Hell In A Cell 2013 - Discussion & Aftermath thread

The Eighties

Forward Thinking Nostalgist
The WWE Title and WHC matches are set for the event but I thought we could use a thread to discuss what other matches will fill out the card.

It seems almost certain that Punk vs Ryback will happen again as Punk pretty much put it out there tonight. Hopefully they get them a stip this time to try and lift the match, maybe falls count anywhere in order to make it the complete opposite of the Hell in a Cell match.

Big Show finally knocked Triple H out tonight, I wonder if we may see them face off at HIAC or if maybe Ambrose will go first and then Triple H will face Show at the Survivor Series in a team setting instead.

After their win at Battleground I think Cody and Goldust vs The Shield for the Tag titles seems a good shout and it should be a quality match.

Bray Wyatt vs The Miz? The Real Americans vs Los Matadores? An IC title defense for Axel?

We already know that Bryan will face Orton at HIAC inside the HIAC structure with Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee. We also know that Alberto Del Rio will face John Cena for the WHC.

As for the WWE Championship, I think this is the payoff in which Bryan wins the title and does so with some help from one of his mentors. Or, at the very least, I think HBK will wind up helping to prevent some interference. I don't see him stabbing Bryan in the back, though there's a degree of uncertainty.

As for Del Rio vs. Cena, this was definitely a surprise. There are some reports suggesting that Cena MIGHT not actually be wrestling in the match. PWInsider.com reports that the announcement of Cena's return took most people backstage by surprise and some feel that he won't be wrestling, with his return being part of some sort of angle. I believe there's more to this that what we know and what's been revealed thus far. Unless Cena got himself a healing factor like Wolverine, I don't see him recovering this fast. Even if he has, I don't see WWE taking the risk of bringing him back so soon. Raw's ratings haven't been fantastic but as I've pointed out in a few threads, they're better than they were during the same time period last year; and that was with Cena front & center. So the ratings haven't dropped to panic levels.

Also, as others have pointed out in a few other posts in a couple of threads, Cena's genuinely injured elbow is something that Del Rio could target. Maybe it's just an example of people seeing what they want to see, but Del Rio's recent use of the steel chair in applying the Cross Armbreaker to RVD & Ricardo could be a bit of a hint of something else. I'm sure Cena will return in the next couple of weeks, at least the go home Raw for HIAC, with Cena hyping himself as 100% healthy and ready to go. Del Rio attacks him and winds up "reinjuring" Cena's elbow with the Cross Armbreaker, using the steel chair, etc. as a means of setting up something else for HIAC and as a means to further justify Cena being out of action until around the Royal Rumble. There was no mention of the WHC being held inside the HIAC structure so it probably won't be. After all, Sheamus vs. Show at last year's HIAC was for the WHC and it wasn't held inside the Cell.

As for the rest of the card, I think another given is that The Rhodes' will take on Rollins & Reigns in a return tag match from Battleground. Whether or not it'll be for the tag titles is anybody's guess.

I'd say there'll also be another Punk vs. Ryback bout at the event. As I said, I don't think the WHC will be held inside the Cell, but maybe they'll have this match take place inside it. I don't know why they only went with one Cell match at last year's event and see no reason why they should this year either.

Depending on what goes down with AJ in the next few weeks, they might do something with the Divas Championship. Maybe it'll be declared vacant with the Divas having a battle royal or something to crown a new champ.

I think Axel & Ambrose both need some singles feuds for their title. I know Axel has things going on with R-Truth but I think that'll be ending Friday with Truth getting one more shot at the IC title. Ambrose will probably, at least, be out there during the predicted return tag match supporting Rollins & Reigns. For a while, it looked as though he & Ziggler had something going before it was put on the backburner for the Rhodes angle, so maybe they'll wind up starting it up again in the next few weeks.

