Lethal Lottery IV: Runn Reynolds Runn vs. Sons of Destiny (World Tag Team Titles)

The scene fades into a small darkly lit street. There is a large Range Rover parked in the centre of the street with barely any light on it. Inside the car, Scott Hammond and Mick Overlast can be seen sitting in the front. They seem to be waiting for something.

Do you reckon he'll show?

He'd better.

I don't think he will. This is all too dark for him.

If he doesn't, he knows that he will have the Sons Of Destiny to deal with.

This is true. I wouldn't want to be him right now. Pass me over that beer.

We're not drinking and driving.

No, you're not. I'm not driving, thus am entitled to a brew.

Hammond pops the top and takes a long swig, with Overlast looking a little jealous.

Don't be mad, Mick. Designated drivers are very important in today's society.

Blow me.

Ah, I'm just playing with you. I'm just in a good mood after last week.

Just then, one of the back doors open and Leon Kensworth gets in, looking very nervous.

Ah, I thought you weren't going to come!

Yeah, well, you really know how to find the nicest places to meet.

There is a reason for that. We were just talking about our triumphant win last week.

Well I won't lie...it was pretty impressive. It's hard to believe that you two have only been teaming for a couple of weeks.

Just then, Blade emerges from the back seat of the car, momentarily startling Kensworth.

Did you ever doubt us, Leon?

For a while, yes.

Well then, you're the demographic that we are looking to change the opinion of.

Leon, did you see what happened on Ascension? I got the biggest win of my career for OUR team. I turned around what could have been a bad situation. I saw Everest's Rock Slide coming, and I dropped him on his back, locked his arms and wrists, and watched as I wrenched his body in the Anaconda Vice and took great pride in watching the once great Everest tap out.

I still think he's great.

Of course you do, Leon. To you, Everest is the poster boy of what this company represents. But let's face it, he used to represent this damn company. We are the new faces of this company. Do you understand how big of a deal this is, Leon? Because I think you underestimate the gravity of our win on Ascension. I made a man who was here during WZCW's inception, a former World Heavyweight Champion, tap out. I wasn't passed the torch, I damn near stole it!

And this is only the start of things to come.

Well, I dare say that you have both got your hands full at the Lethal Lottery.

You think so, Leon? What do you think, Mick?

Overlast begins maniacally laughing at the notion of what Leon has just said

Let's see. Scott, how do we feel about facing the tag team champions? Seeing that Ricky Runn managed to get beaten by a man called S.H.I.T., I don't think we have too much to worry about, do you?

Isn't it funny that everyone was anticipating what was happening between the Apostles and Reynolds, Runn and Smith when they should have been keeping a lookout for the Sons Of Destiny? We know when to pick and choose our spots, and on a personal level, Leon, I am focusing my energies on that mug Austin Reynolds.

I don't understand.

You don't understand, and that is precisely why you will always be a footnote in the annals of this company. Allow me to give you a little history lesson, Leon. Austin comes from the same area of London as me. We started here at the same time, but guess what? He was the reason that I was taken out of the Elite Championship picture. He stole wins from me at a pivotal time in my career and because he stole them from me, he got all the opportunities that I didn't. I will make sure that at the Lethal Lottery, I take revenge on the times he held me down. Mick and I are the total package, and we have our gameplan all set out.

Blade's face again can be seen from the darkness in the back of the car

Gentlemen, it is almost time. We have a flight to catch.

Almost time for what? And what flight?

You didn't think we brought you out into the middle of nowhere just to chat, did you?

Well, actually I did. I thought it was just to set the mood.

Leon, Leon, Leon. We are now the most organised group in WZCW. Everything we do has purpose. Shall we, Mick?

It would be my pleasure, partner.

With that, the car's engine starts up, and the car screeches away from the scene into the darkness.

A black SUV turns down a side street and travels slowly down the road. All of the windows in the vehicle are down as its riders look around at their surroundings and up into an overcast sky.

Leon Kensworth: First Vegas, now Miami? You guys sure know how to do it big, although the weather could be a little bit nicer. What's in this bag, anyway?

