GM for the night and other concepts that just do not work anymore

whoopin' ass

Championship Contender
Super Smackdown tonight is going to have a battle royal and the winner gets to be the GM for the night the following week. realistically, this would be massive. i mean, imagine if someone like Del Rio won, booked himself into a match for the title and then put so many stipulations to the match that there is no way Sheamus could win. or imagine if Daniel Bryan won, stripped Punk of the title and then fired him. this could be used to make some massive changes in wwe from a storyline point of view if it was used properly. however, this is not going to happen. as we have seen in the past, when a superstar gets the chance to add any stipulation they want to a match, it always comes across as weak(why would they not make it a submissions match but make the champ wrestle with both arms tied behind his back? pretty much a guaranteed win there). are some of these concepts, such as this and the loser gets fired matches, just no longer working or is it just me?

That is a very valid point there. I know if I were a heel and I somehow got put in a position of power in the company I'd do stuff like that too.

As for loser gets fired matches they've pretty much been rendered meaningless over the years. John Cena got fired a couple times and he still showed up as if nothing happened. Same with Stone Cold Steve Austin. The fans know WWE isn't going to really fire somebody who brings the company that much money. If they did that they might as well just wrap him up put a bow on his head and send him to TNA or ROH. You know Vinny Mac ain't gonna let that one happen. I think the only way John Cena would get fired is if he was practicing Satanic rituals in Vince's office while eating a baby. Even then half the audience would be offering him ketchup.

Since we know know Ryder won the battle royal, let's expand the question a little. do we care about these things after someone like him wins? no offense but Ryder winning is a surprise but not the kind of surprise that is going to get people interested in next week's show. think of it this way - when wwe says "a former King of the Ring", who do you think of? are you more likely to think Austin or Billy Gunn? right now, Santino is in the Smackdown Money in the Bank match. does anyone expect him to win and if he did, would it really surprise people in a good way? even if it is a good concept, using people like him brings it down. when it is a lame concept, like GM for the night, giving it to someone like Ryder makes it almost meaningless. i don't know about you but if i were Ryder, first thing i would do is come out and fire Kane for what he did to me. is that going to happen? not a chance. wasted opportunity.

I did not like Ryder winning the battle royal seemed like a waste but when you saw it was just him and Kane you just knew he was going to win. Also the loser gets fired bit is way over used on cena. Remember Juan cena.

Have to agree- I remember when loser got fired was really interesting and mean't something. Also remember Christopher Daniels? How many times has he lost a loser gets fired match?
