Brutus Beefcake

The Brain

King Of The Ring
When going through the old school section naturally we often see threads about the big names from the past. I myself just made one about Hulk Hogan earlier today. We see threads on Bret Hart, Steve Austin, Randy Savage, etc. If we drop down one tier the names Ted Dibiase, Curt Hennig, and Scott Hall come up often. This thread is dedicated to a man who made a pretty big impact during the Hulkamania era but hardly ever gets any recognition around here. If you’re reading this now you’ve obviously read the title so you know that man is Brutus The Barber Beefcake.

When I started watching wrestling Beefcake was just breaking away from the Dream Team and becoming the Barber. It wasn’t long until Beefcake became a personal favorite of mine. His unique look with the ripped tights, upbeat entrance music, and of course the after match hair cut made Beefcake a very likeable character. You probably won’t find too many four star matches from Beefcake but that didn’t stop him from being one of the most popular wrestlers in the WWF in the late 80s into 1990. Beefcake faced three of the most hated guys of that era at three consecutive WrestleManias; Honky Tonk Man at WM4, Ted Dibiase at WM5, and Mr. Perfect at WM6. He also got to feud with Randy Savage in Savage’s first feud after dropping the world title. That feud would lead to a main event match at SummerSlam 89 where Beefcake would team with Hulk Hogan. Brutus seemed like a natural IC champion and despite being a regular challenger to that title the gold always eluded the Barber. Beefcake’s life and career changed on July 4, 1990 when he suffered a near fatal parasailing accident. If not for the accident he likely would have won the IC title at SummerSlam. His popularity eventually led to Beefcake’s return to television as host of an interview segment appropriately titled The Barber Shop. The Barber Shop was destroyed shortly before WM8 and Beefcake would disappear from the WWF.

One week in early 1993, out of the blue, Sean Mooney made a special announcement as Superstars of Wrestling was ending. Brutus Beefcake was going to return to active competition. I was thrilled. I missed Beefcake and couldn’t be happier that he was returning. What I didn’t know was his return was going to be a brief one and just be a way to get Hulk Hogan back for WM9. Beefcake would leave the WWF for good shortly after WM9.

In 1994 he followed Hogan to WCW where he earned a reputation as Hogan’s lackey. I think when most fans think of Beefcake they think of nothing more than a Hogan lackey. That’s a shame. Sure his friendship with Hogan may have opened some doors, but Brutus Beefcake was once one of WWF’s most popular stars with or without Hogan. What are your thoughts on Brutus Beefcake? Why doesn’t he get any recognition by WWE today?

I was always a fan of Beefcake. His attire was always something to behold, I was always a fan of guys who wore the outrageous attires, Savage, Rude, Ventura, Billy Graham etc. His in-ring style was good too. He was a really solid performer, maybe not great at one particular thing, but really good at everything. I do think his lack of actual matches in WCW hurt his legacy...in fact I can't think of any match he had in WCW..I do remember his 450 different gimmick changes though. Zodiac, Bootyman, Disciple all were horrendous, if he was that tight with Hulk, the guy could have given him better gimmicks lol.

I was a fan of Beefcake's as well, he definitely embodied that comic book style of characters in that era, another guy like that is Rick Martel, you don't here people talking about him, but he was pretty good too. Anyways, I think the Disciple character was pretty cool, it seemed to go well with how fans would bow to Hogan when he came out in those days. He doesn't get talked about for the same reasons that Tito Santana, The Model Martel, Dino Bravo, Earthquake, Tugboat or any of the mid-carders from that era don't get talked about - they didn't stick around. He also wasn't the greatest wrestler, like you mentioned.

I have often wondered the story behind Brutus getting the rug pulled out from underneath him right before summerslam 88. The WWF invested a lot of time in the Beefcake/HTM feud. It just seems crazy to make such a dramatic change were definitely ready for the barber as IC champ. I'm not saying I'm unhappy with how things went down. I am a big Ultimate Warrior fan as well and he was a great champion. It just seems odd to make suck a sudden change when the Brutus was way over at the time.

