Cutting is not for suicide attempts or mutilation, even though these things can happen. Cutting is a persons way of expressing emotional pain, which they can't cope with or explain, into a physical form. Pretty much, they see the cuts on their arms and know why that hurts, but they cut because it hurts inside and they can't explain it.

I would advise talking to mental health professional but some methods that cutters use to keep from cutting are to rub ice packs on the area where they usually cut. The numbing cold can usually substitute well for the physical act. Also giving a cutter a red marker to use in place of a blade or cutting instrument helps with the visual aspect. But all in all, you should talk to someone about her asap.