Kensworth holds up the bag that has been sitting in his lap since he and the Sons of Destiny left Miami International Airport. Blade takes his eyes off of the road and looks up into the rearview mirror, meeting Kensworth's questioning eyes with a blank stare.

Blade: Vegas was a pleasure trip, Leon. Today is all business. Mick and Scott here will give you your instructions.

As Blade returns his focus to driving, Scott Hammond turns around in the passenger seat to look back at Kensworth, who is sitting directly behind Blade.

Hammond: I'm sure it's been a while since you've been behind a camera, Leon, but we need you to do a little filming for us.

Kensworth: But why me? We have camera crews and –

Hammond: Well, it'd be a little strange to bring an entire camera crew to a cemetery.

Kensworth's expression turns to one of confusion and fear.

Kensworth: What? A cemetery? Surely you guys are joking with me, right?

Kensworth nervously laughs and turns to face Mick Overlast, who's sitting beside him in the backseat. Overlast doesn't return the laughter.

Overlast: Blade just said this trip was all business, and Hammond said earlier that everything we do has a purpose, so I'm not sure why you think this is a laughing matter, Leon. We have to visit a...friend, if you will.

Kensworth: What friend?

Blade turns into the cemetery and finds a spot to park the SUV. After doing so, he turns the car off and motions for everyone else to get out of the vehicle. The four men start to walk through the cemetery, the Sons of Destiny peering at the numerous headstones while Kensworth trails a couple steps behind, the camera bag draped over his shoulder.

Kensworth: Look, guys, can we talk this over? This is just creepy.

Overlast: Oh, shut up, Leon. It's not dark out; no corpses are going to jump out of the ground and grab you. Then again, you may fit in just nicely around here since you're as pale as a ghost.

Kensworth: I just want to know why you're doing this.

Overlast: It's simple really. At this past Ascension, we dealt with an over-the-hill veteran and a kid who couldn't handle the bigtime. We promptly disposed of them without batting an eyelash, and now our focus is on the Lethal Lottery and Runn Reynolds Runn. With that in mind, I want us to deliver the first blow; not physically, but mentally.

Hammond spots what the Sons are looking for and beckons them over.

Hammond: Here we are, guys.

Blade, Overlast and Kensworth stand around Hammond and look down at the marble headstone in front of them.

Kensworth: Who's Rachael Lopez?

Hammond: A friend.

Kensworth: Whose friend?

Hammond: Ricky Runn's.

Kensworth shakes his head.

Kensworth: You guys are sick in the head.

Overlast puts his hand on Kensworth's shoulder.

Overlast: Relax, Leon. We're not going to do anything to Rachael here. We just want to talk to her. And we want you to tape our little conversation and personally deliver it to Ricky Runn.

Kensworth: Why?

Hammond: A team is only as strong as its weakest link. We want Ricky to be mentally off his game at Lethal Lottery. Once he sees this, he'll be so distraught and so angry that he'll try to do too much and cost his team the titles.

Overlast takes the bag from Kensworth and pulls the camera out, then hands it to Kensworth.

Overlast: Start filming.

Kensworth looks at each of the Sons of Destiny for a brief moment, then sighs deeply and lifts the camera up and begins to film. Overlast clears his throat and stands in front of the headstone, looking down at it.

Overlast: Hi there, Rachael. It's a pleasure to meet you.

Overlast looks down at the quote on the headstone that reads, “Life is a garden...just dig it, dude!” and softly chuckles.

Overlast: Oh, Rachael...so naïve. Although I guess it's a good thing that you're not around to see how miserable life can really be once you get older. You had no responsibilities, not a care in the world. I'm sure you lived a great life.

Overlast's eyes move up slowly to look at the years noted on the stone.

Overlast: 18 years old when you passed...what a shame. So much potential, endless possibilities...all unfulfilled. You know, it's funny that your friend Ricky is partners with a guy like Austin Reynolds because Reynolds is just like you.

