I love the Pg era, I really do.
Lets face it pro wrestling has always garnered to kids it's not a statement it's a fact. In my fathers era he had guys like BoBo Brazil and Haystacks Calhoun ( who made a cameo in the movie Requiem For A Champion ) Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas etc. And even in his day the kids ate it up.
So hear I am born in the early 80's people tell me my first words were not even words it was WWF NWA. My childhood heroes were Jimmy Snucka, Randy Savage, Legion Of Doom, Magnum TA, Ricky Steamboat, Sting and of course Hulk Hogan. My villains were The Horsemen Andre The Giant and anyone who belonged to the Heenan and Fuji Families. That was it for me my childhood my innocence no matter how bad things were I couldn't wait for Saturdays when i could cheer and boo the human comic book characters.
Around the late 80's early 90's i noticed wrestling take a darker turn. Tully Blanchard slaps Bobby Doll, the cunning Jake "The Snake" Roberts and the scary introduction of Kane The Undertaker that's when it hit me wrestling was changing was I going to hate on it because as I was growing up the industry was changing no because with those "bad guys" I still had Sting and Bret Hart to battle the evil doers.
Then here comes the Attitude era. I was a teen by the beginning my parents divorced, The Monday Night Wars were at the start like all teens I rebelled and wrestling still was my outlet especially ECW. That is when I learned to do bad things to people because that is what i saw on tv. The outside world was grey so was my outlet. I could no longer tell who was the good guy and who was the bad guy my innocence was gone.
Hogan the biggest good guy of all time turned heel, for no reason people started booing Bret Hart, wrestling crowds started chanting " She's A Crack ****e " towards the females and it brought me in to that grey world where nothing was off limits. I changed just like the industry did. The only thing the Attitude era taught me was VIOLENCE.
Now here we have the new PG era. Once again I know the good guys from the bad guys. The crowds have the families back the chants are toned down it doesn't mean the crowds are generic it means people have learned the words decorum and respect. We can chant "CENA SUCKS" but not cross the line and chant "FUCK YOU CENA" because we know the kids are back in the arenas and watching on tv in bigger numbers. You could take your kids to a WWE event today and not have to deal with some drunk asshole who loves to cuss around the little ones like you would at a MLB, NFL or NBA event.
You don't have to like the Pg era but you have to respect it. Pro wrestling has always been for the kids and the kid in us. So lets not take that away from the current crop of youngsters in the crowds.
