Do you leave your computer on

or shut it down, or just put it on sleep? I leave mine on the majority of the time. There's both negative effects for leaving the computer on, and shuting it off. I think the current statistics favor leaving it on, so I figured it was better for my computer in the long-term, and more convinient for me.

I leave mine on all the time, because you're right, it's kind of a draw on which is the easiest on your computer and which burns more energy (leaving it on steadily, or causing a surge of extra energy upon startup).
My monitor is on energy saving mode after half an hour, so I figure that helps.

Mine gets shut down around once every month, when I build up enough background junk that I start getting slowdown.

Other than that it stays on 24/7. I'm hoping that if I waste enough energy I can contribute enough towards global warming that the next generation of humanity gets wiped out.

I'll be damned if anyones getting the satisfaction of being alive once I'm gone.

Leaving a windows pc on is bad. It needs to restart in order to set up updates and other such thing. There are other negatives, especially with labtops.

As screwed as mine already is visibly, no telling how bad it is with all those negatives of leaving it on all the time.

Sarcasm? Windows really does run more inefficiently when you don't turn it off regularly.

If you were serious and your pc runs slow, then try uninstalling and deleting any bloatware you have.

Not really. In all honesty, it depends on what kind of machine you have, and what you are running. While shutting down and restarting does help clean useless files, there are ton of programs out there that can do the same thing. As far as updates go, that only matters if you have automatic updates turned on. Worried about a storm knocking your power out? Get a battery backup with a surge protector. Those will USUALLY save your computer (I say usually because our school server is shot...thanks ice storm). And, from the latest I've heard, if you are a regular computer user, shutting down and turning your computer back on takes every bit as much energy as it does to allow your computer to go into sleep mode.

So, like I said...not really.

There are other negatives, especially with labtops.

No, I'm serious. It's still pretty fast though when Firefox isn't being a bitch.
How old is your computer, how much RAM do you have, and which version of Firefox do you have?

Firefox 3 is a resource hog. If you're running an older computer, with 512 RAM or less, it would explain the problems with Firefox.
