Could not being able to cut a good promo a good thing?

For talented wrestlers that are struggling on the mic be a benefit for them? Jack Swagger, that lisp is a killer right? Why not have a storyline where, I don't know, a mid-card face like Kofi Kingston say stuff like "your to nervous to talk in front of these people, you don't deserve to be here" And have Swagger get so irritated with not being able to get over, he becomes a dominate force by reacting with actions instead of words. Or a different case, Alberto Del Rio, boring as hell. Have someone say the same kind of stuff and make Del Rio dominate but not say anything. It's kind of hard to explain, but if you get it, your thoughts, opinions on this.

I get what you mean and I agree lack of mic work can add a certain intensity to a character. I think your idea is really good as a means of getting Swagger more over by actually capitalising on his awful mic skills. It worked for Lesnar, my only concern with Swag and Del Rio is they don't really come across as physically intimidating as Lesnar purely to look at so may struggle to put across the same feeling of intensity. But in essence yeah a big intense guy who doesn't talk much, or even uses a manager as a mouthpiece is a gimmick that definently can work in WWE.

They need to start bringing back managers to handle the guys with great ring work but no mike skills. I can kind of see where your going with your idea, how bout a wrestler with no mike skills that starts attacking and beating the hell out of some of the guys with good mike skills and his gimmick is ACTION not WORDS...he's tired of guys getting over just cause they can talk not because they can wreslte? Mason Ryan for this gig (maybe after a little more sharpening of skills down on the farm?

Ask John Morrison how well not being able to cut a promo works in furthering your career.

Entertainment is the biggest part of the WWE, and if a wrestler cannot cut a promo, they lose part of that entertainment factor. If they cannot entertain, they have no place in the WWE.

Sometimes people just suck. Swagger has a lisp but that's the least of his problems. He's dopey. He's awkward and goofy and moves around like a Gorilla with Parkinson's disease.

What swagger makes is a good heel. He reminds me of Biff from Back to the Future. Biff had tons of catchphrases and Swagger has none. There is your problem. He has no material.

As far as the topic. Everyone has slip of the tongue. I mean CM Punk stumbled on a few words tonight. Miz will use the wrong words sometimes. Cena improving literally admitted that he's missing balls. Rock had his promo written on his wrist (which I think he never used but was a prop for Cena to bash him on). Nobodies perfect, but they make it work. The thing is you have to have a natural instinct and material to sink your teeth into. The most successful promos have always been from the heart with a level of truth to them. And if you truly suck, people are going to notice no matter what material you are given.

In conclusion, if Swagger gets material, it may work for a while, but I don't think he is talented enough to get over as a main event guy. Because he is too dopey. Unless that is his character. There is no hiding the fact he is dopey.

I think you're right about the managers. People in this thread are mentioning Lesnar who got over without great mic skills, but are forgetting that he was managed by Paul Paul Heyman, who is undoubtedly fantastic on the mic.

In the current day there's people like Vicky, who is one of the biggest (non-wrestling) heels in the company.

While I do think for certain people, like Swagger, a non-talking gimmick could work, I also think managers need to be brought back too.

Cutting a good promo is a huge part of entertainment!! If a wrestler cannot cut a good promo then IMO they have no business in the E or TNA!! Even a decent promo is better than just blabbering and making no sense on the stick!! If they cannot cut a good promo then dont have them talk. They better be damn good wrestlers if they cant talk on the stick and again only my OPINION

Not having mic skills only works for intimidating monster types, like Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, Umaga, etc....

And notice, two of the guys I mentioned were managed by dudes who are great on the stick in Paul Heyman and Armando Alejandro Estrada. And the third, Goldberg, had his career start it's slow decline once he started talking.

Mic skills of some sort are absolutely necessary for continued success in the wrasslin' business.

Mic skills are useful but not necessarily needed to get over a younger wrestler, if they have a great manager. Brett Hart had Jimmy Hart, Undertaker had Paul Bearer, even Hulk Hogan was manged by Classy Freddie Blassie early in his carreer.

Interesting idea. A talent can't cut a good promo but the company still wants to feature that person so they give him a talented mouthpiece to help him get over and/or give him wins to get him over with the audience.

I think it can work for the right guy but it may be too late for someone like Swagger. In the long run a guy needs to develop on the mic to have a high 10 plus year career at the WWE level.

I've always preferred that a wrestler be able to good mic work. It's a huge confidence boost and makes their character over with the crowd that much more. Even with beasts like Undertaker, Kane, half of the Dungeon of Doom, etc when they first came out. Usually it is used to mask someone's inability but if they go to long without letting them talk, the character has issues evolving.

If I remember correctly, Bert Hart wasn't so great on the mic...YET, he could back it up in the ring and still got over with the fans. On top of that, he was WWF Champion about 5 times.

Although, times have changed since the 90s...WWE won't push unless you have mic skills and wrestling ability. There could be another way around it, but this would be a long and tricky road for anyone like Kofi Kingston.
