Duke Nukem Movie

We should probably know better by now but the news that a Duke Nukem movie is in the works has made us momentarily forget all those abortive videogame movie adaptations and made our inner geek very excited indeed.

The hard-talking, gun-loving, bleached-blonde alpha male, beloved of first-person shoot ‘em up gamers since his IBM PC debut in 1991, is gearing up for the big-screen treatment and Scott Faye, the producer of the upcoming Mark Wahlberg thriller (and fellow game adaptation) Max Payne, is the man driving the project.

“I'm working diligently at making a Duke Nukem movie scenario that will live up to the character and its import in the videogame world,” said Faye talking to Kotaku.com. “As is the case with all of my game adaptations, I'd rather not make the movie than make a poor adaptation.”

We’ve yet to see Max Payne so we can’t confirm if Faye’s aspirations were actually realised but the idea of a movie featuring the Duke – imagine a cigar-chomping Arnold Schwarzenegger type with a yellow flat top and an arsenal of big guns and class-A zingers – has definitely piqued our interest.

“With the two new games coming out based on Duke Nukem (a pair of next-gen console adventures are in the pipeline), I'm working at establishing a Duke film scenario that will compel a studio to finance a feature version,” said Faye. “Certainly, there's a large audience that knows and loves this character. We're expanding Duke's ‘storyverse’ in a very significant major way without abandoning or negating any element that's being used to introduce Duke to the next gen platforms.”

If Faye’s reverential treatment comes to pass, it will certainly please Nukem fan boys. Let’s just hope it doesn’t go the way of all those other failed gaming flicks.

Possibly an adaptation too far. There hasn't been a Nukem game in years. So the people it appels to, probably about 15 or so, won't really know about the game. But on the other hand that might give the filmamkers more leeway to go a little darker. It could be like Doom, only not toned down so kids will be able to see it.

I don't think kids would be able to see it anyway...unless we're talking about the first two original Apogee classics, which don't feature strippers. An adaptation of those would probably go over well with generic action fans. I always thought Arnold Schwarzenegger would be the most fit to play the role of Duke Nukem, but that was back around 1996. I'd watch this movie just for nostalgic purposes.

Jake Busey would be great for Duke Nukem. He is chirpy like Duke Nukem, and if he could put on some muscles, he would be great for the film. Maybe he isnt a big enough named, but with proper build up, I can see it. Anyways, as of right now, a Duke Nukem movie doesnt appeal to me, despite my love for the video games. Not with all the recent similar movies, and the lack of Duke Nukem games in the past. If they release a game for Duke Nukem, and it does well, then release the movie in a couple years.

Even though is acting skills are very limited I would love to see Henry Rollins as Duke Nukem. That guy is freaking hardcore. Plus the guy has the build and can spit out one liners.
