Martian Manhunter

ORIGIN:

One version of his origin is that J'onn J'onzz is a Manhunter, a keeper of the peace and authority figure on the planet Mars. Well trained in various skills, including telepathy, shape-shifting, and energy manipulation, and possessing a keen detective's mind with a compassionate heart, J'onn is among the greatest to have served as a Manhunter, and he protected his home for many years.

An Earth scientist named Dr. Saul Erdel, while experimenting with alien (possibly Martian) technology in secret, accidentally pulled J'onzz from Mars to Earth. This sudden revelation of a seven foot tall alien caused Dr. Erdel such a shock that his heart gave out, leaving J'onn stranded on a foreign planet with malfunctioning teleportation technology and no easy way home.

J'onzz resolved to use his time on Earth to help others, upholding truth and justice as he had done on Mars for so many years. He has taken many forms and played many roles over the years: detective, spy, superhero, diplomat, corporate head; J'onn always uses his vast powers and abilities to protect the weak and serve the common good, as the Manhunter from Mars.

The New 52 rendition of Martian Manhunter is given in the back-up pages of Justice League of America. Here the Martians are a telepathic race that is in full commune with one another as well as the planet itself. Green-skinned and white-skinned Martians live in peace, unlike in the previous renditions.

J'onn is supposed to become the next leader of his people and so must undertake a Rite of Passage wherein he must detach himself from his people and understand what it meant to be truly alone. The Martian race had no such concept, as it was a very communal race, and J'onn needed the training in order to lead his people.

Upon his return J'onn finds that the paradise he once knew was burning with nothing much left but ashes. Not a psychic presence could be felt, J'onn was now truly alone. Standing in the burning ruins of the paradise he once knew, J'onn adopted the name "Manhunter" as he is now alone and in search for the being behind his misery.

POWERS, ABILITIES, AND FEATS:

J'onn J'onzz possesses a wide variety of abilities native to the Green Martian race such as superhuman strength, durability, flight, regeneration, shape-shifting, intangibility, invisibility, telepathy, telekinesis, extrasensory input, and optic blasts. Many of his powers resemble those of Superman. Superman once said of him: "He is the most powerful being on the face of the Earth."

J'onn uses his power of shapeshifting for various effects, such as adopting human or monstrous appearance, elongating his limbs, growing to immense size, altering the chemical composition of his body, etc. His default form during Justice League meetings and in public is a "human-friendly" version of his actual birth shape. J'onn can alter his molecular density allowing him to phase-shift, becoming intangible to pass harmlessly through solid objects, or to phase through people and machines in order to damage them or cause pain. He can increase his density allowing him to become virtually invulnerable, but like all his powers it takes extreme concentration. He can also bend the light waves around him to match with his surroundings to become near or completely invisible, he originally acted as an invisible hero or unknown "angel", helping those in need without revealing himself. In the Silver Age story "The Unmasking of J'onn J'onzz" he lost the ability to use his other powers while invisible and was revealed to the world as a Martian superhero, although his civilian identity of John Jones remained a secret. He has demonstrated regenerative abilities, once regenerating his entire body from only his severed head, but with great strain. (Due to the loss of mass, he found it necessary to incorporate new matter from sand.) J'onn can alter his lungs so they can breathe in various atmospheres and environments, he can breathe underwater, such as when he encountered Zauriel in the sea of San Francisco. He can alter the inner valves and chambers in his air canals, allowing him to expel a large amount of air just by exhaling.

A powerful telepath, J'onn can both perceive others' thoughts and project his own thoughts. He often acts as a "switchboard" between the minds of his teammates in order to coordinate their actions. The extent of his telepathic abilities is great; several times he has connected his mind to the entire population of Earth, such as in the Trial by Fire story arc, in which he connects to the whole population of Earth in order to find a rogue telepath who has been brainwashing prominent criminals and political figures. He also uses his telepathy for creating illusions, locating other sentient beings, controlling other’s minds, manipulating memory, inducing sleep, travelling on the astral plane, transferring information to people directly, and creating brain blasts and mental shields. His telekinesis allows him to move objects with his mind, which he describes as "Martian mind-over-matter". He uses his telekinesis to manipulate and move or push multiple objects, as well as to fly at high speeds and to create a telekinetic push or a telekinetic shield.

J'onn possess "Martian Vision" allowing his eyes to see across the electromagnetic spectrum, including X-Ray Vision. He can also project energy beams, known as "Martian Beams", the exact effects of which have varied in different decades from incendiary effects to concussive impacts to disintegration. J'onn also possesses nine senses compared to humans, giving him clearer and more numerable perceptions.

Aside from his superhuman powers, J'onn is also a very capable detective. As Batman mentions in his file, "in many ways, Martian Manhunter is like an amalgam of Superman and the Dark Knight himself".

WEAKNESSES:

One of J'onn's signature traits is his vulnerability to fire. Although it has been an element of the character since his earliest appearances, writers have depicted it with inconsistency throughout the character's long career.