I think there's a chance that we'll see The Miz take on Bray Wyatt. The Miz TV segment seemed strange & unnecessary last night, seeming to serve no other purpose than to indicate that Miz will be Wyatt's next target. It looks like WWE isn't in a huge hurry with Wyatt, though that doesn't bother me, and are having him work his way through a number of the top mid-card talents on the roster.

I'd say there'll also be another Punk vs. Ryback bout at the event. As I said, I don't think the WHC will be held inside the Cell, but maybe they'll have this match take place inside it. I don't know why they only went with one Cell match at last year's event and see no reason why they should this year either.

I think the main reason to only have one HIAC match at the event is to try and prevent diluting the gimmick any further and make the main event special.

I think adding Ziggler vs Ambrose would be good for the card and the US title, and Dolph won their last title match by DQ so technically he's due a rematch. I'm not sure who Axel can face if he dusts off Truth on Smackdown, as there are only 2 weeks to the PPV. Maybe the match with Truth ends in a no contest or Axel is Dq'd, setting up another title match at HIAC that they can actually try and develop over the next 4 TV shows.

Obviously we already know most of the matches before they even get announced. First of all my match card:
Randy Orton vs Daniel Bryan for the vacant WWE title in a Hell in a Cell match
CM Punk vs Ryback in a hell in a cell match
Alberto Del Rio (c) vs John Cena for the World heavyweight championship singles match
Triple H vs The Big Show grudge match
Bray Wyatt vs The Miz grudge match
As for my predictions, I think John Cena wins the World title and finally brings back some needed prestige back to the World title. As for his first feud I think Sandow is an option and this also elevates Sandow as a star. I think CM Punk goes over Ryback and finally brings an end to this storyline, their match at Battleground was bad IMO but maybe this one will be better.

I think Orton finally wins back the WWE title after prematurely losing it. He has no developed his old persona back in being the sadistic, evil Viper so as a result I think he wins. Bryan leaves the title picture for a while and moves onto a possible feud with Triple H. I was thinking that we could see a match between those two, seeing as it's Survivor Series and HHH has not wrestled since an episode of Raw back in May.

As for the Big Show vs HHH match, I believe that HHH would need to win to establish himself as the authority figure of the WWE and keep strong.

What if Truth takes the title on Smackdown and Axel's rematch is at HIAC? I think it gives legitimacy to the feud, and could impact Axel's relationship with Heyman

This card is shaping up nicely. Cena/Del Rio should provide some interesting moments and possibly a cash in. Bryan/Orton should finally be resolved with a clear winner. Punk will get his shot at Heyman again this time in a HIAC handicap match. This feud has gotten stale for me, but I see Heyman finally getting a full out beating inside the cell. I could see them adding The Shield vs Cody and Dustin Rhodes in their rematch for the tag titles. I guess it would be too much to ask to have an IC and US title match as well, but I guess that is a possibility.

Well three matches are booked and The Shield vs The Rhodes vs The Usos and AJ vs Brie Bella are both rumoured to be matches that will be added in the coming week.

I think the big question now is whether Big Show vs Triple H will happen. My guess is that they will hold off until Survivor Series but you never know, they want this card stacked after the negativity over the last 2 PPV's.

We have 5 matches plus a pre-show match set after tonight's Raw, which still leaves room for a couple more matches as well as some random Santino comedy stuff that will probably be added as a piss break.

I think it's possible that The Real Americans vs Los Matadores could be added on Smackdown, it may seem a bit soon but this is not exactly a feud that takes a lot of developing. I'd also love to see Ambrose defend his US title but I think him, Dolph and Sandow will be out of luck, although Ambrose will no doubt feature in the tag title match.

The other match I can see being added is Bray Wyatt vs The Miz given Bray said he was going to take Miz to the Gates of Hell, although given his bad wheel a six man might be a better option, with maybe The PTP as Miz's partners.

5 matches is too light for a ppv so we should see one or maybe two more matches added to the card. Candidates include Wyatt v Miz, and Real Americans v Los Matadores. No idea on where Kane is at and when he should return, but if they put Wyatt and Miz on, it would be nice to see Kane come back to and set something up for Survivor Series that sees The Wyatt family take on Kane, Miz and maybe Kofi or another face.

