A text conversation between my friend and her boyfriend.

Him: Can I ask you a hypothetical question?
Her: Sure
Him: When we were talking today and you said you don't think I'd cheat, just get bored and leave you, it just made me think about what would happen if we did ever split up *awful saying it * but would we stay friends? I love you so much mostly because you're my best girl mate and we get along so amazingly, I just wouldn't want to lose that if we stoploving each other or anything.

Is this his way of saying he doesn't want to be with her, or is he right in saying hypothetical?