Austin Reynolds was one of the best Elite Champions in the history of WZCW, and was in line to become the World Champion, but he threw it all away over some woman. Now he's stuck carrying Ricky Runn, picking up his slack. Luckily for Reynolds, Scott Hammond and I will take the tag titles from him and Ricky at the Lethal Lottery, and he'll be freed from the only ties that are binding him to that pathetic excuse of a wrestler you called your friend. He will get to live his life and become the Ratings Winner again, and while he may not thank us that night, deep down inside, he will appreciate what we do.

A clap of thunder is heard and the Sons of Destiny briefly look up into the sky before Overlast's eyes return to the headstone.

Kensworth: We should go –

Overlast: Shut up and keep filming. I'm not done.

Overlast puts his hands in his pockets and studies the headstone some more.

Overlast: I don't know what brought you to your fate, Rachael, and I feel terrible. I really do. However, you won't be alone for much longer. You see, the tag title has given Ricky life; a purpose, if you will. He's been bouncing around all giddily, doing functions for the kids and helping out with charities. I'm sure you'd be proud of him if you were here to see it.

But what happens after the Lethal Lottery, when he has his reason for living taken away from him? He won't have that title belt to smile upon, and he won't have you to run to. The kids will turn their backs on him and Reynolds will finally give up on him. He will then become a shell of himself. He'll be miserable and lifeless; the losses like the one he just suffered to S.H.I.T. will begin to pile up, and before you know it, he'll be unable to live with himself.

Another clap of thunder strikes and a slight drizzle starts to fall. Overlast's gaze doesn't leave the stone even through the raindrops are falling down his face and into his eyes.

Overlast: It really is sad, isn't it, Rachael? Unfortunately, you are powerless to stop all of that from happening. Austin Reynolds is powerless to stop all of that from happening. It is Runn Reynolds Runn's destiny to lose the tag titles to Hammond and me at Lethal Lottery. It is their destiny to self-destruct.

Overlast stops and turns to face Blade, then Hammond, then back to the headstone.

Overlast: Once they break apart, their tag title reign, and ultimately Ricky Runn, will be forgotten, just like you, Rachael, will be forgotten once your immediate relatives and close friends depart from this world. Be glad you won't be around to see it happen.

Overlast walks around to the headstone and places his hand on top of it.

Overlast: It's been extremely nice talking to you, Rachael.

With that, Overlast steps away from the headstone and Hammond and Blade follow behind. Kensworth turns the camera off and looks down at it. He looks to the headstone and shakes his head before following the Sons of Destiny through the rain back toward the SUV.

We see a clear blue sky that stretches far into the horizon. In the foreground, a deep but narrow valley weaves off to the right and a sandy brown mountain range winds away to the left. Closer still, is a bridge that connects these two points. In the centre of this deserted crossing are two men. They straddle the outside of the supports and both tentatively lean over the edge while holding on tight.

Austin: “Destiny is a bitch isn’t it?”

Austin and Ricky turn to face the road of the bridge. They are both wearing big and bright smiles as a breeze moves through their hair.

Ricky: “And isn’t funny how it tries to come back and bite you in the ass?”

Ricky chuckles loudly and Austin smiles at him.

Austin: “Yeah it’s freaking hilarious but some people just can’t let it go. Blade and Scott Hammond are a couple just like that. Too long have I been on the end of Blade’s vengeful quest for destiny! That chair shot on my debut was just the start of it and he has danced around, avoiding me for too long. And now he has gotten his bitch involved. And yet I see no challenge in facing two guys who are desperate to emulate Blade.”

Ricky pulls up a set of braces for the bungee cord that is attached. He passes one to Austin and they begin to put them on. Austin continues with an unmatched enthusiasm.

Austin: “Scott Hammond is like a puppy; he will follow Blade because he is a puppy who loves chasing his tail because he thinks catching it is the be-all and end-all of his world. He did it in the Mayhem division, he did it in the Brothers in Arms and he did it when he thought he could beat me for the Elite X title. Hammond chases something, catches it and gets bored with it all too quickly. Blade will continue to have Hammond dancing around like a rat to the Pied Pipers tune because after spending the summer destroying Hammond and since recruiting him, they have both been weaker.”

Ricky tightens his brace and gestures to Austin to pull his tighter.

