Correct The Award: PWI Manager Of The Year

The Brain

King Of The Ring
I was planning on wrapping up the PWI Award series today, but I’ve found a little more to talk about. Manager of the Year is a defunct award now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look at the list anyway. Woman of the Year replaced this award in 1999 so you’ll have to go back a little further in your memory to argue this one.

This is another that’s tough to argue for me. I’ll say Harley Race deserved the award over Jim Cornette in 1993. Don’t get me wrong, Cornette had a great year. I just feel Race was slightly better. Race managed Vader throughout 1993 and Vader dominated wrestling that year. Cornette managed Yokozuna in the WWF, but Yoko was already champ by the time Cornette joined him. If Cornette actually led Yoko to the title I’d probably give him the edge. I know this isn’t my best argument, but honestly this list looks pretty good and 1993 is kind of a coin toss for me.

I totally agree with you on this.

Harley race was a better manager that year. It was quite believable that he truly mentored Vader because we saw some of Harley's traits emerging in Vader's in ring work (brutality, stiffness, anger). Plus, Harley didn't need a cheap gimmick (tennis racket) to help Vader win. He would just pummel someone when the ref wasn't looking.

The icing on the cake for me is that Cornette was not the sole manager of Yokozuna. Mr. Fuji was his manager also. Cornette officially came on as Yoko's spokesman and advisor during his feud with Lex Luger, prior to Summerslam 1993.

I'm going to go one year later and say that Ted Dibiase deserved the award over Jimmy Hart in 1994. I honestly think Hart appeared at only 2 ppv's over the entire year and I believe Hogan was the only guy that he managed that year.

In 1994 Ted Dibiase created the Million Dollar Corporation, a stable that he managed. He appeared in IRS's corner at the KOTR that year. Then at arguably the WWE's second biggest ppv, Summerslam, Dibiase appeared three times. First he managed IRS and Bam Bam Bigelow to victory over the Headshrinkers. He then distracted Lex Luger in his match against Tatanka giving Tatanka the victory and revealing that he was the newest member in Dibiase's Corporation. He finally appeared in the main event as the manager for the fake Undertaker. At the final ppv of the year, Survivor Series, Dibiase managed his Million Dollar team to victory over a Lex Luger led team.

I'll take Dibiase creating a stable, managing at 3 of the WWE's 5 ppvs that year, and pulling triple duty and Summerslam over Jimmy Hart following Hulk Hogan around at a couple pay per views.

I'm glad you brought this up. I was really thinking about saying Dibiase for 1994, but for some reason I got my facts mixed up. I was thinking Jimmy Hart turned on Hogan to manage the rookie Giant and got the WCW title off Hogan. Then it occured to me that happened in 1995. I don't know what I was thinking. Good call Big Sexy. Too bad I have to spread some rep before getting you again.
