Hardy's Inner Monolouges

Getting Noticed By Management
I coulcn't fond a thread about this, if I missed one, I apoligize..

I reall like that TNA useal a shakey camera peaking the slightly open doors for certain backstage segments.. I mean I f i plotting too assult someone, I would make sure there was no camera 2 feet away...

But as good as that is.... WTF is up with us being able to hear Jeff Hardys thoughts?!?! That is like the worst thing I have ever seen... oh yea and he walks in slomotion... That makes even less sence..

So what are yout thought, and maybe I missed it, but do the annoucers ever aknowlage that we can hear his toughts?

This was what I said when Hardy did it for the first time:

And while I'm here, another segment I hated was the one where we were hearing Hardy's thoughts. Super lame and I bet it was Hardy's idea. Hardy is not some supernatural character like Taker, Kane, or Abyss. It it were them I'd still hate it, but not as much. Yeah, didn't like that at all.

And yeah I still hate them now. It's the crap Hardy comes out with as well during these segments. What he says, or "thinks" is just such crap. "James Storm drinks too much. I don't know if he's a cowboy....or an outlaw" :lmao: I admit I laugh at these segments, but I'm pretty sure that is not the desired reaction from Hardy or creative..

Aries did acknowledge the inner thoughts and even mocked them himself by closing his eyes and then saying "Did you hear anything? I guess my thoughts aren't on the same wavelength." I laughed out loud and thought that would be the end of it for Hardy but alas they have carried on.

Worst one had to be during Roode and Aries' heel vs heel match. It happened DURING the match! Time suddenly slowed down. Awful.

I'll say it... worse thing since your grammar.

But, I'm ok with any idea that is creative and new. It may not be a homerun, but without taking chances, nothing interesting can ever emerge.

One criticism of the WWE is the stale and systemactic production. It's so finely tuned, that predictability is unavoidable. We all know when commercial breaks are coming. Wrestler A, thrown out of the ring by Wrestler B mid-match.... time to switch to football.

They're weird, hardy's weird, it makes sense.

The thing is people hate them because it's Hardy talking to himself. Hardy has never been a good promo guy, but this seems to be slightly better for him because he sounds more comfortable doing this (as opposed to talking on the mic where he sounds like a novice drama student)

And let's be honest a change from the norm is always interesting. It may not work 100% of the time but you have to try some things to see what works and what doesn't.

It's so bad. They're so unrealistic it's incredible. And the stuff he thinks is ridiculous. I like Hardy, I actually do but these inner monologues HAVE to stop. Just look at it like this a casual fan flicks by Spike TV and sees Jeff Hardy. They'll stop to watch. If they hear this shit they'll laugh, fob it off and switch to something else. It's embarrassing.

Yeah I really hate these too. Somebody mentioned that one happened durring the Aries and Roode match, that was just ridiculous. I mean I understand that TNA is taking a more theatric role with it's production but this is a little too crazy for me. I'm not saying "oh this is dumb because it's unrealistic!" because wrestling today is passed realism. My issue is more when things aren't plausible.

We've seen dumber angles.

Man, these inner monolouges are just awful.
It's just because Hardy wants it his way or he's out. What a ridiculous waste of time.
DURING A MATCH TOO? Pffft. Amazing. Really is amazing what TNA will do just to keep someone. Hardy knows he has TNA wrapped around his finger.
Sorry for all the Hardy fans, but the sooner he returns to WWE for one last run, the better.

There was a spam thread made about this topic, so I will add what I said then...

I really think it's kinda corny, but...

It serves the same purpose as the pre-recorded videos that would play on the "Dixie-tron" of Jeff spouting dark gibberish during his "anti-christ phase".

Essentially its a way to advance Jeff's enigmatic character by giving him some speaking time to just be wierd without, you know- actually having to rely on him to cut a coherent promo in front of a live crowd.

and I also referenced it in my Impact review a couple weeks ago referring to the cut to Hardy's thoughts as they broke to commercial during the Roode/Aries main event...

The strangest thing about the match was the cut to Hardy in the crowd for this week's "Jeff's-inner-monologue" which felt really out of place while a match was happening. I guess as long as we don't start hearing his thoughts during his own matches its tolerable, but when that happens this will have gone much too far.

I still stand behind both those statements.

What, they are still doing those?? Good god. I guess I've fluked into not seeing that part of Impact for the past few weeks.

Anyway, those internal monologues are, bar none, the worst thing I have ever seen in pro-wrestling. It's so stupid it's beyond comprehension. Internal monologues in general are just awful, and even in comic books "thought balloons" are generally looked down on as a crutch for bad writers and/or artists. In pro-wrestling (or any visual medium) it makes even less sense than in a comic or a novel; actors are supposed to 'act' to convey thought and emotion. Also, given the genre and context of the show (we're talking about a fictional sport here, essentially an action show), this sort of thing simply isn't done, and with good reason; it's melodramatic and lame and is going to make zero sense to the target audience.

