Colts Cut Bob Sanders

Big Papa Panty Droppa
Colts have made a very intresting move today. They have released long time SS Bob Sanders. While he was injured more than he played, he had a HUGE Impact on the Colts Defense. With releasing him, do they get more money for Manning and if they don't, did they just get tired of having him be on the roster and getting a paycheck for doing nothing??? My big questin as an avid football fan, who replaces him???? Do they sign a veteran SS or draft one??? Maybe the most important question, who steps up for that defense and gets his INT's and other big plays.

Not that surprising. Sanders has just taken to many big hits in his career and is way to injury prone. I'm sure if he took a pay cut then the Colts would have considered keeping him but with big named defensive contracts such as Robert Mathis and Antoine Bethea up this off season it just doesn't make sense to keep a guy who is always injured and possibly loss two of the three best defensive players on the team. Not to mention Mevlin Bullit has been a fine back up for Sanders and plays just as good at this point. Bullit has basically been that starter at that spot for the last 3 seasons and he doesn't even make nearly the kind of money Sanders made. Not a bad or surprising move at all. As for who takes his spot, well, Bethea took over for Sanders a couple years ago. Bethea plays just as hard, hits as hard, and doesn't get injured. Sanders has been a non factor for awhile now.

I'm not too sure of that. I read that Sanders played in 9 out of the last 48 regular season games. If that's the case, no amount of pay cut would be worth keeping him. It's sad that he's so injury prone, but he does the team no good at all when he's on the sidelines. Injuries that keep a player out of the game are the hardest thing for the team to deal with. When he's playing with an injury, the player is probably less effective, but at least he's helping the team as best he can. When he's out of the game with injury, the team gets absolutely no benefit from the player......yet they have to pay him, anyway.

A team hangs on to a player because they hope he will recover from the injury and be of benefit to them again. In Sanders case, the Colts simply didn't feel it was ever going to happen.....and you can't blame them for that. Sad.

Yeah no surprise here. Sanders will catch on somewhere else and if he stays healthy he'd really improve whatever defense he is on. I think the Colts will be fine without him. Melvin Bullitt is a damn good safety and has filled in nicely in the past for Sanders. I believe last season he got some of the injury bug that hit the Colts so of course his impact was missed as well last year. Plus they still have Bethea who is one of the best safeties in the game and a real game changer. Colts will be fine without Sanders if they can keep the core of their defense around. With Freeney, Mathis, Brackett, Sessions, Bethea, and Bullitt still around they will be a-ok.

Talk about a beast though. Sanders was a bad ass little guy on the field. I think he might have even played too hard. His injuries and also his games missed in his career is insane. A few years ago, it was always a question whether he would play. You would have thought eventually, through offseasons and what not, he would been healthy for at least one season. But it was never even close.

It's pretty sad because the guy was fun to watch and was a great player. But, as we all know, health is a big factor in sports. No matter how great you are, if you are not healthy enough to play, what good is the talent you have, while sitting on the bench?

Bob Sanders was the key to the Colts D for a long time. He was a hell of a player. The problem was he got injured to often and ended up being cut. I believe along with Shawn Taylor had their careers not been shortened the NFL would have 4 future HOF at safety with Ed Reed, Polamalu, Sanders, and Taylor.