I must agree Ed Leslie was great as Brutus" The Barber" Beefcake. I can remember his popularity surpassing some of the top guys at the time.

That being said, you guys seem to have forgotten the incident that changed his career. In 1990 he was in a para-sailing incident where his face was crushed. He did make it through the incident with his face rebuild with plates, nuts, and bolts but that incident pretty much stopped any future for him.

He did step into the ring after that. For a while he wore the "protective" face mask, then wrestled without it, but he became such a liability and risk after that, he couldnt really be used like everyone else could be. Everyone who stepped in the ring with him had to worry if they were going to be the guy who did a move wrong or oversold and collapsed his face in again.

Even though he was cleared to wrestle anddeemed okay to handle the bumps and beatings, this incident pretty much stopped his career and put him the tier of midcarder for the rest of time in wrestling.

Beefcake post the parasailing injury didn't really just stay in the midcard for the rest of his career. In WCW, when he feuded with Hogan, he did main event Starcade 1994. That being said, he really wasn't any good in the ring after his accident.

I always liked the Barber version of Brutus when I would watch old ppv's as a kid and he was certainly popular with the fans. I think part of the reason he isn't mentioned all that much is because he was never able to reach the peak of his character. He was only the Barber for about 3 years (not counting his short return in 1993) and his accident happened right as he was finally about to win the IC title.

All of the momentum he had was gone and he was never able to get it back. The Barber Shop segments didn't last very long and his return in 1993 was nothing more then a contributor to the angle of bringing Hogan back. As far as his WCW career went, that is the definition of uneventful. He portrayed about 5 different characters during his WCW run. When your most successful character in a company is "The Booty Man" then you know things aren't going your way.

Basically he was a very popular superstar in the WWF who just had all of his momentum stopped at the wrong time. Had his accident never happened then he'd at the very least be a one time IC champion and we may have seen him get a little recognition over the years.

Its a damn shame really what happened with the barber!! Before his accident he was right there on the edge of getting an ic title at least!! Why that never happend is beyond me!! Maybe Vinnie Mac just didnt believe he was the right fit.. Something was off about him he just didnt have that champion feeling to him!! After his accident which is tragic in itself well his career was done!! Its a shame what could have been with this guy!! He wore cool outfits very good on the mic had that swagger could wrestle and was over with the crowd!! Why he never got the Ic title i dont know im not Vinnie Mac (I only pretend im him on mondays)

Good post. I was watching Survivor Series 89 the other day and Beefcake was over. He wasn't a great wrestler, but he was a great character. I agree that Beefcake really lost all steam in his career after his accident. However, he was great for a short while.

I wan't to address the "Hogan lackey" aspect of Beefcake. Yes, Beefcake got a lot of jobs because he was Hogan's best friend. What the hell is wrong with that? That's what friends do for each other. Hogan got Beefcake in the door. Beefcake got himself over.

P.S. People talk about Beefcake getting jobs because of Hogan. If were going to talk about friends doing favors in wrestling, how come nobody ever brings up a couple guys named Ric Flair and Arn Anderson.

In WWE Beefcake was one of my favorites. The man does not get the respect he deserves in terms of his WWE career. When he went to WCW, I remember him being "the Booty man" which was quite possibly one of the worst gimmicks I've ever seen, especially when they added "the booty girl." The masked man angle he did in WCW when he attacked hogans knee with a pipe was very well written I thought. I don't think we'll ever see him in the HOF, but he deserves an honorable mention by all means.

Beefcake was mediocre on the mic... see his SummerSlam 89 promo and very mediocre in the ring. He was as popular as he was strictly based on his over the top character in the late 80's. Even before his accident, he was falling out of the midcard.

His run in WCW showed how he really didn't have that STAR POWER material.

I honestly believe that his whole career is due to Hogan and only Hogan..... idk who came up with the barber gimmick but that person deserves the credit also..
