Just as the title says. The questions is who do you thing is better? The characters Vince created or the real people?

I believe they should be real they both are not able to show their true potential due to the characters. Plus I would love to see the brothers fight over Cody's attitude.

I agree, Cody's additude has been in question for quite some time.

I think both gimmick have made both wrestlers more intesting. Goldust was a brilliant character 13 years ago and it still serves a purpose to this day. Dustin Runnels was a fine performer, but nothing special, at least he'll forever have cult appeal now.

The Hurricane has always been shit, but at least he's maintained the same level of shit for the past 8 years. Gregory Helms was alright, when he was filling TV time on Smackdown, but so were Deuce & Domino in that respect.

Explain "shit". Is shit cutting good promos, putting on great matches (with "suprise" upsets), and getting a very nice pop. I don't think so. Unless I am confused with your meaning of "shit" then you must have never even watched Hurricane. As far as Goldust, I haven't seen his Dustin Runnels character, but Goldust has been a decent midcarder for many years. Oh, I like Hurricane better than Helms.

Hmmm, now this is an interesting thread. Here are my thoughts.

Gregory Helms and Hurricane are both great characters. Helms was great when he was heel and had the Cruiserweight Championship for what seemed like forever. Hurricane is also a great character, I find him to be the more entertaining gimmick. Helms has had success before as Hurricane and I think that will continue because he might get a shot at the ECW title in the future, or a midcard title if he gets moved to Raw/Smackdown. I give Hurricane my vote here.

Dustin Rhodes and Golddust, however, is a far easier choice. Golddust is an interesting, unique character that will never be replicated. Dustin Rhodes as himself is.... Dustin Rhodes. I prefer him as Golddust, easily.

Both of these two guys are better off as their gimmick characters rather than as "themselves" because they have had more success than they did wrestling as themselves.

I would love to see a fued between Cody and Goldust they could use this as a way to transform Goldust into Dustin Rhodes maybe with Dusty getting involved in this.

I have to say that the characters Vince gave these guys are far more memorable, and far more exciting, than their original personalities ever could be.

Without the gold paint, and the creepy music, and the creepy mannerisms, Dustin Rhodes would just be...Dustin Rhodes. He would be the son of one of the best performers ever, a big goofy-looking good-ole' boy who would be forever compared to his daddy. See, WCW tried to make him legitimate by just letting him be himself. It didn't work. So Vince and the creative team saw fit to change him up and it worked for the better. Dustin Rhodes will forever be the black sheep of the Rhodes family, simply because he was Goldust.

Gregory Helms had moderate success as himself in WCW, with some solid reigns as the Cruiserweight champ and such. When he came to WWE during the Invasion angle, he was as bland as you could be, in a company with some electric performers (The Rock, Stone Cold, Jericho, etc.). So he dropped the Cruiserweight belt to Billy Kidman. And he was going nowhere...until Austin spotted his Green Lantern tattoo. And history was made. Years down the road, they tried letting him be himself again and even gave him the Cruiserweight belt to hold on to forever. While I personally thought he had a good character, it never caught on with the audience I think.

So in all, Rhodes and Helms are to be remembered, in the annals of wrestling history, as their outlandish characters and not as themselves. It is just a stigma they will forever be stuck with, but I'm pretty sure they don't mind as long as they are making the big bucks.

Both Helms and Rhodes were very generic characters. Rhodes had a few good matches, but so did Goldust. The fact of the matter is this, he is a man that debuted in the WWF before The Undertaker, and he is still seen as relevant and useful. If he had stayed as plain ol' Dustin Rhodes, I doubt he'd have made it this far at all. Goldust is an entertaining character, that he has reinvented a number of times.

Gregory Helms was so generic, it's untrue. The only thing that is interesting is that he used to be The Hurricane. The Hurricane on the other hand is good for a few cheap laughs, and he breaks up the standard look of wrestlers. In both instances, the characters are better than the men on their own.