Another problem is that inner monologues are an intimate way of communicating with the audience designed to clearly establish a character as THE main protagonist whom the audience should identify with. Yet, Hardy is not the only protagonist, and his story is not the only story occurring. Why should he be getting this special connection with the audience vs, say, James Storm? If it wasn't so overtly stupid, I'd say it's unfairly biasing the audience towards Jeff Hardy's vs other protagonists in lieu of Hardy not being able to do so through his own merits as a storyteller. It makes the rest of the roster seem like bit players in Jeff Hardy's story, which is obnoxious to say the least (particularly if, like me, you hate that emo jackass). If a show has numerous protagonists, even if I don't like the featured player I may still like the others enough to justify watching the show, as I'm not forced to identify with or care about the featured character to do so (ie: Game of Thrones). Whereas, if a show features one clear main character who I despise, and the rest of the cast are just secondary supporting characters, I will not watch that show, as the context of the show is always going to be through THE protagonists perspective.

Obviously, Hardy's stupid monologues aren't a huge part of Impact (like I said, I was fortunate enough to miss them for weeks at a time), and I'm not saying TNA's product is bad just because of them (actually, if you're fortunate enough to miss them, it's a pretty good show right now). But, if I was a first time viewer and I caught one of those segments, I'd turn off the show and never tune in again.

If there is anything clear, its that Jeff gets to do whatever the hell he wants in TNA. Whether its wear the stupid facepaint, focus on his god awful music, get high for the main event of a match...he can do whatever he wants. So he's going to. Get used to it.

Yes he's obviously allowed to do that... That's why it got him an on air burial the following week on television and months on the sideline until he proved that he had gotten himself clean.

But good for you, keep trolling hard buddy. ;)

Aries did acknowledge the inner thoughts and even mocked them himself by closing his eyes and then saying "Did you hear anything? I guess my thoughts aren't on the same wavelength."

:lmao: I love it. I might have seen it when he said that but didn't know what he was referencing at the time, as I sometimes watch the episodes out of order or skip parts. I have seen, I think, two of his monologues. I remember being confused when it happened during Aries/Roode's match. I have to admit, if they did it during his own match it would be hilarious to me. I also find them unintentionally funny, but at the same time, I think there's something to the idea that it helps him being able to give a promo without giving a promo, a traditional one, anyway. Even if I don't always like the results, I do like the different things they try. I remember reading a complaints thread about how they do the camera work/backstage promo for WWE, that the camera is right there when they're supposed to be saying/doing something private, and at the end they have the person stare at something and it pans off. I had forgotten that they do that. LOL

And why bring up about him being high again? That was a long time ago and he paid for it, and obviously people won't forget it. Whenever someone brings that up it makes me think they haven't watched in a long time but they just latched onto the topic to berate him. Haven't been a Hardy fan since The Hardy Boyz and Lita, but still. He's made a complete character and that new style of promo is part of it. As a writer, I can see its merit, because I always get into the head of my character in order for people to understand them, especially if their actions are contrary to their thoughts, BUT they shouldn't do it during matches, though. No bueno. It would be random if they had a monologue for Aries talking to Hardy's monologue. That too would be hilarious. Or ONE short segment where they did it for everyone and their thoughts were totally unrelated. Stupid, but potentially amusing.

So basically what you morons are saying is that Jeff Hardy can't cut a promo his own way? I could've sworn wanted characters that were extensions of themselves on TV. I guess people around here are surprisingly out of loop then. Jeff Hardy's built his entire career on being weird. Shocker, he's doing something weird.

I am a Hardy fan because i loved his tag team work as a kid. I was about eight during when him and Matt were doing awesome things with Edge&Christian, the Dudleys, Gangrel, etc.

New ideas are great and I love that TNA tries them out, but if it sucks, drop it. Sadly, most of their innovative stuff (i.e. storylines) tends to suck.

I think they really messed up the Hardy heel turn, since someone mentioned that. The weird promos were decent, but they could have made Hardy seem way creepier. Literally...a crazy, deranged, unpredictable man wreaking havoc on the roster. Should've had him sneaking up and ambushing wrestlers, doing odd things to win matches (throw the green mist out there for one match, making a mandible claw out of those weird arm things he wears). Have him injure someone in a weird, lunatic manner in a match...Hardy caters to the Cena crowd kind of as a star, but based on just how WEIRD he actually is as a person, he could actually pull off a really good heel, IMO. Think about creepy heels...the unpredictable factor plays a significant part in some and Hardy can play that one up well.

I think it would have been a LOT easier to run promos with Hardy as this character, as silence plays more into the mystery of that sort of heel character. Tying him to Immortal was a mistake IMO. Could have had him then turn on Immortal and play a crazy solo tweener.

As you can see, I've given this topic plenty of thought. I hate flat characters and Jeff Hardy is pretty flat at this point.

I'm not going to try to turn this into a Jeff on drugs conversation but the general point I'm trying to make is he gets to do whatever he wants in TNA. Maybe its because hes a draw, maybe he sells merchandise, I don't know. But 99% of the stuff I've seen him do lately is just beyond ridiculous, in terms of promo work.
