Elder Scrolls V

The Raven's Epitaph

Getting Noticed By Management

I don't know about anybody else, but I am marking out so badly for this news. How long have fans of this series waited for the 5th installment?

Jesus Christ, I didn't watch the 2010 VGA but I heard about Bethesda's announcing of a new game and as soon as I heard, I marked the fuck out.

The trailer says 11.11.11 as the release date. Fuck TNA and their completely obligitory 10.10.10 bullshit, THE ELDER SCROLLS FIVE is being released on 11.11.11 and I'm pre-ordering that motherfucker as soon as it's available for it.

What do you fans of TES think?
Are you excited?
Are you getting this game?
Did you jizz..?.....too far?

Wow, it's about time. Elder Scrolls Oblivion is one of the most underappreciated games on the PS3, it's a game that can be played for weeks and not get close to finishing...but it's still geting up there in age. FINALLY we get a fifth installment. I am so fucking pumped for this now.

The only problem is I'm finding out about it now, instead of six months from now. That is going to make the wait nearly intolerable. I so hope this game meets my incredible expectations for it.

I completely agree Sly. It's one of the best games I've played, and it's one of the only games that I come back to keep playing over and over again. There's so much freedom within the game itself, that it's just impossible to become bored of.

After 3 years of waiting patiently, we've finally heard news of our long awaited 5th installment. The wait is going to be awful now that we actually know about it, but I'm sure Bethesda are going to keep plugging this shit up to the eyeballs. I can't wait to get this game.

I just hope it does indeed, meet up to expectations and was worth the wait. Knowing the past installments, and Bethseda's fine, fine work in gaming, I'm almost 110% sure that's it's going to be an epic game.

Wow this is fucking awesome. People often compare this game to Fallout but Elder Scrolls was MILES better. Elder scrolls has bosses, Fallout didn't.

Either way the trailer makes this game look awesome. The thing i have always loved about the game is that you can play the game for a month and only scratch the bare surface of it. The previous game was my favourite game of all time and it was the first game i got for PS3. I found the way the NPC's interacted with one another amazing. ure the game had it's glitches but in comparison to other Bethesda works(Fallout) it was fucking nothing. The unmarked quests in this game were also very intriguing as they made you think instead of just doing what the journal said.

Hopefully this game can take in some features from Fallout which is using speech and other abilities to help you in conversation. Perks would be another good thing to add but i fear it may make the game too much like Fallout.

Either way i'm fucking stoked for this.

I'm so excited for this release I can't sit still. I'm still playing the hell out of Oblivion and it's been nearly two years since I started. My only hope is that they make staves melee weapons instead of spell launchers.

I rarely anticipate video games anymore but this is some great news. Probably will be the first game in a few years to at least tempt me to buy it when it first comes out. I'll still wait but every time I hear about a new awesome tweak or addition it will test my inherent cheapness. Oblivion has easily been one of my favorite gaming experiences on the PS3.

This is such great news. I'm a big Oblivion fan and I was kind of worried that, given their recent focus on the Fallout series, Bethesda would wait until the next generation of consoles to release another Elder Scrolls game or simply abandon the series all together. Now, we're getting a fifth installment next year. Unreal. Let's see if Skyrim can handle my stealthy Dark Elf.

Even more exciting is that they're using a new engine. The old engine used for Oblivion and the Fallout games is aging badly, so hopefully this new one will be a bit less buggy and the characters will look less robotic. With this, Mass Effect 3, and a new Marvel vs. Capcom, 2011 is shaping up to be quite a good year for games.

My biggest hope is that melee will be improved, in look, feel and execution. While I think it was better in Elder Scrolls than in Dragon Age, I just feel like one is too limited in attacks. If you've ever played Dynasty Warriors, I love the feel of the attacks on Dynasty Warriors. And while I'm not looking for that kind of button mashing, I love the different angles of swings, and the different attacks as well.

The other thing which would be cool is to dual-wield. That's SUCH a big part of so many D&D stories, and it's a shame that dual-wielding just hasn't been done well yet.