The characters, hands down. Without their characters they would simply play themselves and be unentertaining, or at least not as good as they could be. The fact that Goldust is STILL over despite being with the company for a very long time says something about the power of the character in wrestling. Characters make thigns interesting and fun, and break up the monotony of all the Tyler Reks' and Paul Burchills of the world.

Plus, I'm a major comic book fan, and Helms as a superhero appeals to that side of me. I watch wrestling to escape from the real world, and I love seeing a superhero and a Bizarre Actor sprinkled in with my wrestlers.

I always dug Dustin as the rugged son of a son of a plumber, I think Goldust is pretty irrelevant at this point and we are in dire need of a 'tough cowboy' type..I mean if Goldust is gonna go the way of the dinosaur what better way to send off the a-sexual 'bizarre one' then by turning him into a Texas Bad Ass!?

Helms is alright, he's gonna be in some shit over this drunken party night thing, cause I'm sure as hell that Jericho isn't gonna be reprimanded half of what Helms will be.

I think Goldust is better for Dustin, but itd be nice to see Dustin go against Cody.

As for Helms, I think his hurricane gimmic is great for the pg era right now. But when hes Gregory Helms as a heel, He's one of the few in wwe that can get under your skin. I remember when he was the Crusierweight Champ. I was just beggin each week for someone to beat him because he was just that good.

well i enjoy watching both the hurricane and goldust character..but IMO
for hurricane i think he can grow more as GREGORY HELMS i dont see him growing as a superhero but i can see gregory helms being a possible US CHAMP maybe even teaming him with matt hardy to hold the tag titles

as for goldust ive always loved that character and i think he can always stay mid card and not be buried no matter how much they try

Goldust needs to retire the gimmick and come out as Dustin Rhodes. Either team with his brother as a heel and both have new wardrobes, saying that they are tired of being pused to the side and bothe are better wrestlers than the most of the roster, or have him feud with his lil brother.

Hurricane Helms as a wrestling character is more interesting than Gregory Helms is. (It might be because I share his love of the Green Lantern, I suppose)

However, I much preferred Dustin Rhodes to Goldie. For some reason, when Dustin used to wrestle in jeans and a t-shirt, it fit him. It seemed natural. I always saw the Golddust character as a crutch. It was so out there, Dustin really couldn't do anything with it. There was no room for the character to grow. What can you really do with a guy wearing a gold body suit and makeup, who supposedly was a straight but acts gay to psyche out his opponent movie star? Its the same kind of deal with the Val Venis character. Once established, where can you possibly go with it?

Yes, I realize that my reasoning behind preferring Dustin Rhodes to Golddust could easily be applied to Gregory Helms/Hurricane Helms, and expose a huge contradiction in my arguments, based on where you can possibly take a superhero character. I simply don't care. I never said it had to make sense. Yeah, the contradiction is glaring, but, it is what it is. lol

Im going to say that I enjoy The Hurricane alot more than Gregory Helms. When Hurricane first came out as that character he was a little annoying but had silly catchphrases like, Whats up wit Dat? and Stand back, There is a Hurricane coming through. Things that would just make you laugh or roll your eyes, but he got our attention. He had character. He cut good promos. And he suprised the heck out of me by pinning The Rock. And even the time he had his Super Hero in Training(shit) tag team with Rosey it made for good comedy.Better then the Hornswoggle stuff we get now days. Gregory Helms made for a decent cruiserweight champion. He just never had any dimension to that character. Never caught my attention and im sure not many others.

Its hard for me to choose Goldust or Dustin Rhodes. I like the Goldust character, but I also like the goldust character 12 years ago. I hated when Goldust got electrocuted and had tourettes. It was funny at first, but it destroyed the character. When I think of Goldust I like to remember things like Marlena,Backlot Brawl with Piper at WM12 and even some of the silly moments with Luna VaChon. Since Goldust came back I was actually hoping he would drop the gimmick I once enjoyed for something else. I could see him as a badass redneck because thats just how he comes accross. When he tried being himself in WCW thats what he reminded me of. Why not try it again and do something with Cody Rhodes. Its worth a try to be taken more seriously. But that may not be what WWE wants.
