After some complaining about movie violence and saying it makes you tough, mixed with a story I read, it got me thinking. Say you're somewhere and then someone dies. Of any given cause. Illness, injure, homicide, whatever. What do you think your reaction would be? What if the person is close or someone you never met? Would it influence your reaction? My inspiration comes from a story called "Andre's Mother" where a young homosexual died of AIDS. 4 of the people closest to him gather to remember him before releasing balloons into the air signaling them coming in terms with the person's death. Despite all being really close to the deceased, they all react very differently to his death. Some come in terms rather quickly. One of which considered the deceased character as a son and the other as a brother. But the mother has a very hard time. The lover not so much, though still expressing great sadness.
The detail is that despite him being so close to them, they react very differently. Thus I turn that into the question here. How would you react to seeing a person die? Would your reaction be different if you didn't know the person? What would influence your reaction?
During my life, I got to see the death of my great-grandparents. But I never really had much of a reaction to any of them other than a bit of shock. However, as ridiculous as it will sound, the death of a baby horse I had brought out much more emotion than that of any of my relatives. The reason being that I got to see the animal get injured, I took care of it while it was injured, but despite showing so much energy and enthusiasm, the animal couldn't be saved and was put down due to how injured it was. My great grandparents died of age and got to live their lives fully. The baby horse got injured and died simply because of it being too severe. Despite it's condition, it was always reacting cheerfully to anyone approaching and showed lots of energy even though it couldn't even move and had half of it's body rotting. It made me a lot more sad than actual people.
