it obvious to all of you from the beginning or did this thread turn on a light bulb for all of you?

My initial reaction was that they were put together so that The Miz & Morrison could reunite during or after the match. John Morrison's face turn hasn't turned out how WWE wanted, I still maintain that there's some crowd noise added to his Smackdown appearences, and The Miz has come on leaps and bounds over the past years when he hasn't. John Morrison was supposed to be the star and it hasn't worked out that way.

R-Truth seemed like a good partner because of how popular he is, I'd say he's in the top 3 babyfaces when it comes to crowd reaction, so if Morrison turns on him it'd make it appear all the more dastardly.

To be honest, this is something I never really considered but I believe you are right. I don't think the promotion of NXT is the whole reason why this match is taking place because I think something interesting could come from this match. But like you said, it's probably the main reason.

I posted in the "Will NXT be at Wrestlemania" thread that I thought the rookies would definitely get some screen time, but I was thinking more of a backstage segment. It would be great exposure for Bryan and Otunga to accompany their mentors on the grandest stange of them all. Also, if the match continues to be hyped on NXT, it gives that program more importance in the build to Wrestlemania.

Like I said, I think there is something else to this match. Whether that is a Morrison heel turn or maybe a Mercury return, I'm not really sure. Either way, it is a good idea to give NXT a Wrestlemania rub with this tag match.

Actually I must admit D-man your thread was actually the thing that brought light to the whole situation.
At first I was thinking, sure it's a way to get 2 popular wrestlers, one on the rise heel, and The Big Show on the card, because it would be, well quite boldly.. shit.. if they didn't have 3 of their most potential future stars on the biggest show of the year, let alone facing the fact that guys like Evan Bourne, a less pushed person, and two eternal mid-carders (MVP and Shelton Benjamin) on the card.

But now that you mention it, it's a great way to advertise NXT, put it into focus point for the millions of people that will either be watching that night, or the millions of people tuning in on WWE.com the next day to check the results and pictures, especially pictures.
By pictures I mean ofcourse the results and article based results won't be as telling about this little interference by someone like either Otunga or Bryan, rather than a picture would tell the whole story if you've followed NXT just a little bit, or atleast know the roster, it makes people want to tune in.

So yes, a lightbulb was most definatly turned on right there.

I hadn't thought about that idea. I think they just put those two guys together because they are more popular than the actual teams(Hart Dynasty and Cryme Tyme). This does seem reasonable, but I don't think they need to promote NXT at Wrestlemania. It's not like the people watching don't know that NXT exists.

I think you are right, to an extent, but that doesn't mean I like it. I think the WWE believes as long as you have four superstars in a match, we shouldn't care WHY they are a tag team. Well, a lot of us do care. I think it has a lot to do with NXT, WWE is really over the top on product placement now-a-days. And I don't mind them promoting NXT. But I see it as more of a case of lazy booking, than I do of NXT promotion.

WWE creative probably doesn't feel tag team wrestling is important today. They think we don't care about it as much as we do seeing four superstars in a match at Mania. That is not how I feel. I would rather see two REAL tag teams, or 3, or 4, in some kind of a REAL tag match. Morrison doesn't need the tag titles. He has already done that. Neither does Big Show. I think it's cool that Miz has both belts, but does he NEED the tag belts? No.

If you are goign to have tag teams, why not give them the belts? Hart Dynasty, Cryme Tyme, Legacy, Croft/Barretta. How are they ever going to get over a tag team, and later on in singles action, if they are not being used in a big way? It's just stupid.

I suspect what happened was the WWE had a certain number of certain guys they wanted on the show. They didn't really care how they were in the show, just that they were in it and sell t-shirts. It's all about marketing right now, and quality is taking a hit. Right now, TNA has a FAR better tag division. Not better wrestlers, but the division is more defined, with REAL tag teams.I really don't like where tag team wrestling is today in the WWE, and I highly doubt it's going to change anytime soon.

I got that feeling, that both these rookies, will somehow get involved in this match, especially Bryan. Both Otunga and Bryan have had problems with their pro, and either one can cost their mentor the match, which personally could either be an awesome move or it will backfire.

Now D-Man I agree with everything you said, as it is all about cross promotion in the WWE, and in this match they get it all, NXT, Morrison and Miz back together, two of the most popular guys in one match, U.S. Champ in action, and tag titles on the line. That is a lot for one match, and it could be a match on the undercard that could steal the show.