In his earliest appearances, he was shown as having a weakness to fire while in his native Martian form. Over time, this was developed into pyrophobia, with fire being the Martian's "Achilles heel", equivalent to Superman's weakness to Kryptonite. Exposure to fire typically causes J'onn to lose his ability to maintain his physical form, so that he "melts" into a pool of writhing green plasma. One portrayal explained that the flame weakness was tied into Martian telepathy, with fire causing so much chaos in Martian minds that they collapse.[volume & issue needed] It was revealed during the Trial By Fire storyline that the Martian weakness to fire is a built-in psychosomatic effect, placed in the Martian race long ago by the Guardians of the Universe to prevent them from reverting to a previous evolutionary state in which they were highly aggressive, on the verge of interstellar conquest, and in need of flames and the psychic suffering of others in order to reproduce. At the end of the arc, this weakness to mundane fire was removed, with J'onn explaining that now only fires of "psychic significance" could harm him, such as flames of a magical or pyrokinetic nature.

During the Fernus storyline, Batman noted that Martian shapeshifting was an instantaneous reflex based around the psychic study of others, allowing J'onn to adapt rapidly to any opponent's physiology or fighting style. Curiously, this aspect of his power puts him at a slight disadvantage when faced with Plastic Man, who is immune to telepathy (being inorganic) and who has no set fighting style, but is instead described as "inspiration given form", a completely spontaneous and unpredictable being.

In the New 52 the weakness to fire is pyrophobia that is unique to him as a crippling fear, due to the trauma of witnessing the fiery death of his race. J'onn himself notes that it's ridiculous that he is one of the most powerful beings alive and has such a simple weakness.

Vision

latest

ORIGIN:

The robot villain Ultron created the Vision - a type of android he dubs a synthezoid - to use against Ultron's own creator, Dr. Hank Pym . He was named for being the "Vision of Perfection". The Avengers believe that the Vision's body was created from that of the original Human Torch, the android Jim Hammond, while the patterns of his synthetic brain were based on those of the then-deceased Wonder Man. The Avengers would later learn that the time lord Immortus harnessed the power of the Forever Crystal to split the original Human Torch into two separate entities; one body remained the original Torch, while Ultron used the other to create the Vision.

POWERS, ABILITIES, AND FEATS:

When the Vision first appeared and fought the Avengers, he single handedly took them all out. The Vision is described as being "...every inch a human being—except that all of his bodily organs are constructed of synthetic materials." The Solar Jewel on the Vision's forehead absorbs ambient solar energy to provide the needed power for him to function, and he is also capable of discharging this energy as optic beams; with this, he can fire beams of infrared and microwave radiation. In extreme cases he can discharge this same power through the Solar Jewel itself which amplifies its destructive effects considerably, albeit at the cost of losing most of his resources. The Vision also possesses the ability to manipulate his density, which at its lowest allows flight and a ghostly, phasing intangibility, and at its heaviest provides superhuman strength, immovability, and a diamond-hard near invulnerability. The Vision is capable of reaching a density ten times greater than that of depleted uranium. On one occasion, the Vision uses this extreme durability to render unconscious the villain Count Nefaria. If you don't know who Count Nefaria is, just know that he's such a bad ass that not even Thor using his hammer could hurt him. The Vision often uses his ability to alter his density against foes, by phasing an intangible hand through them and then partially re-materializing it—a process he describes as "physical disruption." This effect typically causes great pain and results in incapacitation, as is the case when used against the Earth-712 version of the hero Hyperion. Being an artificial life-form/android of sorts, the Vision possesses multiple superhuman senses—as well as superhuman stamina, reflexes, speed, agility, and strength (even without being at high density). The Vision was trained in unarmed combat by Captain America, and is an expert in the combat use of his superhuman powers. The Vision is an expert on his own construction and repair, and is a highly skilled tactician and strategist. The Vision controls his density by interfacing with an unknown dimension to/from which he can shunt or accrue mass, thus becoming either intangible or extraordinarily massive. The Vision also possesses superhuman analytical capabilities, and has the ability to process information and make calculations with superhuman speed and accuracy.

After the Age of Ultron, Vision joins the Avengers A.I. team where his "evolve" protocols were activated and now his body is formed from millions of nanobots.

The Vision of the Young Avengers is able to use Iron Lad's neuro-kinetic armor to recreate the former Vision's abilities, including strength, density manipulation, and flight. The yellow solar cell on the Vision's forehead can also emit a beam of infrared and microwave radiation. The Vision is also capable of energy and holographic manipulation, shapeshifting and time travel.

WEAKNESSES:

Vision is not particularly vulnerable to anything special.

WHO WINS?

Generally speaking, several of their abilities are quite similar to one another. Aside from their various physical attributes, both have the ability to become intangible. Neither of these characters are known for being particularly vicious, both are about as outside as outsiders can get with MM being the last one of his kind and Vision being an android forever trying to reconcile his artificial form with humanity.

Vision is completely synthetic, so I don't see how much use MM's telepathic abilities will be. If Vision turns completely intangible or increases his density to its upper most level, MM probably won't be able to affect him telekinetically either. In terms of sheer raw strength, I think MM has a significant advantage though, again, both of them being able to turn intangible could make it difficult. One advantage Vision has is that as he's completely synthetic, he's doesn't suffer from fatigue and while MM's stamina is certainly far above ordinary human levels, he's eventually gonna get tired.

If some sort of raging fire ignites during the course of their battle and Vision is able to quickly detect MM's great fear of it in time, it could make all the difference. While his attention is focused on the blaze, I could see his guard lowering just enough for Vision to materialize his hand partially through MM's body, it could be enough to end the fight as something like that would almost certainly cause an extreme shock to the nervous system.

It could go either way really, but I'm leaning towards Vision.
