Honest opinion on Vince

Championship Contender
Honestly, what do you think of the guy?

I'll post what I think of him later.

I really cant say what I think of him personally, because Ive never met him before...

But as far as his on-air character goes, I think he is a very charismatic guy who can make anyone absolutely hate him. The rivalries hes been involved with are some of the most memorable ones in wrestling history (with Austin, Rock, Taker etc)
Hes a good entertainer.

I think he's a good guy, personally. Don't agree with everything he does or believes in, but I truly believe he has a heart and is a pretty decent person.

On-air wise, dug his shit in the late nineties, but I think he's overdone it since he started that feud with his daughter and 'Taker years back. If I were never to see Vince's face on Raw ever again, it wouldn't bother me in the least bit. That's how much I've been sick of his on-air character the last couple of years.

Vince is a promotional genius. Simple as that. He made WWE what it is today; a huge empire that makes a LOT of money every year. The man is incredible.

On air, he is one of the best characters ever.

I don't know him personally so I can't say much about how he is outside of the ring. He seems like a typical business man though in that he is willing to step on others to get to the top. The whole Montreal screw job and the supposed bad treatment of JR, Cole, and Foley makes Vince seem a lot like his Mr. McMahon character.

I think Vince seems like a pretty stand up guy out of character. I have obviously never met the guy but, I think he is more like his character than what people really think.

His Mr. McMahon character is very well done. He is/was a very athletic 'superstar' in the WWE when he would put himself into matches. Almost every feud he has been in has been memorable (Vince/Taker, Vince/HHH, Vince/HBK, Vince/Austin, Vince/Rock, etc.) If Vince were to all the sudden never be seen again on TV, I would be very disappointed because I feel he is still going to do something huge for the business.

On air? i always enjoy a Vince vs ? fued. Everyone loves to watch him get his ass whipped, and the build up is always classic.

Business man? If you measure by success, then he's one of the best. If you look at it ethically? No, not at all. Rather than work to make your product better than everyone else's he just bought them all out, thereby creating a great promotion by combining the best elements of the competition into 1, and thinking that's all he would have to do, and he'd be the reigning king of Sports entertainment forever.
Then Eric Bischoff came along, took as much money as Ted Turner could throw at him, and did the same to Paul Heyman and Vince as Vince had done to the Crockett's and the Gagne's etc, but at the same time he actually produced a wrestling show that popped up out of nowhere and put on a better wrestling broadcast (plus they openly cheated). That made Vince have to actually buckle down and think of some way to beat WCW and some of the elements that helped them do it came about by accident. If Stone Cold hadn't been booked to win the KOTR, OR if he hadn't beaten Jake Roberts, wud we have had 4 years of Austin v McMahon? We certainly wouldn't have had Austin 3:16 that's for sure. If Bret Hart had decided to put HBK over in Montreal, would we have had the McMahon character be born? If Rocky Maivia had been loved by the fans instead of getting jeered for months on end would Dwayne Johnson be a Hollywood Star right now?

IMO if Paul Hayman had been given control of WCW, WCW would have definitely won the Monday Night War, or if ECW had had McMahon/Turner Money we'd be talking about whether Sabu would defend the title in another Barbed Wire match instead of whether it's necessary for a 2nd Women's belt.

Vince McMahon knows that his is the only game in town because there's no competition.

"Why bother doing all that stuff i did in the late 90's now that i'll get all the viewers with a 2 hour Colin Delaney vs Khali squash match every week for the next year? I can have all my Doink the Clowns and Koko B Ware's back again. And if that doesn't work i can get guys like Andre except instead of just one i can have like 3 or 4. People liked Andre 20 years ago they'll love 3 7" guys in the here and now surely?" - i honestly think this is how Vince's brain operates now. He has reverted back to the way he thought b4 he was in trouble. If TNA suddenly started beating Raw in the ratings every week instead of beating ECW once every other month, and did it in the USA ratings and not in other countries (where TNA actually does beat WWE in the ratings consistently i'm told) then he might be more committed to thinking along the attitude lines again. Only if he fails to gain any kids support, and starts losing the 18-35 male demographic will Vince start doing the things we in the IWC whine about day in and day out. Why bother working your ass off, if you're still going to make millions without really trying?

Also, having seen his treatment of Foley and JR over the last decade, 2 guys who've worked their asses off for Vince for years and he continues to humiliate them and put them in positions that they hate, i can't honestly say i think very much of Vince McMahon the wrestling promoter. His only saving grace is that he'll do anything that he'd make his staff do (although, i haven't seen Vince literally kissing anyone's ass yet)

Vince McMahon the Millionaire Celebrity? Great guy. It's wonderful to see a guy dedicate as much time and effort to organizations like the Make-a-wish foundation and actually flying out to show support to the armed forces as often as they do. That is the sort of stuff ALL celebrities should be doing on a regular basis.

In conclusion, it depends how you look at Vince, i personally think he's a great talent, and a great person as a celeb/millionaire. As a wrestling promoter i think he's slipping and needs to be scared back into shape (but what do i know?) and as a boss he is a real hard ass, based on what i've watched and read.

I always thought it was a business :headscratch:

Yes, of course it is. And no, there is nothing ethically wrong with looking after the people who earn him money.

However, I personally wouldn't cost hundreds of people their jobs by simply buying their company and then ditching the majority of them, before trying to beat them in a competitive manner (but that's just me). Vince Snr didn't buy out shed loads of territories did he? (But then Vince Snr said 'never get in the ring' and Vince did that too.) I'm just saying, he took the easy way out in the beginning, had to work his ass off to stay afloat when someone used his tactics better than him, and has now reverted back to that slump before Eric Bischoff challenged him to work as hard as Eric and Paul did trying to compete with Vince as well as each other.

It's not a slump for Vince. He's still making lots of money. Why would he even care about people he's never met anyway? Or even people he has met but isn't friends with?

When i say a slump, i don't mean business wise. I should have expressly said that i meant a slump in creativity, because you have to agree, the creativity is at an all time low in the last few years, what with no sense of divisions anymore and giving focus to the upper mid car tier and forgetting everything else below that. The ratings dip is evidence of a business slump but with reality tv being the 'in-thing' plus other factors that now affect the ratings, such as tivo and youtube, it's hard to tell who's still watching and who isn't and why.

Why care about people he's never met? Because it's what a decent human being would take into consideration i guess. But business has no place for good guys i spose who mean well, so i'd best learn that well if i ever want to start a business. I appreciate everything he's done for the business, but i think, knowing how great the attitude era was, that Vince McMahon could easily have still become the king of sports entertainment if he'd adopted that path from the start instead of when he desperately needed to, and then giving it up again.