One of the biggest talking points of the year is how will WWE end HIAC. I have seen lots of different theories from writers on different websites now I want to know how would YOU end HIAC?

I would have Bryan and Orton have 20 minutes of great action and then they do a big spot which leaves both men down in the ring and then HHH walks out with the Shield and then when they are outside the cage Show comes out of the crowd and the Shield beat him down and then HHH forces a ref to open the cell and then Reigns get in the ring looking to be lining up a spear on Bryan but instead deliberately spears Orton and then the Shield triple powerbomb Orton and HBK (who calls it down the middle) counts 1-2-3 and Bryan is the new champ and as he leaves HHH (still heel) cuts a promo about how Orton is worthless and then stops Bryan who is walking up the ramp and says the new face of the company is ... Cody Rhodes (who lost the tag titles to The Shield) who attacks Bryan to end the show. A new champ is crowned and a new HHH guy is announced. Also I would have Orton cutting a promo in response on Raw Monday Night and then have the Shield attack and right him off (he has not had too many matches this year and even having him as the new/old viper Orton doesn't interest me)

Your thoughts on my ending and what would you do?

Cody Rhodes as cool as all of that would be it just doesn't make any logical sense but then well the WWE doesn't practice much logic so the hell with it. I'm down with that scenario. It's quite epic and would be something new and give Orton a reason to conjure a new mean streak that's much needed.

I however believe the WWE will not surprise us and Orton will win with help from the Shiels distracting or even the method that you expressed Hunter will have the cage opened to have shield attack Bryan and give Orton the win. Though that would also be illogic as Steph and Hunter didn't award Orton the title for not being aggressive. So oh well guess we'll just have to see

This PPV created zero buzz. Crowd was quiet after the main event... the internet isn't talking... nobody is hashtagging anything... and I feel like I'm alone on these forums...

It was an odd ending. I know Michaels' sweet chin music makes him look like a heel, but the way he looked after the fact means there is more to it than just that. I expect this to drag on, but the loss doesn't help DB in the long run. People have said this was the match he needed to win or he'll lose a lot of his momentum. How much long can people take him him chasing the title, but never winning it?

Its simple. IWC poster child didn't win so the boards are quiet. Going into the show my first choice was for the title to be held up again, with my second choice being Orton winning the title. Bryan will get his win and title reign when it makes the most sense. Why waste it at one of the smaller ppv's when Survivor Series and the Rumble are right around the corner.

HBK turning on Bryan was so predictable and felt forced, just to keep the feud alive. I'm not a fan of titles changing hands very often so I was disappointed to see Orton lose the title after just 1 month. Logically it makes sense to put the title on Orton for a longer period because he won Money in the Bank. Personally I don't find this feud to be very interesting, neither Orton nor Bryan have the mic skills or the charisma to keep the feud going from September to April and their matches haven't been anything special. They're just needlessly going to drag this angle until Wrestlemania for the hell of it. I hope Punk is now done with Heyman and is reintroduced into the title picture.

The WHC scene looks very interesting now with Cena as champ. Cody's matches since MITB have been fantastic and with Sandow not having cashed in yet there are so many possibilities if the WWE is willing to actually create good feuds and hype for the WHC. I doubt the WHC will ever close out PPV's again even with Cena as world champ due to the involvement of HHH and Stephanie in the WWE title feud but I think the WHC matches in the upcoming PPV's would be more interesting to watch than the WWE title matches. Until today I used to be in favor of merging the 2 world titles and having 1 undisputed championship but now I think the world title should exist. The world title match was the main reason I was excited for this PPV.

In the way he lost, however, one would think that more people would be on and upset, especially with Bryan being screwed once again. If there's anything that generally draws out the masses, it's not to tout WWE(or TNA, for that manner) when they do something perceived as right, it's to bash them for doing something wrong.

