At the moment in the three brands of WWE there are two face General Managers, and TNA's authority figures of Foley and Cornette are also faces, but does this work.
History has shown that friction between the boss and a face megastar works - as a long list of feuds with Mr. McMahon proves, as well as feuds with his children, and more recently, Mr. Kennedy's feud with William Regal and just about every Smackdown face's with Vickie.
You can even trace it back to Jack Tunney's patent disliking of Hulk Hogan, despite the fact that he wasn't a heel per se, the tension certainly brought something to the table.
However, now we have predominantly face General Managers, can we expect anything as exciting?
Orton's situation is an oddity, but the reason he has kept his jo is explained by legal loopholes. When Jericho tried to feud with Stephanie he was fired, and it is hard to see how the heel would keep his job in normal circumstances.
In TNA they have solved the problem by havng all of the big names side together in order to create a force to be reckoned with and providing security for themselves. However, this presents its own problems.
In WWE, Stephanie's feud with orton is great, but where can it go? Once it's over, it is difficult to see how she could maintain being so active in feuds without turning heel.
This is what has happened to Theodore Long - he is hardly active. He makes fights, but he rarely uestions heelish tactics such as the way Swagger won the ECW title using the exposed turnbuckle. when he was Smackdown GM, they made the character of Palmer Cannon to go over his head, because his face persona could not maintain interesting feuds.
I think that the overall conclusion to draw is that face authority figures have limited lifespans, certainly in terms of actively engaging in storylines, and that as a result, we can probably expect to see some of the current ones witching allegiances in the near future.
