Seahawks cut T.J. Houshmandzadeh

Associated Press

SEATTLE -- Receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh was sent packing from Seattle on Saturday, cut by the Seahawks after just one season as coach Pete Carroll continued his roster purge.

Houshmandzadeh, the Seahawks' leading receiver last season, was in the second year of a $40 million, five-year deal he signed with Seattle before the 2009 season. But he came to Seattle under a different regime with Jim Mora as coach and Tim Ruskell the general manager. Both Mora and Ruskell were gone after Seattle went 5-11 last season and now so is Houshmandzadeh.

Last season, Houshmandzadeh caught 79 passes for 911 yards and three touchdowns, his fewest receptions since 2005 and his fewest touchdowns since 2002. But he was still clearly the Seahawks No. 1 receiver.

That changed this spring when Carroll gave former Southern California star Mike Williams another opportunity after becoming a bust in Detroit. Williams took advantage of the opportunity with 10 catches for 177 yards and a touchdown during the preseason. Deion Branch will be the other receiver opposite Williams, with rookie Golden Tate, Deon Butler and Ben Obomanu rounding out the receiving corps.

Even with his release, Houshmandzadeh is guaranteed $7 million for the 2010 season.

Idk about this move, I think if you invest $40 mil. into a player, and he's still guaranteed $7 mil. then what do you really have to lose by giving him a second season, and seeing if he can improve, I think TJ still has what it takes to be a good WR in the NFL, and will likely end up going to the Vikings who could really use some help in that department with Rice out, Harvin having migraine issues, and them just releasing Walker, TJ could really step up in Min., who if I remember right he was close to signing with before last season, I think this is gonna be one of those decision that just ends up benifiting the player more than the team that released him

What's your take?, was this a good decision?, and where do you think Housmenzadeh will end up?

As a Seahawk fan, it's easy for me to see why this move was made. The Seahawks are a rebuilding team. We have a lot of young players on offense, like Washington, Forsett, Tate, Carlson, Butler and Williams who will all have their name called more with Housh playing elsewhere. There is no reason to have a receiver on the wrong side of 30 taking away reps from our under-25 club when a 7-9 season would be considered a huge success.

Now, if only we could cut Hasselbeck...

On a side note: I wish we had called the Viking front office and offered Housh for a draft pick. I'm sure we could have gotten a 5th rounder.

I thought this was a very interesting move. I was really surprised that The Seahawks released T.J. The Seahawks have a ton of un-proven receivers. I think this is just Pete Carroll wanting his own guys wouldn't surprise me if Deion Branch is next to go. As for T.J im sure he has plenty of options and I actually see him going to Washington due to their really weak receiving corps.

I think it was a good move. T.J. showed he wasn't to happy there. They're in rebuild mode right now, with Housh being a little older and him having that big contract, they just eat a chunk of it this year and are done with him. His big contract is probably why they didn't bother to try and trade him for at least some draft picks, now teams can sign him for a little under a million while Seattle picks up the rest of the tab. I'm sure if he would've put up a little better numbers they might have kept him for another year, that just made it a little easier to let him go.

I could definitely see him going to the Minnesota, they were close to signing him last year and I think the reason he didn't go there was because the QB situation was up in the air, before Favre signed there. With the injury to Rice and Harvin's migraine problems they might just offer him a one year deal. Washington is another decent choice for him to go, they really need help in the WR spot. With a bunch of guys still waiting to bust out, and injuries they need help as well. New England might be another team to sign him as well, with Welker coming back from injury and them losing Holt, he might end up there as well.

I won't dispute it being a good move or a bad move, cause I don't know enough about the Seahawk organization to form an opinion. However, I do know Housh to be a very solid receiver who did some really good things in Cincinnati. I also know that they signed him to a huge contract and am shocked that they released him after only one season. That is a big contract to just throw away after only one season. It just amazes me how teams throw around money sometimes. Well, I hope the best for TJ, he is a good receiver and I know he will find work somewhere, not with my Colts of course, but hopefully somewhere.

TJ Houshmandzadeh has signed a one year deal with the Baltimore Ravens, making their receiving corps even stronger. TJ said that Ray Lewis recruited him and told him that Baltimore was the place to be if he wanted to win. The Ravens receiving corps now includes TJ, Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, and Donte Stallworth, although Stallworth is out until October with a broken foot.

This gives Flacco another great weapon as TJ is one of the better possession receivers in the game. I already had the Ravens going to the Super Bowl and this is certainly going to help that prediction come true. Great pick up by Baltimore and great move by TJ as he returns to the division where he had his best years.

Well ESPN it is reported that the Ravens have signed him to a 1 year deal

Houshmandzadeh's deal is worth $855,000, according to league sources. Seattle still owes Houshmandzadeh $6.15 million, meaning the receiver will make a total of $7 million this season.

That gives them a lot a depth at the WR spot now, with the signings of Boldin and Stallworth. It is also good if Stallworth doesn't pan out, since he has been out of football with the suspension. Very good move for Baltimore!
