Duran Duran: Iconic Band or Not?

Lately, I've been wrestling with the question of whether or not Duran Duran should be placed in what I call the "second-tier of popular music greatness." I know they're nowhere near as important to popular music as the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson, but is it safe to consider them as significant as the likes of such artists/acts as David Bowie, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Police, Rod Stewart, and Genesis?

While I want to hear what some other people have to say first, I will say that, as of right now, I DO consider Duran Duran to be an iconic band. Besides having one of the most distinctive voices ever in Simon Le Bon, it's extremely hard to categorize what type of music Duran Duran is: saying that they're in a musical class of their own might be a stretch, but I do think that the combination of their popularity and singular sound is a testament to their greatness.
