Kofi Kingston: The Theme Song Debacle

Well i've heard a lot of talk over the past few months. Since Kofi Kingston dropped the whole being Jamaican thing people have stated that he needs new music.

Well my question is if he were to get new theme music, what genre or type of song should he get to fit his character and pump up the crowd when he makes his entrance?

Really I thought about it and I couldn't think of anything. So for the people that have stated he should get a theme change I would like to hear your creative ideas on what would be a good new Kofi theme song.

Also are there any people who actually still enjoy his current theme song. I for one somewhat due, it's catchy, pumps up the crowd, and you can try to sing a long with it if you can lol. So if you think his theme should stay the same just post your thoughts why.

So i'm somewhat neutral I think it would be great to see Kofi get a new theme, but at the same time I think his current theme is doing a great job with what it needs too be doing: pumping up the crowd.

Happy Posting on the Kofi Kingston Theme Change or Not Thread! :)

Sigh. For a black guy in wrestling, you usually have two options for a gimmick. A thugging, pants sagging, big booty lovin', gangsta or a generic piece of shit like Shelton Benjamin and Bobby 'my wife has better mic skills than me' Lashley. However, we have gotten some exceptions like The Rock, King Booker, Kofi Kingston, and erm...JayLethal. Yeah we don't like to claim him. Anyways, as a black professional wrestling viewer, I like it when a wrestler is diverse. So if Kofi gets a new theme, then the creative team is going to get a boner bone for change, and stupidly think that he needs a gimmick change and that's just going to open up a whole different can of shitty poo poo. Just because Kofi dropped the accent doesn't mean he needs to drop the theme. I think his theme represents him well. A happy-go-lucky guy who can get hella serious when he needs to.

I just said hella on an internet wrestling forum. Oh my.

They could do a slower version of his current theme and lose the accent on the vocals and maybe tone down his entrance theatrics. The music would still have a catchy feel to it but wouldnt have the Jamaican ties. If he speaks normally now he should have a different entrance theme. It makes no sense to go half and half. He has high energy in the ring but now he is more or less a mellow guy out of the ring.

They started the gimmick change and Kofi became more interesting. Why cant they finish it?

Well if the sole purpose of dropping theme is because he's not jamaican then he should keep the theme because the person who performs it is not a jamaican either! Its actually white guy(Collie Buds) from the Virgin Islands. So on the premise alone I say he keeps the theme and furthermore its the most unique theme in wrestling...

I'm personally not a huge fan of Kingston and the "Smiley dude who can throw down" gimmick that he plays. Just personal taste. But his theme song is one of the best and most original themes in all of wrestling today.

It's catchy, and it gets stuck in your head. If that's not a better reason to keep his theme song, then I don't know what is.

Since this goes along the grounds that "If your gimmick doesn't match your theme music, then your theme music must change", then John Cena should've changed from Rap Music a long time ago. He's quit the rapping gimmick for many years now, yet he continues on with his rap theme; but it explains his character PERFECTLY just like Kofi's does. I don't see any reason to drop it based on those grounds.

So..."regular" black people don't like Jamaican music? (reggae) Just because he isn't Jamaican doesn't mean he can't have jamaican music....

Well see they gave him the last name Kingston and then they gave him the song to kind of make people think of Sean Kingston and label him in that realm. If they were going to do new music I think they would have to drop Kingston kinda like they dropped Chris from Daniels. Or they would have to pull a heel turn, and then a reappearance of a face turn and change the music again, because unless they used the whole boom boom boom thing in the song I think it'll falter kinda like how everyone liked Priceless, but dropped it because they turned them into legacy and now they're legacy but not legacy...

Anyways just my opinion

Kofi should keep his current theme song cause it fits him. Currently he's the happy go lucky African who helps out any faces as his promos b4 he wrestled his 1st match on ECW which I kinda dig. Everything needs to stay the same. FYI The Rock is Samoan not a black man. I hope Kofi Kingston or Shelton Benjamin becomes the 1st WWE African American Champ. I knew he woulda eventually drop the accent.

his current theme is AWESOME is super catchy and fun to sing along to. To many theme songs today are just shitty generic alternative songs and I strongly FEAR what creative would do for a new theme. Personally, i think the theme sounds great (it's on my ipod lol) and changing it is to risky considering the countless bland and boring themes creative gives out (Drew Myctinre WTF).

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The Rock is African American his father is Rocky Johnson...ever heard of him lol. The Rock is half African American (dad's side), half Samoan (mom's side). The Rock is the first African American WWE World Heavyweight Champion in WWE.

Heh....good thread..

I agree about the Theme Song change. I have a perfect one for him if he ever went heel ("Kingston town" by AlBorose, not the lame one from UB40)

I figure something from Lil Wayne would fit the bill. Perhaps a new song just for him

I see no reason to change Kofi's theme. His theme is pretty upbeat and gets you pumped up. The crowd loves it and it goes with his energetic style. I think if they were to change Kofi's theme it would take away from his character. Everyone associates Kofi with that upbeat style and the theme just fits the bill. Anything different in my opinion would only hurt Kofi.