Ricky: “We thought It was a good idea to go and get Mick Overlast. We have to wonder how much whisky and cigarettes it took for him to sink to Blade’s level. He has been in the company for all of a flash in the pan and he has already abandoned his values."

Austin: "But even if Overlast was as half as good as he thinks he is, he still couldn’t match Ricky on his day. We want to see Blade ruing his decision; I want Blade to regret picking him from deepest obscurity.”

Austin smiles widely again as he looks at Austin but he can’t hide his nervous, shaky feeling.

Austin: “This is fun. I’m enjoying myself. I’m glad you talked me into it.”

Ricky: “This is hilarious!”

Austin pauses for a second as if to consider the madness of the situation. He peers over the edge and then backs at the rope that is attached to his harness. He gives Ricky a little nervous smile before continuing.

Austin: “The combination of these so-called Sons of Destiny have made us laugh, genuinely out loud, I wish Blade was a comedian because he has made my day with some of his comments. Not only does their ring work make me laugh but Blade comes out and tells Hammond that he is the most gifted wrestler in the company. Hell, even Joe freaking West is questioning that call. Hammond and Overlast are going to need all the luck in the world to keep up with Ricky and I. At the Lethal Lottery, it’s go time for Runn Reynolds Runn.”

Austin: “For Blade to tell his girls that they are a polished unit is a downright insult to me, to Ricky and to the whole ethic of being a tag team. Blade has taken too many shots to the head and it has affected his judgement.”

Austin moves a leg from one side to the other and Ricky does the same. They are both now on the outside. Austin grips the support rail tightly while Ricky is more relaxed.

Austin: “My partner is the perceived weakness in this team. I wouldn’t know it. He is a rookie who has taken the company by storm, whether you realise it or not. He is better than you all know because you are preoccupied by how good the entire company is. You all take for granted who strong and deep the roster is that you don’t realise how good this young man is.”

Ricky: “It is my destiny to rise up and it is a matter of time before I make you all sit up and realise exactly how good I am.”

Ricky shakes the harnesses loose and two bungees fall free. Austin and him then move a few steps apart.

Austin: “Until then, I will do exactly what I have done my whole career. I’m going to walk out to the Staples Center with this young man by my side and we are going to rock the show. We are going to retain these titles and then....then I am going to win the Lethal Lottery because Kingdom Come IV is our destiny.”

Austin and Ricky share a nod.

Austin: “We are willing to go to war to get there as WZCW Tag Team Champions.”

They both push away from the ledge and backflip off the ledge. Austin yells and Ricky woos as they freefall off the bridge into the valley below.

Ricky and Rachael back on graduation night. The two were sitting side by side at the beach still wearing their graduation caps. The two were leaning back on their arms as they looked at the night sky. The two share a bright smile as Rachael slides her hand over Ricky’s in the sand. The two smiled in the subtle quietness before Rachael said softly.

“So this is it huh? After all these years and now you’re heading out to become a star.”

Ricky nodded as he continued looking out to the moon.

“Yeah it really has been a ride, hasn’t it? But like the old man said, this is just the beginning for us.”

Rachael plasters on a fake smile, holding back a frown and says softly.

“But what about our future, Ricky?”

Ricky rubs his face with his free hand and looks down. He then leans over onto his side to Rachael and says.

“Rachael, you know you can’t come with me right? I don’t have a clue on how to get in WZCW, let alone how I’m going to afford it all. It will be best if you stayed here. After all, you got that scholarship to the University of Miami. You can’t give that up.”

Rachael sighs sadly and pouts up and says softly.

“I don’t care for the scholarship Ricky, and you know that!”

Ricky couldn’t help but laugh at her rebellious attitude and then says.

“We all got to grow up someday right?”

Rachael shakes her head and scoots closer to Ricky and rests her hand on his shoulder and says in a sad tone.

“Not you Ricky, you don’t need to grow up, you’re perfect the way you are. So kind and so bold if you change who you are because somebody told you otherwise you are a bigger fool than they are. Promise me that Rick, promise me you won’t change.”

