Foreign investment in the Premier League and the future.

Championship Contender
More and more clubs in the English Premier League are being taken over by mega-rich foreigners, the most famous being Roman Abromovich. Recently, Manchester City were taken over by a mega-mega-mega rich Arab investment group, being worth anywhere from £600b to £900b.

Now with the current trend, eventually all the clubs will be taken over by richer and richer groups/people, meaning quite a lot of players will just move for the money. Robinho is earning £160,000 a week, the most a player has ever earnt in history and City are talking about giving Ronaldo over £350,000 a week if he joins. With this sort of money, no wonder world class players like Robinho are chosing to join a relative average team in Manchester City. Ronaldinho is their new owners favourite player and he said he'd give him £400,000 a week or more. That's just insane.

My main point is, do you agree that in a few years time, every club will be taken over by uber-rich people/groups, and players will be earning the sort of money that they never even dreamed about?

Do you see the clubs being fought over by the mega-rich, spending money which will effectively mean the clubs without a rich owner, will fail to do well?

In my opinion, yes because it's too obvious that every club is looking for a rich investor. They'll sell to the most rich, and buy their way to the top. It's only a matter of time. Wage caps are needed now to stop the money grabbing players going to the club which pays the most. I'm just glad United already have a rich owner, so we're not in any trouble. But already there is talk of United being taken over by even richer people, which i'm not sure how to respond to.

Anyway, voice your opinions..

I think it's a good thing personally, most people say that the money in football is a bad thing, but I think it makes the competition more exciting. Man City look dead on to break into the top four this season or next, which from a neutral's standpoint can only be a good thing as it adds more excitement and unpredictability to the Premiership, think about it, we now 5 big teams going for 4 top spots, which makes it more unpredictable. The more clubs that follow this trend the more exciting and unpredictable the Premiership will become. Obviously, if you're a Man Utd or Chelsea fan then it's time to get worried, but for everyone else it's fantastic.

I somewhere between thinking it will be a good and a bad thing. If the owners are like Randy Lerner at Aston Villa then I have no problem if every Premiership team gets new ownership. What I have a problem with is that transfer fees will become ridiculous. Look at Chelsea since Abramovich bought them, they spent about £300 million which is just stupid. That in turn could make fans stay away from the matches which will lose the clubs a ton of money. My biggest concern about the ever growing investment in the Premiership is that teams that come up from the Championship have almost no chance of surviving unless they can find an investor

It will all in tears eventually. The fans will get fed up with the rising ticket prices and not attend games. It will be another Leeds but on a massive scale. Im looking forward to it to be honest. EPL football is so plastic. No soul.

You just highlighted the exact reason I don't like the EPL as opposed to football in Portugal.

Sure, if you're a true fan you'll pay the little increase each year. But soon that will get too much. Already, I think the season ticket prices for teams are ridiculously high. I mean, I get a Rugby League season ticket for £60. And that's 13 games, plus free away games. So I get 23 games for that price. An incredibly good price if you ask me.

But football in England is definitely more 'plastic'. I mean, generally the enthusiasm in teams comes from the foreign players anyway. Money shouldn't play a big part in any sport. but money threatens to overwhelm this game, and it will all come crashing down.

At last we agree with something :D. I dont ike English football myself even so Im a long suffering Leeds fan. I also support Juventus and I like European football alot more than the 'pace, power and long ball' approach of the EPL. Give me Inter vs Siena over Tottenham vs Aston Villa anyday of the week.

If you don't like the money being invested into the top teams then support a non league team. If Stoke got taken over by some oil rich Arabs I wouldn't give a shit. But if I did I'd simply stop paying over the odds for season tickets and support Leek Town. They play the same, cost less and are close to home.