I think Kingston should updrade his theme music to match his personality change. lots of people have. HHH used the King of Kings Music because he at that time was the king of WWE (sorry jerry) and that was good for an alternate music if he wrestles twice in one card. Orton became almost this sort of wrestling psycho so voices added to that by using "voices".

The problem for Kofi was that was a great choice for his Jamaican character but as his persona changes shouldn't he change his music to show he's changed. at the moment i'm not sure what type of persona he is anymore so I don't know what will work, sorry I coudn't tell you what he should make of a new theme but it certainly needs a change.

its been his theme since the beginning, and now with the pyro and the way it obv get him and the crowd pumped... wouldnt change it at all... sometimes a theme change can slow down momentum as the crowd have to get into the new theme id say leave it until he become whc or wwe champ or if when he comes back after ebing sidelined through injury. good theme which, as many here have said, matches him!

FYI The Rock is Samoan not a black man.

You are half right with that statement The Rock is HALF Samoan and HALF Black, his mother was the Daughter of Samoan wrestler "High Cheif" Peter Miavia. His Father was the black wrestler Rocky Johnson, which they got his original ring name "Rocky Miavia" from his dads first name and his grandfathers last name which since they used his last name they played off his samoan heritage more so than they played off his black heritage.

As for Kofi, I think they should keep his current music because it works, dont fix it if it isnt broken.

With the sucess of the push he has having they should leave it alone untill after he wins the Money in The Bank at Wretlemania. Then WWE knows hes serious so they can change him as much as they want. You know give him the championship look

Kofi's music is cool as long as he's a face. If he goes heel at any point i think he would have to change it. To what, i Don't know, would edepend on what kind of heel he became.

I don't see why it matters. Triple H isn't British, but a British heavy metal band play his music. Christian's music used to be sang by a woman, but he isn't one. Just because Kofi isn't being billed as a Jamaican anymore doesn't mean that he isn't allowed to have reggae music. When you consider that just about everything else about his gimmick has remained unchanged, except for the accent, there seems little need to change what is one of the few none generic entrance songs that the WWE has.

I love the theme, however it is time for a change for Kofi. The theme and his trunks, they both resemble a Jamaican which Kofi is no longer. I like most of you feel the theme is a great theme however it is dated now since he has gone to a Ghanian theme. So maybe some remix of it would do nicely to make it seem African.

The guy who sings it is Collie Buddz, a white guy born in Louisinana and raised in Bermuda.. This genre of music is dancehall and fits well with Kofi even if he lost his jamaican gimmick cause it's catchy and compliments his character still...

Do you guys realize the popularity of reggae music in Africa ?

Whether they bill him from the US or from Ghana, West Africa the music still fits the bill.

Kofi changing his entrance theme and using a genre that is not reggae music because he is no longer "Jamaican" makes as much sense as Slam Master J and John Cena changing their themes to rock music because they are white.

I have always liked his theme, but the name still puzzles me.

I mean yes change his location from Jamaica to Ghana West Africa by all means, but Kingston is the capital of Jamaica.
Surely changing Kofi's last name aswell would make more sense also?

I mean come on he lost the gimmick of the accent (even though it was poor in the first place, you could tell he was never really Jamaican)

Give him different music by all means, but that means you would have changed the whole Kofi look and everything that makes Kofi unique.

I liked this kid from day one, but now, don't change him in half, change him fully if you are going to WWE.
Mind as a previous poster said, reggae is the most influential music in Africa.
So I guess the WWE kinda failed on his character once they changed his accent!

Just my two cents!

There's no reason for him to change his music. It's recognizable, serious enough, and a good song by a good artist. There's no way it's "too happy" for his current character, as his character is still happy but gets angry when he needs to. If you want an example of a song too happy for anyone to take seriously, try Primo's. Kofi' song is nothing like Primo's song.

The large hit at the beginning is excellent. It is my belief that every theme song needs to have a recognizable "hook" at the beginning so that you always realize who is coming out. Cena has the horns, JBL had the stock market bell, and The Miz has the AWESOME quote. When that bit at the beginning hits, you know exactly who is coming out without even looking at the Titantron.

Kofi's theme is just fine. It doesn't matter if his gimmick isn't Jamaican anymore. Lots of people listen to reggae, including Kofi Kingston himself. It helped him get over, so why bother changing it, especially when it's working and there's no point in changing it?

Kofi doesn't need new theme music. The themes of wrestlers are changed far too often these days. Once someone has recognizable (and good!) theme music, it shouldn't be changed. More often than not, the replacement song is worse than the previous one.... I'm looking at YOU, Miz!.... Kofi's is one of the songs that does not need replacing. The song is good, and one of the themes that you recognize within seconds of it playing so you know who's going to walk out onto the ramp next. He should not get a new song unless he turns heel, which I don't think will happen for a long time. The current song fits his character for now because it has a more positive tone to it and his character is still happy most of the time.
