Buy a Satellite and Get a Free... GUN?!

Just saw this on CNN. Some Radio Shack in Montana has this promotion running where if you buy a satellite, they'll give you a free gun. A representative claims that it "really fits the area."

What has the world come to?

Society's come to people liking guns?

It's not like they're saying "buy a satellite and you're allowed to shoot one person in the face" or anything.

Yeah, the idea is pretty tasteless, but if the people of the area like guns (maybe they're hunters or something), then I guess it is a wise business venture.

I'm not necessarily defending it, just explaining why they're probably doing it.

I don't get it. Gun control is already an issue, but I'm just curious as to why Dish Network (the satellite provider) agreed to latch on. If something goes awry with one of those guns, that'll be some bad PR.

Also, the guns are handguns and shotguns. Now, I'm no hunting expert, but usually a rifle is used for hunting. I highly doubt that's the motive.

It's probably not up to Dish how a store intices people to buy their product. They might be shit outta luck, unless they can get out of whatever contract they have with the company.

Shotguns are used for some hunting. Handguns not so much.

But even still, shooting is a popular activity (as in shooting at ranges, or legally shooting wild animals), and likely very popular in that area. And the people who are getting the products are most definitely licensed and passed whatever clearances needed to legally acquire said weapon.

Yeah, the people get background checks and whatnot, but that doesn't mean they won't at some point do something wrong with those guns. I know it's a slim chance, but it comes down to the safety if the people.

Also, just read up on this some more, but it took the Dish Network affiliate about 6 months to agree with it and they barely did.

Eh. Guns can be used to kill innocent people, then the cops use guns to kill the criminals. So dangerous? Yes. Safety inducing? Yes.

It's not the gun that kills someone though. It's the person using the gun.

Have you ever been to Montana?, the entire state is pretty sprawled out, and lot of people are ranchers and shit that live out in the middle of nowhere, as in far from local law enforcement, so the whole "for your own protection" thing kinda fits

I'm of two minds. On one hand, I'm for some gun control, and handing one out along with a satellite dish isn't exactly setting the standard for safe gun use. On the other hand, the people who are using guns to commit crimes aren't going to buy a subscription to a television service in order to also get this gun, they're going to go buy one at a gun store, pawn shop, or acquire it illegally.

That's not to say they intend to use it wrongly, but what if they just "snap?" They'll have a gun in their hands. I mean, it's a slim chance, but nevertheless.

That's where the negative is. I support smart gun ownership, make sure that the people who buy guns know how to use them and will use them correctly.

It's just random. I mean who would stay at home watching tv if they had a gun? I know I wouldn't. I would be to busy out killing hoes and acting gangsta GTA style.

It doesn't matter if you have a gun in your hand if you "snap".

Prime example: Chris Benoit.

Haha, this immediately made me think of the Family Guy episode where (I believe) they are relocated or visiting Texas and Brian buys a bottle of whiskey and the clerk says "Ok, and here's your gun!"

Freaky similar!

It may be because I'm from England and we, you know, don't think everyone should be allowed guns, but this is legitimately shocking to me.

K, this is just unethical. I understand the "area" could be buying more sattelites for the gun, but hey if they get the gun they should be forced to have a firearms saftey test and register the gun and maybe have to have a valid hunting lisence before getting the gun. My gut tells me it would be a rifle of some sort because Montana is hunting country. If it was a handgun, that would just be dispicable...:disappointed:

If they didn't do the gun saftey tests and if they didn't register the gun...UGHHH why would they still be in business
