Favorite Movie of 1992

No Count Pup

Just call on me brother
Here were my two favorite movies of 1992:

Sister Act

An instant classic from the get go. Whoopi Goldberg as a nun was must-see. But the supporting characters made the film memorable. Harvey Keitel was the cold-blooded villain on the hunt for Dolores Van Cartier. Bill Nunn played the savvy police lieutenant who masterminded the convent hideout plan. The venerable Maggie Smith was the traditionalist Mother Superior who had to keep Whoopi Goldberg's "Sister Mary Clarence" in check. The transformation of the choir from a band of disjointed monotones to the hippest gospel choir in the city was highly entertaining. The film borders on irreverence while still respecting the religious sensibilities of its potential viewers.

My Cousin Vinny

Joe Pesci played both sides of the law in 1992. In Home Alone 2: Lost in New York he took on a supporting role as a buffoonish escaped convict alongside Daniel Stern. In My Cousin Vinny Pesci starred as an attorney who defends his nephew in a murder trial. Both films were hits, but Joe Pesci was the anchor in Vinny. His unique delivery and his knack for argumentation make Vinny the most entertaining attorney I've ever seen (James Spader trails just behind but not by much). While Tom Cruise had that famous courtroom scene with Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, Joe Pesci's cross-examinations were second to none and part of what makes My Cousin Vinny one of my two favorite films of 1992.

White Men Can't Jump

Not only is it my favourite movie of 1992, but it's my favourite movie of all time. I grew up watching this as a kid and I can't count how many times. Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes have great chemistry together and the trash talking/jokes in this movie are absolutely hilarious. The "Yo Momma" jokes made in this film were the inspiration for that Yo Momma show hosted by Wilmer Valderama 10 years ago. The Basketball scenes are excellent and Rosie Perez, Tyra Ferell, Kadeem Hardison, and Clyk Cozart are a good supporting cast. The opening scene with Billy and Sidney's "Best out of five/top of the key" game (wish I could find a video of it) is the funniest opening scene I've ever watched along with Full Metal Jacket's opening scene. Film also has a great soundtrack consisting of R&B and Hip-Hop music.

Alien 3

Alien 3 is an underrated film. I know the movie receives a bad rap, because it's not as good as Alien or Aliens (some people have the audacity to say it's just as bad or worse than Resurrection), but Alien 3 could've been a sensible and satisfying finale for the Alien series. And when you stop and think about it, Alien 3 should've completed one of the best examples of cohesive storytelling we've ever seen.

Alien was all about claustrophobia and atmospheric tension, with one Xenomorph stalking Ripley. Cameron took everything to the next level with an Alien queen and an army of Xenomorphs in Aliens to produce the extravagant blockbuster, with Ripley making the transition from a resourceful survivor to a fearless action heroine.

Alien 3 was a darker film, with a deary and desolate atmosphere. David Fincher doesn't receive enough credit for his work behind the camera, and I know she received the Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her work in Aliens, but Sigourney Weaver was amazing in Alien 3.

The frustration, the anger, and Ripley's desperation. You could feel everything, because Ripley finally reached a point, where she couldn't handle it anymore. One scene that sticks out is Ripley basically begging Dillon for a mercy killing, and the other is Weaver's body language and facial expressions, when she finds out an Xenomorph is growing inside of her.

Ripley willingly falling into the inferno and sacrificing herself, while restraining the Xenomorph to end it all is a great memorable image/scene, and it's a fitting send-off for Ripley, but of course they ruined everything with Resurrection.

Candyman

A memorable film for me, because Candyman scared the shit out of me as a kid to the point, where I stopped watching it for the first time (not in theaters, a few years after that).

Tony Todd is genuinely creepy as Candyman, and Candyman is one of my favorite horror films, because they did a wonderful job of building up his mystique before he meets Helen face to face for the first time with an excellent an urban legend (one the best in any type of film). You believe Candyman is this malevolent and seemingly unstoppable boogeyman, so his presence has more of a meaningful impact, when he corners Helen for the first time.

Virgina Madsen deserves credit for a top notch performance, and Candyman takes a different approach to gory stuff. The movie doesn't simply rely on taking the easy way out for gore and blood with gross-out reactions. Instead, Candyman takes a more thought-provoking approach with the aftermath of Bernadette's murder as a good example, because you're wondering how horrible the massacre could've been.
