Matt Hardy and Christian: The new Mikey Whipwreck's?

The Raven's Epitaph

Getting Noticed By Management
It's no surprise that WWE still aren't doing anything with Matt Hardy and Christian.

I was sat watching The Rise and Fall of ECW a few nights ago, and it showed Mikey Whipwreck, and I thought.. got his ass kicked all the time? got no glory? He reminds me of Matt Hardy and Christian.

Minus Dolph Ziggler, Matt Hardy and Christian are the most underrated and most title-deserving superstars that we've seen in the last decade, easily.

Matt Hardy hasn't held gold, (or in this case; silver) since he held the ECW Championship and neither has Christian. I don't know about anybody else, but seeing as WWE ruined ECW even further, I don't class the ECW Championship as a major accomplishment.

Matt Hardy and Christian are also similar to Tommy Dreamer in his 90's ECW days. He even said himself that he wanted to go through his career without winning a major title. And that's exactly what Matt Hardy and Christian are doing (with the exception of Christian going to TNA)

I really think it's about time we saw some major light shining out of Christian and Matt Hardy.

What do you think?

I think if I see another Christian or Matt Hardy should get titles thread I'm going to go into a homicidal rage, but I'm bored so I'll have some fun here.

For one thing, the idea of Mikey was that he never got in any offense, ever. He kept coming back though and slowly but sure evolved into a fan favorite and a guy that was able to contend with the biggest stars in the company. Christian and Matt Hardy are veterans that debuted almost 15 years ago. They have loyal and devoted fan bases and have had great successes in WWE and TNA.

Matt Hardy's career highlights are a totally forgettable US Title reign and an ECW Title reign that was ok at best. Christian is a former world champion that has never been a major star in WWE. Is he a very good performer? Of course he is, but he's never come close to being in the main event and there's likely a reason for that. These men at this stage in their careers are going to be lucky to get a quick shot in the main event, although I could potentially see Christian being elevated.

As for the point of this thread though, you seem to completely miss the point of Mikey's character. After his initial mega run to win the ECW Triple Crown, Mikey was more or less there to pad out the card and guarantee you a solid match. He put people over and made them (see Justin Credible) look light years better than they actually were.

Finally, other than a single day as tag champion, Whipwreck didn't hold a title or mean anything in a major storyline after 1996. The rest of what he did revolved around putting over various people and being a guy that people would fight when they had nothing else to do or there needed to be a spot filled in on a card. Christian and Matt are guys that are constantly involved in midcard storylines that get significant TV time. Both were involved in NXT Season 1, meaning they were featured on two TV shows a week.

In short, Matt Hardy and Christian are nowhere near the same kind of characters as Mikey Whipwreck was. Neither belong in the main event scene and are fine where they are today, but they're IWC darlings so naturally they belong in the main event scene where they would make next to no sense (ok maybe Christian could). As for the Whipwreck comparison though, having them win titles and being Mikey is something that can't make sense as they're opposite things.

I'm going to go ape shit. I'm annoyed by these now, but I'll give an answer.

Anyways, like I said numerous times before, I think Matt Hardy and Christian are fine putting over younger talent. I think Christian is better, than Matt. For one, he can make the PG era humor work. (Even though he breaks the rules because of his language sometimes.) I think Christian is WAAY more deserving than Matt, but that's not the point.

Why do Christian and Matt need titles, anyway? I think they have awesome mid-card careers.

Paul Heyman says in The Rise and Fall of ECW DVD that they deliberately gave Whipwreck no offensive moves. He was essentially a glorified punching bag with eyes. And people loved him for it.
So in that regard, no, Hardy and Christian are not like Whipwreck, because they have offense - Christian hurts people's feelings with his sweet mic skills, and Hardy does that thing where he stands on the second rope and raises his arms like Stephen Hawking trying to do the YMCA dance.
In terms of putting people over, then yes they are. They are respected veterans who time and again will be used to give younger up and comers a credible win. For further information, see Henry, Mark; Holly, Bob and Dust, Gold.

They're not the new Mikey Whipwrecks. For one they actually win matches and mean something, and another thing... they've held many many many many championships. The two of them might actually be remembered 50 years after they retire, trust me when I tell you this... Whipwreck will be forgotten, as he almost already has been.

They aren't the new Mikey WhipWreck's because they actually are something in the WWE. The fans adore these two. In july at a house show I wen't to when Christian and Matt hardy faced each other the crowd was going crazy. They deserve much more then what they are getting and I hope they get a push in the near future. And like crock has mentioned they have held a countless number of titles in their career.

I think i know the fact why people like them. They know what to expect when they hear they'r theme music. people know that they will see an bit above average match (and this is coming from a total Matt Hardy mark (bash me for it if you want to)) And allso the fact that they really interact with the fans expesially matt with his Youtube, facebook, twitter accounts.