Finally, I hope they incorporate more of Dragon Age style spellcasting. It always seemed so silly to me that you just press one button over and over to cast a spell on Elder Scrolls. Dragon Age's spellcasting I thought was very good.

I agree with pretty much all of that. I'm sure that melee will be improved; Oblivion's hand-to-hand combat was a pretty drastic improvement over Morrowind thanks to the addition of different power attacks and general smoothness. Although I doubt they'll go the route of action game a la Dynasty Warriors or even something like Devil May Cry, more variety of attacks would be nice and it could benefit from some of those influences. I'll be happy even if they just make it smoother and less erratic.

As far as spellcasting goes, I would welcome more variety of offensive magic. Granted, it's possible to create and cast a lot of different spells in Oblivion, but magic that causes pure damage is limited to mostly a fireball or lightning. Also, it's too easy to level your character casting spells, so hopefully they'll tweak the leveling system to make everything more balanced.

This is the 2nd greatest news I could've gotten related to video games. The only question I have is, is the new engine going to be better than Gamebryo or will it be complete buggy garbage? Bethesda has a habit of not testing their games enough for bugs and New Vegas was the best example of that. This game will be amazing if the engine and the game itself stay relatively bug free.

As many will know the Gamebryo formally used by Oblivion and Fallout 3 has been dying a slow death of late. On November 10th 2010 the assets of the engine were put up for sale. Such events have raised questions about Bethesda's choice of engine for TES V and the modability of any new engine that Bethesda might choose to use.

The most likely engine candidate was thought to be the id Tech5 engine that is currently being used for the upcoming RAGE game by id as well as the next Doom game. With Zenimax's (Bethesda's parent company) acquisition of id Software earlier on in the year TES V on the id Tech5 seemed like a very real possibility. Unfortunately the engine is not great for open world games and is even worse for modders due in no small part to the massive texture system the id Tech5 engine employs.

Since the announcement of TES V last night Nick Breckon has tweeted that TES V will use an all-new engine:

QUOTE
We can now confirm that the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic.

This coincides with a recent interview with Todd Howard on Eurogamer:

QUOTE
Eurogamer: Is it fair to say then that it's based on existing technology?

Todd Howard: The technology is ours and it is inspired by the technology we have. We have a lot of it. But that's our starting point - the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware - with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that.

And finally an IGN interview with Todd Howard should put the rumours to bed:

QUOTE
Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard explained in a separate interview with IGN that his game would not use id Tech 5. The studio's new engine built for its upcoming title is more beneficial to creating huge, open-world games, such as Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, while id Tech 5 is better for more contained environments.

"We decided to really reboot our technology after Fallout 3, so we had been making plans for that and started doing some things. The id thing came along later, so it's a mix of that plus the kinds of games we do are a bit bigger and more dynamic.

"Id Tech 5 is the best thing in the world at doing a very static environment that looks pretty and you're going to run through. But for the kinds of things I like to do, I like the world to be more dynamic."

While we have no details on this new engine it sounds like it has been specifically tailored for the Elder Scrolls series and games of similar ilk. We can only hope that Bethesda still love us, the modding community, enough to develop their tools with the end user in mind as well.

As it is an SDK is always at the furthest edges of a developer's mind so I wouldn't expect to hear anything about it (modding) way in to the new year and much closer to the release date. I would love Bethesda to prove me wrong though.

I realy don't know what to think of this. On the one hand the Gamebryo system was pretty shitty as if late which is what New Vegas thought us. Rage looks like a pretty awesome game but i don't know if i will adjust as easily to it. Hopefully we will get an awesome game out of this.

