Jumping off the top rope - DQ?

Can somebody enlighten me on this? For the longest time, I have always seen referees begin to count when a wrestler climbs up to the top rope. I can only assume that this is similar to a count where you must break a choke hold before 5 or risk getting DQ'd. But that leads me to wonder...

*When was the last time somebody ever got DQd for jumping off the top rope or not beating the ref's count for jumping off the rope?

A wrestler actually can be DQed for being on the top rope longer than 5 seconds. I haven't seen it happen but I'm sure somewhere somebody did it. I'm guessing the In Real Life reason for it is to prevent wrestlers from being injured by falling or getting knocked off. Back in the olden days until about the mid 90s in soem feds it was actually a disqualification to throw somebody over the top rope. That was to prevent injuries too.

I think yesterday on NXT was the last time it happened. Unless you knew that and mean before that.

I though it was always a case of the ropes, Using the ropes to your advantage, but that doesnt sound like it makes much sense...

A five count is the standard for stop doing what youre doing, so there must be a rule there somewhere!

Though i've never fully understood the role of the ref... Though they just call a match as it plays out, or are they in on the meetings and whatever?

From reading a few of the biographies, it seems only the wrestlers are in on it, but some cases call for otherwise!

It appears that none of you were misfortunate enough to watch WCW during the Bill Watts era of the early 90's. He banned all top rope moves because he didn't think fans wanted to see people flipping around. Mind you at the time two of their main stars were Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat who used a top rope cross-body for years and their Light Heavyweight Champion "Flyin" Brian Pillman. I supposed he didn't want anyone to take more attention away from his black hole of a son, Erik.
