Where do championships titles and belts derive from?
I don't mean where do particular championship derive from (like the World title originating in Bischoff's handing it to HHH), I mean the whole idea of these things.
I would guess the idea of champions started somewhere in legitimate sports, when it was decided to give purpose to the result of competition.
Titles, I would guess, are literally the right to call yourself the champion; the best. So Punk has the title of WWE Champion, much like a Packer's player has the title of Superbowl winner.
Belts are presumably lifted from boxing? But that still wouldn't explain why someone decided that as a reward, or symbol of victory, an oversized belt made of precious metals was the way to go.
