Papa Pillman
I've got more Ho's than Jim Duggan
I have no idea what he was up to in ROH. At Lockdown, the selling was OK but because there were several in the match, it was a bit easy for him. I though he did a terrible job when he faced Roode and ruined part of the match in the video I had put on and marked. I think it was the same match where he was Irish-wipped into a turnbuckle and instead of turning around normally before hitting it, he jumped and twisted round instead. It looked so stupid. Sure, he reacts when getting hit but it doesn't look real enough. He sells it but I'm never sold on it. Eddie seems OK but I'd like to see him in 1 on 1 action.
What was Davey's character over in ROH anyway?
I guess I misinterpreted the criticism. Davey's selling has always been the top sticking point of the critics of his in-ring work.
But in the past that was people labeling him as someone who didn't sell at all. Which wasn't entirely inaccurate. But it really became exaggerated when Eddie and Davey were positioned as world champions who were the faces of the Cornette era of ROH, which put a lot of emphasis on their strong style approaches, mimicking MMA, and putting a premium on an accelerated workrate that lead to a lot of no selling in the traditional sense.
What you're seeing from Davey now is a style of selling he never employed in the past, and I think its his way of adapting as well as sticking it to the people that said he didn't sell enough to make it past the independent level.
I guess he could be accused of overselling to a degree or in a manner that some could find awkward, but atleast its not in the comedic fashion of the BroMans(which works for them, but wouldn't for an undersized and intense babyface) or in the eye-rolling fashion of a guy like Dolph Ziggler for example.
While the Wolves have in many ways been allowed to be themselves, it should also be said that Davey and Eddie are also making a big transition stylistically in other ways. As good as they've been, they're still finding their footing. Soon they will settle down and really get comfortable, both guys are phenomenal workers individually and they've always meshed seemlessly since teaming up as well.
