Couldn't your friend just have called in sick, I imagine if I spent $900 on tickets for something and my boss told me I couldn't have that day off I would just say fuck it, wait till the day of the show and call in... or depending on the job just quit

From what he told me, he told them about going to the event beforehand and requested the day off but they said they couldn't guarantee that he would get it only because they're short staffed. Like an idiot, he went and bought tickets anyway for fear they would sell out.