The two share a gaze into each other’s eyes, Ricky couldn’t help but blush and look down and then say in almost a mumble.

“What if the future says otherwise, what if I need to change in order to get everything I want?”

Rachael moves her hand to Ricky’s cheek and lifts his face as she says softly.

“What did I say about destiny Ricky? It doesn’t exist; the future is whatever you make it. If someone tells you to change for the bigger picture, change the picture.”

Ricky’s slides onto Rachael’s hip as the two gazed at each other again. As soon as Rachael’s eyes closed they both slide in for a kiss. After the gentle kiss, Rachael pulled a few inches away and said in a soft whisper.

“Promise me one more thing Ricky.”

Ricky opens his eyes to look at Rachael as he nodded his head.

“Yes, what is it?”

“Once you become a big star, please come back and visit me. Come back home.”

Ricky nodded his head and whispered back.”

“Of course, I will come back as soon as I can Rachael, I promise you that, I owe you that much.”

The two again share another kiss as the scene pans back to see the moon light reflecting of the gentle waves of the beach.

The night then transitions to the modern day. The scene a bit more chaotic than the gentle night waves of Miami but sitting at the end of a bridge in mid-day. The bungee equipment lays next to Ricky while he stared out at the horizon, almost lifelessly. if it were not for his aviators, people would have been able to notice his sad blue eyes glistening when he day-dreamed about that unforgettable night in Miami. Austin stood behind him at the truck. He could tell Ricky was reminiscing so he naturally kept his distance and let him re-live his thoughts. Austin smiled out as he also stared at the beautiful horizon. Austin smiles and after a few minutes walks up to Ricky and stands over him. He breaks the silence and says to his fellow tag team champion.

“Hell of a sight, isn’t it, mate?”

Ricky is shocked back into reality when Austin speaks. He nods and continues to stare out the horizon.

“Yeah, it’s a beautiful sight, not a damn thing could replace something as amazing as this.”

Austin laughs and rests against the guard rail and says smiling.

“Well, maybe beating the Sons of Destiny at Lethal Lottery wouldn’t be so bad either?”

Ricky couldn’t help but laugh and says.

“Austin, I love you bro. Despite everything you’ve been through in your career, you’re still this awesome dude. And this team, this is the best thing to happen to me since….Well since being signed to this company in the first place. You taught me everything I know, and you didn’t do it as some drill instructor like Blade does to his grunts, Scott Hammond and Mick Overlast. But you taught me like a mentor, you’re the Miyagi to my Karate Kid.”

Austin playfully scoffs and gently kicks Ricky and says jokingly.

“I’m not that old, you dick.”

“That is not what I’m getting at, what I’m saying is that we can easily beat Cobra Kai.”

Austin crooks his eyebrow and says in a confused manner.

“You mean the Sons of Destiny, right?”

Ricky nods his head and says happily.

“Oh, and them too, hell, we won’t need 3 movie sequels to take them out for good either. This match at Lethal Lottery, Scott Hammond and Mick Overlast will soon realize how huge of a mistake it is to try and sweep our legs.”

“The Karate Kid Metaphors aren’t working Ricky.”

The two share a laugh as Ricky says in a boastful tone.

“Yeah yeah, but you can’t help but notice the comparisons between us and the Karate Kid movies though?”

“There might be, but we need to focus on our match. “

Ricky nods in agreement before standing up next to Austin and boasting.

“We’ve beat Hammond before, and his mentor Blade before. I don’t have a doubt in my mind we can’t beat Hammond again, even if his partner is Mick Overlast. Hammond is a chump; the only reason why he is successful is because he has relied on others for guidance. He relied on Wasabi in the Brothers in Arms. If Wasabi wasn’t as kind as he used to be, he wouldn’t have needed Ty Burna to show how great he could be.”

Austin listens to Ricky and then replies.

“But we can’t possibly forget about Mick Overlast. As much as we would like to write him off, there is a reason why Blade worked so hard to recruit him. He obviously has talent, misguided granted. But it is there.”

Ricky nods but Austin turns to Ricky and says in a more serious tone.