-With John Morrison's new storyline, there can be many possibilities as to what can happen. First of all, Mercury has recently been in contact with WWE and this could mean that if Rtruth and JOMO do win at WM MNM will prob reform in the following weeks. This could happen by Rtruth and JOMO in a match with Hard Dynasty. Joey comes out costs Rtruth and JOMO the championships and boom JOMO turns on Rtruth for mercury resulting in a heel turn.
-Morrison sides with Miz at WM and a triple attack on Rtruth occurs, but then a returning Mercury comes to the save turning JOMO heel and a returning Mercury a face Leaving the draft to be JOMO and Rtruth to RAW causing a triple threat match at Extreme Rules for the US title.
-At WM, Daniel Bryan costs ShoMiz the titles leaving Bryan in the ring to get double teamed by ShoMiz. Then JOMO and Rtruth come storming back to the ring, but its not enough so a returning Mercury comes to make the save. On the following SmackDown and later weeks Morrison must choose between his old partner or Rtruth.

Or R-Truth and JoMo job to MizShow so they don't have to keep in the tag division and can continue doing singles stuff.

Although I like the idea of Mercury coming in and costing Truth and and JoMo the match setting up a good little singles feud between JoMo and Truth. That would be pretty good.

Just My Opinion

I think that JoMo and truth will nearly baet ShowMiz but then Show hits the right hand. Then Miz covers and they win.JoMo goes ntus at truth and nails starship pain and gets on the mic.He yells at him at says that he has a better tag parnter. One that is on his level, then Joey comes out and they hit the snapshot on Truth. This ,ay not happen but with Joey on contract why not use him.He and Jo have history so its only fair that they do something together.

Just my thoughts!

I think that will be something involving Morrison and R-Truth's rookie David Otunga. Both of them are A-Listers and this could be a storyline where Morrison and Otunga screw R-Truth. Then Morrison will turn heel, I suppose that David is already a one, and they will tell us that R-Truth is a loser and bla bla bla not enough to be in the antourage of a A-List boy.

Makes perfect sense to me. Miz and Morrison needed to both get on the card, but they are no longer a tag team, so they put Miz's ShowMiz team up against the random pairing of Truth and Morrison. Like D-Man said, they are accomplishing several things with this matchup and he's absolutely right. The tag team belts are defended, the US Champion is in action, NXT can be promoted somehow, plus Miz and Morrison will both make it onto the Wrestlemania card. All from just one match, with a random pairing making it into the match instead of a "true" tag team.

People argue that "true" tag teams should be feuding for the belts. Well, let me ask you people this. What's going to sell more Wrestlemania PPV buys: ShowMiz VS Truth & Morrison or Cryme Time VS The Hart Dynasty? As much as I like the Hart Dynasty, this is an easy question to answer. Morrison & Truth as a random pairing makes sense as #1 contenders for the Unified Tag Team Championship because WWE can accomplish far more by using this team, along with ShowMiz, in that match rather than "true" tag teams. The Hart Dynasty will get their shot some other time, Wrestlemania needs the feuds that will sell more PPV buys.

It wasn't obvious that this was their intention, but I think it probably is to advertise the NXT programme in the second instance, and the first is to get more people on the card. The WWE has always tried to shoehorn as many wrestlers onto the card as possible, and it doesn't look like this year will be any different. Three of the four people in this match would probably be on everyone's candidates for the MITB match, but they aren't in it, and their absence has left spots for guys like Dolph Ziggler and Evan Bourne, who would otherwise be unlikely to have a Mania spot. In addition, it gives something for perennial WrestleMania problem Big Show to do.

Does it advertise NXT? Yes. Does it get more midcard titles on the show? Yes. But the most important thing is that it stacks the card. These guys could be in MITB, but it really doesn't matter who's in that match, as whoever it is will have exactly the same match. However, all four of these men are popular so you have an extra match that people want to see.

I dont think this match has been made to promote NXT at all.

It might bring some attention to it but as I stated in the thread about the match itself I believe they would have had Showmiz defend at Mania anyway but decided to have R Truth and Morrison as the challengers so they can win the titles, increase their popularity even more over the next few months and then have Morrison turn on Truth and push both as singles wrestlers again.