LSN's Hell In A Cell Hits and Misses:

Hell In A Cell Hits:

The Rhodes vs. The Usos vs. The Shield: This was tag team wrestling at its best. The 'organized chaos' of the match was excellent, especially Cody's superplex onto the other members of the match on the outside. It got the crowd hot from the start, rightfully earning them the This Is Awesome chant that they received. I liked the psychology of the match as well, as Goldust at one point was almost forced to tag in an Uso because Cody was on the ground, and he was being worked over badly. A fantastic opener to the show with the right team winning, as it was simply too soon to remove the belts from the Rhodes. An excellent contest with solid work from all three teams. ***1/4.

Kane returns: Miz showed great babyface intensity in calling out Bray Wyatt in a situation where he had to know he would be over-matched, but the return of Kane was the highlight here. I was of the belief that Kane would return as part of the Wyatt family following the events of Summerslam, so it was a surprising direction to me. It's a feud look forward to see being explored more on Raw, and what they do with Kane's character.

Paul Heyman's promo: In anyone else's hands, this may have been eye-rolling, but Heyman's proclamation of being the devil himself rang true. I like that he incorporated that he did many despicable things on Punk's behalf, showing that he wasn't entirely blameless either. The promo was made even more effective by the fact that Heyman got his comeuppance following the match. Further, this signals the end of the feud, which has run its course. The match itself wasn't very good, but the before and after were quite effective in what should close the chapter on this feud.

Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena: Cena slipped another attempt at the cross-arm breaker, and hit the AA for the win. It's the 14th World Title for Cena, meaning he's won more than anyone in history, save Ric Flair. Del Rio had a nice run with the belt, and while I'm surprised they didn't go the DQ route and have Cena win at Survivor Series in Boston, this worked too. The predictable but smart story was told with Del Rio working over Cena's arm, only for Cena to show hes 100% healthy. These two have had better matches, but this was still very good. Cena's stamina was high and he showed little ring rust. The beginning was a little slow, but they built to a nice pace with a satisfying climax. ***

AJ Lee vs. Brie Bella: This was a solid buffer match, and Brie is beginning to come into form as a babyface, as evidenced from the nice pop she received from her entrance. This was also the right move in keeping the title on AJ, as there's simply no one in the division who can touch her right now. This also appears to be setting up a Bella Twin split, which could be interesting if done right. *3/4.

Randy Orton vs. Daniel Bryan: Never in this match did I get the feeling that Bryan would be walking away with the title. Between HBK as the referee and his overall dominance of Orton when they actually wrestle, it seemed WWE was coming close to making Orton seem irrelevant based on his continued losing. For now, WWE made the right move in going with Orton, and gave Bryan an out after being superkicked by HBK. It's an interesting dynamic, as HBK seemingly reacted out of friendship with HHH, and wasn't truly a heel here. The fallout will be interesting, and this was a good match, without the need for the Cell. Bryan and Orton work well together, and this was no different. A good main event. ***1/2.

Overall Show: Barely a hit. With three matches over 3 stars, it makes for a good PPV, though nothing jumped out here as great. From the top of the card to the bottom it will be interesting to see where the fallout is. Where do the Shield and Usos go from here? Where does CM Punk go now, with his Paul Heyman feud over? Big E. Langston has a chance to be elevated in a major way, and the Divas division feels like it is slowly coming off life support. Both championship matches were good ones, and it will be interesting to see how WWE presents the World Title with Cena now holding it. The WWE Title scene remains overbooked and convoluted, but there's a champion finally. A thumbs slightly up PPV. C+.

Hell In A Cell Misses:

Damien Sandow vs. Kofi Kingston: It was good to see Sandow get both a clean win and a useful finisher, but this match wasn't enticing enough that it would hook viewers on the fence. Kofi continues to be wasted with meaningless matches, as he's extremely over. Bottom line, WWE needs to get a match with an actual feud onto their pre-show, and while it's not their fault Axel got hurt, but this match was of no consequence except to give Sandow a win. *1/2.

