CM Punks heel turn sets up Austin/Punk @ Mania

Yeah, well, that's D-Man. I mean, it's D-Man.

I thought that the appeal behind Austin/Punk was self-explanatory. So self-explanatory, in fact, that I've never considered how I might need to explain it.

Aren't you the guy who finds Alberto Del Rio appealing?

Like literally the only guy?

I'm not the only guy but I do like Alberto Del Rio even though CM Punk tried to bury the guy by saying he was boring. I don't see what that has to do with this thread though.

I understand some of the dream matches that have been discussed here. Cena and Rock are very similar while still being very different and both represent different eras. Hogan and Austin were the top guys during the two biggest wrestling boom periods. I'm not really into Taker and Sting but they have their similarities with their dark characters and how they were the cornerstones of their respective promotions for so long. Bret and Angle are both considered to be among the best mat wrestlers of the past couple decades but their careers barely missed overlaping. Austin vs Punk I just don't get. They don't really have anything in common. Their styles don't suggest that they would put on an outstanding match together. I'm sure they could do a good job together but I don't see what makes it really special. That would be like Hogan coming back in 2002 and working with Chris Jericho instead of The Rock.

I think it basically stems from the knowledge that generally wrestlers play their given character well when said characters are an on-screen extension of their off-screen selves, or at least a facet of themselves.

Character-wise Stone Cold is the polar opposite of what CM Punk stands for in real life. Although his actual stance is that he doesn't harbour ill feeling to those who choose to lead a life with drugs and alcohol, it could easily be turned around to be an aspect of his character if he opposed a man like Stone Cold, really the epitome of Punk's begrudgements when it comes to substance abuse portrayal in wrestling because of his massive popularity and mainstream attention (Jeff Hardy doesn't count because his abuse issues were real).

I think what separates this alleged dream match from other such examples is that people can see:

- Two massively talented all-round workers.

- A natural slant or story for where a feud could hit off. Unlike when Hogan met The Rock, or Rock met Cena and the idea was merely "One huge star from one generation meets another huge star from another generation", there are real tangible character traits that could conflict and play off against each other to create a very natural, almost organic feud.

So although it may seem on paper that there is nothing that ties these two men together, it would be so effortless and potentially rewarding to put them together that it would be perhaps the greatest way you could return Stone Cold to the ring.

But, personally, I propose that there is more than just their clashing characters which draws these men together in the psyche of many.

Both men are genuinely outspoken. Both are fan-favoured tweeners that caused a significant shift in proceedings of their generations. Both can carry a feud on their words alone. Both are basically self-made guys that got held down and forced their way up through the concrete. And, let's face it, CM Punk is a huge Stone Cold mark. You've seen the pictures when he was younger.

I think there's a load of parallels between these men and so much of an angle that this feud would be an instant classic before anything even happens. So as far as dream match? I don't know how many people are in it merely for the match. But great feud? It seems so obvious that it would be a massive fuck up if it didn't work. Orton might not work, Cena probably would work but CM Punk almost certainly will work if they try to go through with it. That's my thought process anyway.

If Austin does break his neck and die, because he shouldn't wrestle, then at least we'll have endless SCSA threads, instead of the endless Benoit threads...

Someone has got to explain to me this fascination and obsession people have with seeing Punk vs. Austin. Is it just the "I love beer" vs. "I'm straightedge" promos that people want to see that badly?

You need someone to explain this to you?

Do you also need someone to explain why the grass is green and the sun is hot?

Go ahead. I'm dying to hear this and rip it apart. I mean, guys like Ricky and Brain don't get it either, but YOU, yes YOU, apparently get it. Go ahead. I'd love to hear this.

2 great workers, 2 great mic talents....2 guys that were suppose to be heel but the fans loved them so they cheered them anyway.

With Rock/Cena 2 and Taker/Brock most likely taking place at Mania...I'm going to have to ask you guys to explain to me WHY NOT??

Wait...this is the internet. I'm so stupid. Of course everyone wants Bryan/Punk at Wrestlemania!! How could I be so stupid?

No actually the right answer is Austin vs. Cena because people would actually pay to see that match, because Punk is one of those guys that is popular with smarks but is a big ratings threat.

Again, YOU ARE AN IDIOT!

Edit: Oh man I didn't even realize you were the idiot that started this. That explains a lot.

Hmmm....I guess all the fans are idiots too. I mean, we all know rematches don't sell at Wrestlemania, right? And there's no chance of Rock/Cena 2 happening of course, right?

CM Punk is the #2 guy in the company...and with the recent heel turn he could become much bigger. I just don't understand why a Punk/Austin match at Mania is frowned upon.

If you want to use the "Austin is past his prime/Over the hill/Too Old" nonsense then don't waste your time. It's professional wrestling...all you have to do is look at history to see that some of the greatest matches were with superstars way past their prime.

These two would be gold on the mic and would create a lot of interest and an interesting story for Wrestlemania.

Most of them are, yes.

I mean, we all know rematches don't sell at Wrestlemania, right? And there's no chance of Rock/Cena 2 happening of course, right?

A rematch with Rock would sell. So would a match with Austin. Almost anything with Cena would sell. Know what usually doesn't sell? Matches with CM Punk against people not named John Cena.

CM Punk is the #2 guy in the company

A distant second but second nonetheless.

...and with the recent heel turn he could become much bigger.

Yes because Punk has done SO well as a heel in the past. And because heels do SO well in WWE. And because Cena ALWAYS gets beaten by heels. And because heels ALWAYS go over faces in WWE. And because heels ALWAYS win in the end. Right?

I just don't understand why a Punk/Austin match at Mania is frowned upon.

It isn't frowned upon. It's smiled upon WAY too much.

If you want to use the "Austin is past his prime/Over the hill/Too Old" nonsense then don't waste your time.

You have a history of wasting your time with me so that would be your land, not mine.

It's professional wrestling...all you have to do is look at history to see that some of the greatest matches were with superstars way past their prime.

You also have to look at John Cena and see that he is better than CM Punk in just about every way possible.

These two would be gold on the mic and would create a lot of interest and an interesting story for Wrestlemania.

More like silver or bronze with some gold shards.
