Since 1993, Power Rangers has become synonymous with action cartoons despite not being one. When it first appeared it took TV by storm. With over 14 seasons of different stories, characters and Zords, it long stands in the heart of many. Young and old. So with that in mind, I decided to make a thread here. Yup. Just one. Not a thread series for the 14+ incarnations. Just one. Dedicated to discussing and reviewing it's history. As a long time fan, I hope I don't disappoint.
Where the franchise started. The original season of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. As opposed to taking the Japanese franchise, Super Sentai, and dubbing it's show, Saban instead decided on taking the footage, costumes and props and placing american actors on these roles. Combining original Japan made footage (mostly Zord fights and some pieces of monster fights) with new footage. A formula that has worked the entire existence of the franchise.
Plot:
When I watched this as a kid, I was glued from start to finish to the TV. However, now that I'm older, I just skip to when Tommy joins the cast. It seems to formulaic until then. Not to mention the amount of charisma he brought to the cast. He seemed like an anti-hero to many and the show cemented itself with him as well as Jason.
Thing about this season is, since it was the first, there was some issues. Like I said, no legit ending to the plot. There was one (Doomsday 1-2) but it was left off when the season went on for another 10 episodes. Another one was reached when Tommy returned to save all of Angel Grove and the Ranger's parents. But the season went on for yet another 10 episodes.
Not to mention, the antics of Bulk and Skull brought a lot of charm to the program and helped the cast develop. The dynamic of Jason and Tommy is also a very appealing one to me. You can compare them to guys like Ryu and Ken, Mario and Luigi and even the Hardy Boyz, Matt and Jeff. They work well alone. But work far better together.
The season is very simplistic outside it's legendary "Green With Evil" arc. But it's "it's the first" charm makes anybody ignore that. It includes a soundtrack with rock tracks being house made. Something I was really fond of:

Cast:
Rangers:
Jason: The leader of the group. A jock with a heart of gold who always looks out for his friends. He has a developing rivalry with Tommy.
Zack: Initially, Jason's best friend and the team's second in command. He is the team's "cool guy". A smooth dancer, he also teaches his own self-made martial art. Hip Hop-Kido.
Billy: The smart guy. Pretty much an uncoordinated and somewhat awkward nerd. He receives the most development of all characters spanning the shows 3 seasons. He takes Karate Lessons from Jason.
Trini: Somewhat tomboyish, she is also the smartest next to Billy occasionally helping him with his inventions and repairing the Zords. She is considered an ambassador of sorts and is second to Jason (later Tommy) in martial arts expertise and is Kim's best friend.
Kimberly: A Valley girl who's never afraid to speak her mind. She's an aspiring gymnast. She also develops a crush on Tommy.
Tommy: Originally introduced as a villain. He overcomes that to become the Power Ranger's first ever Sixth Ranger. A reoccurring theme. He seeks redemption for his time being evil and finds Zordon as a father figure more than the other Rangers do. His powers are stripped by Rita but he eventually recovers them but not for permanent means.
Other Characters:
Zordon: The intergalactic mentor of the Rangers. He was trapped in an alternate dimension may centuries ago and can only communicate through his warp tube. He comes to Earth housing the Power Coins waiting for the day Rita would reawaken to stop her. He is considered the greatest force of good throughout the universe.
Alpha 5: Zordon's robot assistant. Always there for the Rangers and coins his signature phrase "Ay ay ay ay ay!"
Bulk and Skull: The comedic duo starts their journey here. Self profesed bullies, they "antagonize" the Ranger group unaware of their identities with all their antics ending in disaster.
Antagonists:
Rita Repulsa: An ancient evil Zordon sealed away 10 thousand years ago. She looks to conquer Earth but is stopped by the Rangers at every turn. Always getting headaches in the end.
Goldar: Rita's right hand man. A powerful evil warrior who the Ranger's always have a hard time fighting. He looks like a monkey with gold armor.
Finster: The supplier of Rita's monsters. Worries more about making monsters and making his master happy than actually being evil.
Squatt and Baboo: A somewhat evil equal to Bulk and Skull. They are inept and are no real threat.
Scorpina: A recurring villainess who is quite sexy, but when she's made to grow turns into a horrid monster.

Plot:
When 2 random astronauts land in a meteor passing Earth, they discover an unusual dumpster. Awaking the powerful alien witch, Rita Repulsa. With that, on the city of Angel Grove, California the intergalatic being known as Zordon Of Eltar calls his robot assistant Alpha 5 and instructs him to call on "5 teenagers with attitude". Cue theme song and it all started there. Once the 5 teens came in terms with the task Zordon asked for them to do they are granted the 5 Power Coins and dawn the suits of the Power Rangers. Given enhanced fighting abilities and of course, the Zords. From that point on, the Rangers would put a stop to any of Rita's plots.
After many headaches, Rita would get fed up. And called on the power of the "sixth" Power Coin. After taking control of a prodigious teen martial artist, she turns here into the evil Green Ranger and grants him the powerful Dragonzord and Sword Of Darkness. After nearly losing Zordon, the Rangers are eventually able to break the fallen hero's spell. Now 6, they continued to fight Rita. However with the Green Ranger's powers coming from evil, Rita manages to strip Tommy of his powers. But that never stops the core 5. Proving too much for Rita.
This season has no definitive end to it's story.

Super Sentai -> Power Rangers:
This little segment will be kinda reoccurring as there were very notable differences between the stock footage taken from Super Sentai and the filming directly for Power Rangers. First things first, all Zord fights are from Super Sentai. Sentai loosely means "task force' so you know. The season where the costumes and footage for this season come from is called "Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger". It's plot revolves around the 5 (later 6) "Rangers" who come from ancient times. Unfrozen when the witch Badora (Rita) reawakens, they use their robot like deities (the Zords) to fight her. The Red Ranger's unstable older brother later reawakens and after much conflict joins them but faces his death. The season spans 50 episodes. Additional footage was filmed outside this season for exclusive use in the second MMPR season but Saban settled to use the following Dairanger season's Zord footage instead.
The best way to tell the difference between Japan and US filming is to look at the Green Ranger's costume. The US version of the Dragon Armor (the gold part of the costume) seems to be made of polyester and very simple. However the Japan version uses hard rubber and is visually very sturdy.
Japan
U.S.
Another thing is Rita. She was all Japan in this season. Which is why you'll never see her directly confronting the Rangers. As well as recurring bad girl, Scorpina.
Another thing. Notice Trini, the Yellow Ranger. She has no skirt. But Pink Ranger, Kim does. Why? Because in Japan, the Yellow Ranger is a male. And no skirt is added to the costume when used overseas.