“If Blade and Hammond can teach anything to this kid, is that he will teach him how to play mind games and try to exploit us mentally, Ricky…No matter what he says or does, you can’t let him provoke you. Blade does his research and there is without a doubt that Mick will do anything in his power to throw you off. That is his only strength in the team. When the Sons are in the ring, Mick is the brain, and Hammond is the brawn. When Overlast is in the ring, work him over physically. And when Hammonds in the ring, we piss him off. Fly around him; attack his knees, low kicks. With our ability, we can do everything and anything in the ring. Hammond is only limited to what he can do when he has a hold of us. Only way he can grab us, is if we let Mick Overlast slow us down…Well, we can’t let that happen.”

Ricky nods and then chimes in.

“Mick Overlast is young and as much as he would hate to admit, impressionable. At first he was bold and proud. He wouldn’t take orders from anyone even Vance Bateman or Chuck Myles. But When Blade and Scott Hammond showed up and told him about destiny and the easy way to success in WZCW. He was more than happy to take the bait. And now look at him, he is a crony, a grunt to whatever Blade and Scott Hammond feed him. He went from being young and rebellious, to being the foot solider for a group of men that are trying to indoctrinate everyone they can to some sort of false prophecy. And unfortunately for Mick, he fell for it, hook line and sinker.”

Austin then speaks after him.

“We didn’t need a prophecy, or a destiny to win the titles. We did it by beating Mind Over Matter with all the odds in their favor. We outlasted them and you Ricky, you made Stark tap out. It wasn’t because it was destiny, and it wasn’t because I ordered you. We won the titles because we were the better team. The Sons are talented, but their aspirations are their downfall. And when they find out that Blade is just using them for his own means at Lethal Lottery, it will not bode well for him.”

“That’s the thing about guys like Blade. They always relay on a scheme or a plan in order to succeed, and those schemes usually involved light-headed men like Mick Overlast and Scott Hammond to do the heavy lifting for him.”

Ricky then climbs onto the guard rail over the bridge and looks over to Austin and says confidently.

“We need to make a statement, Austin. Not only to the Sons of Destiny, and the Apostles of Chaos, and anyone who thinks you need a prophecy and blind loyalty in order to thrive in this business. We need to show to the younger guys in the business like Mikey Stormrage, and James Howard that following the lies Ty Burna and Blade spew can be a serious risk to your health.”

Ricky looks down and takes a deep breath and speaks.

“And I might not be the strongest, or have had the greatest career when you’re not in my corner. But I’m taking in it all in stride, every day I’m growing and changing this business. At first I didn’t have any support; I had to prove my worth before Chuck Myles even thought about signing me. I can remember sleeping in a dirty locker room because I couldn’t afford to stay anywhere else but the same gym I trained in. I’ve been cheated and injured by snakes like Showtime. We’ve been head to head with some of the best WZCW has to offer in Steven Holmes and Constantine. I’ve been attacked by snakes like Showtime. Who cheated me out of a tag team match against the Forgotten Powers, and on top of that, he continued to attack me. He even injured me. And we overcame the odds and bet Mind Over Matter with everything stacked against us, the ref, the rules, everything. The Sons of Destiny, The Apostles of Chaos, it doesn’t matter, it won’t matter. Because you and I, Reynolds. We will show the world that we are here to stay as tag champs, even if it kills us.”

Ricky grins and looks down at the bottom of the bridge. He looks back at his ankle which is still connected to the bungee cord. He smiles over to Austin and turns his back to the bridge to face Austin and says with a huge grin on his face.

“Hey Austin, you thinking we do one more jump before we go?’

Austin laughs and shakes his head and says nonchalantly.

“Hell no, I still can’t believe you convinced me to do it the first time.”

“Suit yourself bro. See you on the other side!”

Before Austin could stop him, Ricky takes a huge leap off the top of the safety rail and the bridge. Ricky screaming wildly as the cord dangles him from the bridge. Austin couldn’t help but laugh at his tag partner as he looks down at him from the top of the bridge. Shortly later, Austin pulls Ricky back up and set out in the truck. A legend and a rising star look to bring their best against a similar team in the Sons of Destiny.
