Favourite Movie Soundtrack

There have been a lot of movies out there with a collection of killer songs, the perfect encapsulation of a film's storyline and mood & a cohesive album that stands on its own.

What's your favourite movie soundtrack?

The Godfather Soundtrack is the first that comes to mind. It creates great atmosphere throughout the film.

The soundtrack to "Walk the Line". I thought Joaquin Phoenix did great cover renditions of Cash's songs for the movie. Cocaine Blues is a personal favorite from the soundtrack.

I've got two:

1: O Brother, Where Art Thou?

This one has a great country style soundtrack, featuring some great, classic hymns and other various songs from the films period (1937). Who could forget the Soggy Bottom Boys, which of course was at the very core of the films plot. Great stuff:

2: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

This film is a classic, but it may not be as great as it is, if not for Ennio Morricone. The legendary composer brought together some of his best music, crafting some truly amazing music. There are so many great moments in this film, and they're only emphasised further by the quality of Morricone's score. Just one of many amazing examples:

Ohhhh man how did I forget about The Good The Bad And The Ugly! That along with many other classic Westerns staring Eastwood and composed by Morricone. The Ecstasy Of Gold is a song I often listen to, both Morricone's version and Metallica's.

I automatically want to exclude the Star Wars Trilogy, because I cannot possibly be unbiased about the subject, I am too much of a Star Wars nerd to even pretend to be neutral. John William's score is brilliant...

But, for non-Star Wars soundtracks, its gotta be Conan the Barbarian, scored by Basil Poledouris. The music matches the mood of the film perfectly, and the intro is downright majestic.

I would also highly recommend the soundtrack to The Hunt for Red October, also by Basil Poledouris.

Star Wars. Easily one of the best soundtracks ever composed, you could almost watch the movie without dialogue and still get everything just by the sound track and sound effects.

Also, 2001: A Space Odyssey gets a mention because of how amazingly well used it is. Where Star Wars could tell the story without dialogue, 2001 actually DOES tell much of its story through just the soundtrack. I'm not a huge fan of the film, but it's one hell of a soundtrack.

My favorite movie soundtrack is Atonement. I have two reasons why I love this soundtrack so much.

1. One of the major plot points in the film is this note that had been typed on a typewriter and that kind of sets the whole story in motion. The composer, Dario Marianelli uses that "image" (it's actually a sound) of the typewriter and it's effect on the story in the songs by using the typewriter as an instrument. I thought this was a really cool thing because it not only sounded great, but it tied the music to the story.

2. There's this little melody of like 5 or 6 notes that Marianelli works into every single one of the songs in the film and it makes it feel more like a continuation of one song to the next rather than just 15 separate songs, it feels like one song that is continuously changing. Some people find that a bit obnoxious, but personally I feel like it gave the soundtrack a sense of unity.

A couple of my favorite tracks:

Pirates of the Caribbean. The main theme is easily recognizable and capture the spirit of the anti-establishment and swashbuckling life of the pirates. Fights in the movies were made better by the score instead of the music distracting from the action in the movie. In my opinion any movie soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer is worthy to be on the list but the Pirates one was the first to come to mind.

My all-time favorite movie soundtrack is soundtrack to the movie "Blow." It's an absolute classic. Listened to it in college while drunk and high, 7 times in a row, start to finish. Really good stuff.

My favorite movie soundtrack is Top Gun. My biggest issue with movie soundtracks is that they usually do not include the songs on the soundtrack in the actual movie other than a lead single used in the credits and then sometimes a couple of symphonic scores from the film make it onto the soundtrack too. Top Gun is one of the few that actually sees every single track on its sondtrack appearing in the film somewhere. The music is great on its own too. Those are the two reasons why it is my favorite movie soundtrack. Honorable mention goes to The Scorpion King, every track on it is pretty awesome too.

I found the sound tracks of the movie fast five is nice and I just love to listen to that movie sound tracks very much. Besides that I like to listen to the sound tracks of the various famous bands too,.

For me it's hard to top this movie or this soundtrack, it's an amazing film all around and the music is so pure and beautiful it gives me goosebumps, it's Braveheart
Every song on the album is just amazing, I believe that alot of the power that Braveheart has as a movie comes from it's powerful soundtrack and really makes you open your heart to the movie, and even makes you feel more vulnerable. Absolutely brilliant music, I wish more soundtracks could have the same passion and beauty that Braveheart does.

Before getting to my favourite, one film I watched again recently and was really impressed with it's soundtrack was V for Vendetta. From the classical music to "Cry Me a River" when V and Portman are dancing in his lair, it has a lot of good music throughout.

My favourite is probably The Fountain. The pairing of Arynofsky and Mansell has become the new Leone/Morriconne pairing for me as Mansell's scores always add an extra level of feeling to the films. The final two songs are my favourite, but the build up to the songs in the first place is great.

If we go by soundtrack which is suppose to be pre recorded songs added to the movie then he's a few (I can't decide on one).

- "Trainspotting"
- "Adventureland"
- "Garden State"
- "Starter For 10"
- "The Beach"
- "Into The Wild"
- Lost In Translation"

If we go by original score then...

- "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"
- "Atonement"
- "Lawrence of Arabia"
- "The Fountain"
- "The Social Network"
- "Babel"
- "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

For me it was hands down 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Every piece of music in that movie fit PERFECTLY with what was happening. Outside of the classic theme song (which now forever known as Ric Flairs theme song) the blue danube waltz was the best possible choice for a song to carry that movie. Every time I heard that song play I was enthralled with what was going on whether it was a pen floating on air or a stewardess walking in a circle 180 degrees to walk into another room, the song just helped put everything together in an unbelievable way.

The other one I loved was already mentioned in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, you know a soundtrack is awesome when Metallica uses it to open all their concerts.
