The Dark Knight Rises will take place 8 years after The Dark Knight ends.

that certainly opens a lot of things up.

And much like the Dark Knight, the opening of the movie will be attached to another film. If you can stomach sitting through another Mission Impossible movie, you'll get to see Bane's origin. Supposedly the official trailer will be attached to Sherlock Holmes.
