Without a doubt the match of the year as of now is the MTIB match between CM Punk and John Cena. That match had everything. The atmosphere in that arena at the time was nothing i have ever seen before. The only other match i can compare that to is the first meeting between The Rock and Hulk Hogan. Cena vs Punk was a pure wrestling match. There were no weapons. It wasn't a spot fest for Punk. It was just a pure wrestling match between the two wrestlers. It is arguably Cena's best match and I agree. Personally i hate Cena but i give him a lot of credit for that match. Cena was great. The emotion in that match was incredible. The build up for this match was done to perfection. Because of that people want to pay the $45 to see what happens. This match was better then any match in the last 5 years. This is why this match is more deserving of this title over that poor excuse of a match between Taker and Triple H. There was no build for that match. It was horrible. The entire match was a spot fest. Big bump after big bump. Come on that's not a Wrestling match. The first meeting between Hunter and Taker at Wrestle Mania 17 was one hell of a match. This one not so much. The way i see it Triple H vs Taker was just on the card to give Mania some star power. Not that it helped considering that was the WORST Mania in history.

CM Punk vs John Cena was definitely the best match of the year. Just because HHH fights the Undertaker does NOT mean it's a classic. That match was good but not a classic.

I agree with most of the posts that it's Punk vs Cena at MITB.But if you ask me the winner is going to be Taker vs HHH at mania although Punk/Cena deserves it

I also feel that a cadidate for match of the year should be The Miz vs Morrison vs Cena Steel Cage match @ Extreme Rules. That match was all over the place and had tons of Great spots.

Anybody who says anything besides Cena/Punk is a mongoloid. Anybody who says anything TNA has done is even close is a bigger mongoloid. Cena/Punk is not only the best match this year, but it's the best match in at least the past 5 years outside of the Taker/HBK Wrestlemania matches. The story, action, and finish are going to make sure this match goes down as one of the best ever.

Cm punk vs John cena hands down!
And by reading all view points on the thread we all are accepting the fact that hhh vs taker was a close 2nd.
Well what constitutes a great classic match? Its buildup, crowd reactions, its star power, its drama, its action and in the end, its result.Punk vs Cena had all the ingredients to be the MOTY. Wm 27 taker vs hhh was fantastic and brutal. But it only missed the award due to the lack of 1 thing. The buildup...
Honorable Mentions:-
Miz vs JoMo
SD!Elimination Chamber.
Cody v Rey
Punk vs Orton match series.
JoMo vs Cena vs Miz
Alberto vs Christian ladder match
Christian vs Orton match series.
Edge vs Ziggler
SD!MITB Match.

Punk vs. Cena is the current WWE match of the year. There hasn't been that kind of reaction to a wrestling match since Rock vs. Hogan. The crowd, the angle and the drama of the match itself put this thing so far over the top, they are gonna be lucky to top it for along time.

The build up for hhh vs taker wm 27 was terrible and the match was wayyyy tooo slow to be a classic in my opinion, but it was still a good match. Their wm 17 match was wayy better.

100% agree. Their match this year was made to seem more important than it was, it was still good, but there are matches in all the major companies this year that blow that thing out of the water. Their match at WM 17 was better, and its a damn shame they didn't acknowledge it leading up to this year's match. Heaven forbid you educate some of the kids on the history of your own company.

Purely in scope of WWE nothing touches Cena vs. Punk so far.

The best match of the year, was prob Christian vs Randy Orton. If your just talking wrestling wise and the match its self. Cena/Punk was a good match, but it was the atmosphere that made it special. There were some sloppy moments in it and some botches. Nothing that bad, but the match itself prob wasnt the match of the year or deserve 5 stars. Very good though, and a classic ending, but overall for me, the Christian vs Randy Orton matches were better.

I am all for people having their own opinion and so fair play if you think Punk/Cena wasn't match of the year... but the whole thing about sloppy moments/botches.. THIS is the problem with most fans now, WHO CARES if sometimes things go off without a hitch and/or they do something that doesn't look like a choreographed dance routine... wrestling was NEVER that crisp. It was always rough and ready, and in my eyes those moments make it better. Rey/Cena from this past RAW for example, sure they messed up the headscissors reversal a tad, and maybe john cena didn't throw rey properly on the powerbomb BUT that just goes to show how much they wanted it, scrimping and scraping! Nobody in a fight, pre determined or not, would be able to hit everything picture perfect every time and in my eyes THAT is the very problem with independent wrestling and its fans... You fucked up? the constant pressure in trying to get everything so damn perfect and precise. Tell me a story and make it good, that is all I ask.

Cena/Punk did that, and it was a great match & I was on the edge of my seat for the last 20 mins wondering when it would end, what would happen. It was the best match of the year by miles.

Taking your opinion into consideration, saying that the match was "too slow" doesn't exactly warrant for it to not be considered or deemed MOTY, many classic matches were slow take Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat it wasn't the speed of Ladder match but it was precise and to the point. It was telling a story between the two, much like the "Last of the Outlaws" match up between Taker and HHH. They're both veterans in the business and they are fairly large and can read each other fairly well.

And I want to also tap into Remyx's point about matches not going exactly how they are supposed to and this is what makes me angry with the community (along with the dozen other things) a match is discussed before and sometimes during the match sometimes the talents think of some extra stuff that will wow the crowd and that what they have been doing, no, the moves and exchanges aren't always perfect but that's the point of a match UFC matches are not sparkly clean are they? No, they're rough and hard to predict and that's why people like them. I like it when they mess up sometimes because it makes a tad bit more real and unrehearsed, don't know why the community acts like that doesn't appeal to them.

Anyway Match of the Year was/is a close for me either Taker vs HHH or CM Punk vs Cena, they were great.

Very well said. I'm so sick of the IWC's overuse of the word "botch." You want a botch? D'Lo Brown dropping Droz on his head was a botch. Brock Lesnar coming up short on his SSP was a botch. There were no "botches" in the Cena/Punk match. A move not being executed perfectly is not a botch.

Professional wrestling is not executing every move perfectly. Just like it's not using as many weapons as possible, or flying around and jumping off as many things as possible. It's not about how realistic the moves look, or how well they're sold, or how many restholds there are. Professional wrestling is STORYTELLING. You can use any or all of the things I mentioned to tell a great story. Engaging the crowd and the viewers at home, getting them emotionally invested in the match.

No other match this year comes close to Cena vs Punk.

The crowd had a lot of play in why I picked cena punk there was good action also so it took the vote. But if it went on action alone I would have voted miz morrison that match was vicious.
