Initial speculation had douchebag Billy Bob Thorton playing the killer. But, thankfully, a better actor has been selected instead!

Jackie Earle Haley, who recently played Rorschach in Watchmen, will now be wearing the razor glove and trademark red and green sweater.

The film's direct, Samuel Bayer, says of Haley, "Looking at his performance in Watchmen, here's a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him. And in Nightmare he is going to be under prosthetic make-up. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character."

Filming is set to start on May 5, 2009 in Chicago

Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor. He was tremendous in Little Children and I'm sure he'll do well as Freddy Krueger. It's shocking to see the little bad ass from Bad News Bears disappear for over thirty years, just to return as such a terrific actor. Him being cast makes me want to see this automatically.

And I wouldn't call Billy Bob Thorton a douchebag; in fact, I'd go as far as to say I'm a big fan of the guy and his work, but I'm glad he didn't accept this role. I just can't see him making a good Freddy Kruger.

I think its a good choice,i've heard nothing but good things about him in watchmen and its nice they didn't go for the big name.

Assuming that picture is of Hayley, it looks exactly like the original (which is never a bad thing). However, an actor is only as good as the storyline the movie is given.....so it'll be interesting to see what they have in store for the movie.

Earle Haley is actually a good choice for the film...shame I didn't think of him beforehand.

Anyway, I have some reservations about Samuel Bayer helming the first installment of this franchise reboot. This isn't to say that he won't amount to something, but, from what I am aware of, he is nothing more than a music video director, and I would have never given this to someone who is unproven. Well, here's to hoping he knocks it out of the park; however, I am almost positive that Pascal Laugier's reboot of the Hellraiser franchise is going to blow this one away.