Summer Rae/Fandango vs. Khali/Natalya: This match was of no conseqence, although it was nice to see that Summer Rae is a capable wrestler. She'll be a welcome addition to the Divas if used on a regular basis. However, this was a thrown together match based on a "feud" that began Friday night, and there was no payoff or meaning to this match other than it being Summer's debut. *1/4.

Dean Ambrose vs. Big E Langston: WWE was boxed into a corner with Langston, as Axel's injury left him without an opponent. Ambrose was a capable and legitimate replacement, but the match simply wasn't good. Langston looked silly spearing Ambrose outside the ring then not breaking the count to bring him back in. It was the only real ending they couldgo with based upon the on-the-fly booking, but they went about it poorly. Langston has a lot of potential as a babyface, and hopefully WWE will capitalize on it soon. **

CM Punk vs. Ryback: The before with the Heyman promo was excellent, as was the aftermath with Punk finally getting his hands on Heyman uninhibited. However, this was likely the dullest Hell In A Cell match I've ever seen. Both men simply don't work well together, other than their TLC match in January. Punk did his best here and the ending sequence was a good one, but it didn't make up for the dullness of the rest of the match. **1/4.

Los Matadores vs. The Real Americans: While it was refreshing to see Los Matadores face off against someone other than 3MB, this wasn't very good. Cesaro continues to stand out and be excellent, but he's also being wasted by jobbing to teams like Los Matadores. The gimmick is awful and it's apparent people are souring on them already. Nothing to see here. *1/2.

I just feel burnt out, the tag title match was a great opener and Punk vs Ryback exceeded my expectations (Still not great) and the visual of Punk demolishing Heyman on top of the Cell was really cool, but nothing else stood out on the card, Cena's match with Del Rio built to a solid ending but the commentary was hilariously over the top and the bulk of the match was sluggish.

The Bryan vs Orton finish was just garbage, not only was it the wrong finish in my view but it was also badly executed and for the second PPV in a row spoiled what was becoming a very good match between two excellent workers.

Heyman made the best of a bad situation when that scaffold operator seemed to have no clue how to operate the damn thing. Loved his promo while he was going up to the top of the cage. I don't like the fact that Punk has had to, once again, revert to heelish tactics in order to win. IMO, it makes him look weak. But that's just me.

What an opening video. Shit yea. One of the best ones in recent memory.

The current Goldust-Rhodes mash-up theme is fuckin trash. Sure itll improve. Pretty goddamn badass match.

Miz gettinng his ass whipped by everyone. As good a segment as any.EDIT: shit, pressed the send button by accident. In the process of adding more. lulz

^^^ nevermind, no im not, thanks to the beloved post editing time limit rule. Anyways, back into it....

Great Khali involved in something. Fast Forward.

Dolph Ziggles and Kaitlyn....clearly about the same position on the card these days.

LOL @ Ambrose clearly getting frustrated with Big E two minutes into their match "TURN ME AROUND!!"...On second though, maybe Ambrose is just awful, since I clearly heard him call out at least 5 spots, and he was ref watching during every near fall.

Clever way to fuck us out of getting hat we paid to see, far as Heyman and Punk go. HIAC in general needs an overhaul.....I am thinking having weapons pre-positioned, sorta like the tetra-dome of terror threat, or whatever the fuck stupid name TNA calls that. Kendo sticks, chairs, chains, tables. all fastened to the cage/ set up in the corners of it. True hell. Sure, people get them anyways, but itll add to the atmosphere of the match.

HELLS YEAA, nothing gets me more pumped up in the middle of a wrestling show than hearing about nice ladies dying from breast cancer. Super fuckin cool.

AJ retains, thank fuck. Couldn't tell you about the match, fast forwarded to the last minute.

Pretty decent match out of Dan Bryan and Orton. HBK heel turn is sort yet another chicken shit finish, but at least someone fucking won.

decent enough show, a step up from recent ones.