I played TES 4 alot i had 2 characthers level 45 and 40 and i never got bored of it and with mods even better also i heard the Region you are in Tamreial? is the biggest Region so it will be not as big.also heard a rumor that there are dragons.
i saw on a other forum people requesting...GUNS?, really, guns that is just freaking stupid i like FPS but oblivion is a medieval RPg not COD. Lastly who ever says Fast travel should be removed is a freaking idiot if you dont like don't use you dont eat... indian food or whatever but you dont want it gone but fast travel is so bad it needs to be gone? really?
HARDCORE GAMERS may argue with me but this is a game for casual and Hardcore gamers there should be a hardcore mode
i bet you start in Jail heard in alll Elder Scrolls game you start out at jail

Well here's some new updates for Skyrim:
Source: Elder Scrolls Nexus and BethBlog.com

The Creation Engine
Bethesda has created a new engine for Skyrim named the Creation Engine, which will probably turn out to be the most significant aspect, good or bad, of Skyrim's technology. GameBryo may have problems, but we don't know yet how the Creation Engine will turn out.

Little information has been released about the Creation Engine so far, but what we do know makes me optimistic. Bethesda has created the engine specifically for their games, which seems like a better idea, at least in theory, than trying to wrangle GameBryo (or any existing engine) to accomplish what is needed. SpeedTree has been replaced by a new system that allows greater artistic control over how foliage animates and reacts to the environment. Since the game takes place in Skyrim, snow is of course a necessity, and Bethesda has luckily not returned to the flawed precipitation system in earlier games (where rain and snow fell through, well, everything). Snowfall is now calculated in-game and accumulates on surfaces. The level of detail for distant objects and landscape has been improved, and dynamic lighting and shadows are now "on everything."

Wel this is very good news. The idea that they may be using the game engine that is currently being used by Rage was tempting but I just don't think that it would mesh well at all. The new engine will benefit Bethesda in the futue anyways as it will be available for use in future RPG's such as Fallout. The fact that they are putting so much work into "calculated snowfall" this just shows us that this game can be awesome.

Radiant AI
Bethesda has been talking about improving the Radiant AI system, which was somewhat restrained in Oblivion. NPCs will now have real jobs or tasks (farming, mining, etc.) instead of simple sets of actions. NPC reactions have been improved to relate more directly to the NPC's relationship with the player. One example given is "a friend would let you eat an apple in his house," which certainly sounds better than every NPC throwing a fit if you touch that inkwell sitting on their desk. These changes look like they will help the world seem more alive, which is always a good thing.

Wow that sounds awesome. One of my biggest gripes in Oblivion was that the AI were overprotective of everything. I mean why would the imperial guard chase me all over the imperial city over something as trivial a quill i took that wasn't mine but actually belonged to some wood elf? The idea that the AI will be doing jobs is also a great addition to the series. While NPC's did jobs in the last game(Basically just tending to crops), this game seems to put more detail into it and maybe things will change with jobs? I.E crops will actually grow and be harvested, trees will actually go,etc.

Radiant Story
Radiant Story seems to be the feature Bethesda is most interested in hyping, like Radiant AI for Oblivion. Radiant Story is actually a group of features all related to presenting the player with more content. First, Bethesda has created a system of random and dynamically generated quests and events. You may be asked to assassinate an NPC or find an object in a dungeon, but the conditions and objects are not predefined. The game will also attempt to send you to locations you haven't yet explored. Radiant Story also functions as another method preventing quests from becoming inaccessible. In an example given in the GameInformer article, if a merchant with quests is killed, his or her child may take over the store and offer the same quests. Of course, Bethesda warns that if you killed the merchant, the child may seek revenge.

Bethesda has also implemented an omniscient "Story Manager" which works to create dynamic events based on the player's actions. If you drop a weapon in town, an NPC might try to return it to you, or NPCs may fight over it, or maybe nothing will happen. NPCs might ask you for help, training, or a duel. NPCs you become friends with may ask for help later, or even become temporary companions. In the wilderness, you may encounter creatures being attacked by other creatures, or an NPC who directs you to a random quest.

Some of these features do sound innovative, while others just sound like improvements to existing systems such as the "random" encounters in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The Story Manager actually reminds me of Left 4 Dead's Director. We'll have to see how Radiant Story functions once Skyrim is released, since Oblivion's Radiant AI turned out to be substantially different from the pre-release information about it.

