Drowning Pool

King Of The Wasteland
This is a two parter in a way

So I was listening to my iTunes on shuffle and Drowning Pool came on and I was curious as to whether I should get more stuff by them (I've only got four songs)

I will admit that I've only got songs from Sinner (and the Rob Zombie collaboration) but I'm curious as to whether I should get more. I've been listening to Soil recently and liked it knowing that Ryan McCombs was in Drowning Pool for a while makes me intersted in checking out that material. Also is the second album any good???

Part two. Since Drowning Pool have a Spinal Tap thing with singers (they're currently on their fourth) I was interested in knowing which ones you thought were suited best for the band and if you could pick a singer to join the band who would it be.

If I were to pick a singer for the band I'd pick Patrick Lachman. He was the singer for Damageplan with Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul after Pantera broke up. I picked him because his style I felt would compliment them and he can do some pretty good melodic bits as well

So yeah, is Drowning Pool's other albums worth getting into and who would you pick for a vocalist for them??

Cant say i'm too big up on contemporary popular rock enough to know who should man the helm of Drowning pool, but I can tell you from having the first two albums that the second one is definitely a decent listen.

Cant even remeber what its called, but its got a hot chick on the front with a baseball bat! The guitar work on it is class, in terms of that style of music and for what the drowning pool guy does. Cool vibes, catchy songs. Love and war is a great song.

I was worried getting it because of the new vocalist, but he does a great job, doesnt try to mimic the old guy, but he still suits the style! Go for it!

Like 99% of the people who will have listened to Drowning Pool on these forums, I got into them through the WWF's extensive use of their songs as theme music for pay per views in 2001 and beyond.

I bought the album Sinner off the strengths of 'Bodies' (Summerslam 2001, later ECW), 'Sinner' (Vengeance 2001), and 'Tear Away' (Wrestlemania X8). To this day, I don't think there is a bad song on that album.

However, the untimely death of singer Dave Williams in 2002 caused the band to change their musical direction, and to be frank, I didn't enjoy it. They had dropped the edgy, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, broodiness of the first album, in favour of a generic hard radio rock sound. Whether or not this shift would have occurred if Dave had not suddenly departed this world cannot be said, although I'd believe that the surviving members of the band opted to play more upbeat music in memory of their lost friend.

On a different note, is the current singer Jason Moreno any relation to Deftones' Chino Moreno?

Drowning Pool went on to continue on with the name for Dave "Stage" Williams. I remember reading a magazine article of the band explaining this. I just cannot remember which magazine it was from. I do know that there sound was going to change after Williams passed away. It usually happens when another singer joins an already created band.

I loved the first album, by far it is the best DP album to date. It had a totally different sound and it was in your face style. I also wonder what and how DP sound would of progressed if Williams was alive.

I also like the Jason "Gong" Jones album too. It was pretty heavy and almost kept the original sound to the first DP album. I like how he sang his own way and did not try to mimic Williams in any way. It was fast and edgy even if it was a more radio style sound. I still enjoyed it. If you like Gong's style of singing, I believe he is front-man for another band that is also pretty good.

As for the other singers, all I know is they had the former front-man from Soil singing for them. I heard a few tracks and I just could not get into it. The sound was totally changed.

As for a new singer, I think I agree with the OP as I have been wondering where Pat has been. I would give this a listen to as I think he put the edginess back into DP that they have seem to lost over the years.

RIP DAVE "STAGE" WILLIAMS.

Alex, I am the same as you. I have been considering buying myself a Drowning Pool album, as I have been listening to the couple of tracks I have off "Sinner" (Bodies and Tear Away), and I still think they are pretty great tracks.

I also have their cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell" (surprisingly good!) and "Love & War" which I like too. To be honest, I haven't heard a bad song by them so far!

I would probably go with "Sinner" as album to buy, as you already know you like a couple of tracks off that album and the rest are likely to be in a similar style, as it will be the same vocalist, so go for that one. Or, if you want something different get the album with Ryan from Soil on vocals, he has a great voice.

I think I am gonna order "Sinner" off Amazon myself.

"Bodies", "Sinner", "Step Up", "Tear Away", '36 Stitches", "The Game"

Those are all the songs on my playlist from Drowning Pool. They stay with the same style despite their constant line-up chances. The differences are very hard to notice on the sound alone. It does make them seem somewhat consistent despite the changes.

The Sinner album is one of my favorites.. ever. but after their original lead singer died, I haven't been able to listen to them all that much, their singers haven't ever really clicked for me. They haven't been bad, but the sound and style just isn't really for me i guess.