Again, all that is underlined is what I'm most excited about. Alot of that sounds fucking awesome. I certainly applaud the idea of the game helping you find new areas throughout Skyrim, especially considering that Skyrim is the biggest province of Tamriel. The feature of not losing out on quests if the quest giver is killed is another part of this game that is making it look amazing. Saying that the child will give the quest could possibly point out that children will be in this game? Personally I wouldn't mind it but it certainly was strange in Oblivion seeing no children whatsoever. Revenge is a very realistic feature also and will make me tink twice before killing a merchant for gold(:lmao:). The story manager seems like a fucking brilliant idea but could become very complicated and annoying in a quick period of time. The fact you can become friends with NPC's and have friendly battles with them is certainly a brillaint idea but like I said earlier may get annoying if it is overdone. These features seem very promising and make me love the idea this game is presenting.

Havok Behavior (Animation)
Bethesda is again returning to the Havok system. Beyond just the usual physics people usually associate with Havok, Skyrim will be using Havok's new "Behavior" system, which allows for improved and more easily designed animations. Havok Behavior can blend together various animations automatically, such as the transitions between walking, jogging, running, and jumping, or the flow between combat animations. NPCs and creatures can become stuck in spider webs and will struggle to escape. The system is also being used for Skyrim's dragons, allowing their animations appear natural instead of "mechanical" or scripted.

Havok Behavior is being applied to improve the dialog system. Instead of freezing time and focusing the camera on the NPC, time will continue to flow. You can look around during your conversation, NPCs may continue whatever they were doing (working, eating, etc.) or even move to take a seat.

Wow, it is amazing to think that an Elder SCrolls game will be getting the Havok system! It's all been said there and I personally think it sounds amazing.

GameInformer did ask Todd Howard if Havok Behavior could or would be used for player mounts such as horses or mammoths, but Todd gave a non-response. We'll have to wait and see on that subject...

From what is rumored, onsiering how big the map of Skyrim will be there apparently will be lying mounts in the game but we will have to wait and see. Personally I think flying mounts would be a pretty cool addition to the series.

At Bethesda Blog website; BethBlog. They have released 10 screenshots of the fourthcoming game that looks pretty awesome if you ask me. Here are my favourite ones nder the spoiler tags but you can see the full set Here

skeletono.jpg

Skeletons have taken a retexture and have gone from those jokes that were difficult to kill in the last game to something that are actually quite frightening.

trollg.jpg

Like the above creatures; The troll has taken a retexture and for the better.

dragonvp.jpg

Certainly the presence of that Dragon makes this game seem much more interesting.

Weapons in the game are also taking an overhaul. Reportedly Bows, daggers and staffs are being improved so you can actually skill up bows and daggers will be more effective for stealth.

Overall this game looks amazing.

It's almost here. 11.11.11 is almost upon us! I have NEVER been so pumped about a video game release as I am about Skyrim! I've been intentionally staying away previews and screenshots because I want to be surprised, but from the little that I've seen and read, THIS GAME LOOKS INCREDIBLE. Finally... DRAGONS!! I've read that the dragons are almost free-roaming and very unpredictable.... AWESOME! I'm at a loss for words regarding how much I'm looking forward to this game. I will not be able to sleep the night before. I feel like a kid again, getting so pumped up about a game. Bethesda is currently the RPG King of Videogames!!

I picked MW3 up instead of Skyrim- no discounts on release for Skyrim, but there was for MW3. Also, MW3 is probably less of a time sink as it's quick short bursts of fun as opposed to a long joined up story/quest that'll keep me hooked when I need to work. :P

I'll get Skyrim at Christmas though, heard so much good stuff about it.

Wow, folks. I've been playing Skyrim for about three days now and I can honestly say it is the greatest epic fantasy video game I have ever played. The level of depth makes Oblivion pale in comparison. I don't want to give out any spoilers, but I have already been pleasantly surprised with some of the new features and factions in this game. If you're an RPG fan, you must have this game!

Just bought it Sunday, but I've been too busy with school work to start it (work before play). That's probably a good thing, as I've heard the game is incredibly addictive. My brother tells me it's awesome, and he's only played about a day's worth. I know this game will be great, and I will lose huge chinks of time to it, but I'm willing to wait until I have the time to really get into it.
