Bring Back Doink!

Seriously guys,

I think the WWE needs to bring back the Doink character. Not neccesarily the original Doink Matt Bourne but someone who plays Doink very well and of course as a heel! because face doink sucked. Imagine how cool it would be if he walked in the audience during his entrance and scare little jimmies and take their Cena hats and Mysterio masks off. That would hilarious. I am not saying Doink for WWE champ, but I think he could be very entertaining. We already have clowns R-Truth and Santino but I hope they bring back the real clown of prowreslting!

what are your thoughts?

Really? I for one am so sick and tired of seeing bullshit boring corny antics in the WWE, we don't need to add to it. The last dorky character we had was Santino, who just died in a car crash(Joking), so lets keep it cool for right now and say NEXT to the doink idea.

I wouldn't mind seeing Doink appear, at least for a little bit. It would be a cool little piece of nostalgia, for me. Sure, it would get old, but if you're going to have comedy jobbers, then might as well make it a literal clown. I don't know if you could use him as a reoccurring character, nowadays. Like Punk himself said, this is kind of the, "Reality Era," where fans don't seem to want to see goofy stuff, anymore. I think that's one of the few reasons why older fans resent Cena; he just kind of looks dumb with his jorts and sweatbands. So sure, bringing back Doink or having one of the wrestlers on staff or in FCW don the Doink suit could be fun, but it just seems like you could easily overdo it. Remember when Benoit had to face Doink as a prank from...I think it was Rhino? That worked out fairly well. But, to have Doink as a reoccurring character who gets involved in story lines? I don't know how that would work out so well. Maybe if HHH started a new corporation and decided to mess with Punk in the same why Rhino messed with Benoit, then it could work; that seems like something McMahon would have done to mess with Stone Cold. I don't know how else you could do it.

Seriously, though...to the ones who are asking the OP what he's smoking, you kind of just need to get over yourselves. It's just wrestling *ducks from the chorus of boos and garbage*. I've already said that in no way do I think you could make Doink a staple in today's market, but seeing the suit once again is just a cute little piece of nostalgia. Also, if you don't remember, Matt Bourne was a good worker and a good performer. It's not like Doink constantly put on shitty matches. The character of course is completely unbelievable, but it was a different time and they got away with it, for a little while. Doink shouldn't be in Mania matches, again...that was too far. But, it really is just a wrestling show. This is probably the same logic that TNA has and I still think wrestling shows have to be approached with the same level of seriousness that the fans show it, but there are maybe one or two ways that Doink could be on TV again and it wouldn't be shameful or even that stupid. You also don't need to explain to me that it's shit like Doink that brought on the need for the nWo, because I was there and I remember it. All I'm saying is that they could do a lot worse than to just put him on TV one more time, and at least someone is getting work out of it. If a young guy gets a chance to be on TV, even if it is in the Doink costume, I'd consider that a good thing almost every time. Seriously, there are a lot dumber things they do all the time than to feature what actually is an iconic character, for his era.

Doink was a bad idea then and its one now. Yeah he wad entertaining, but its WWE 11...comedy acts are dead. Jack-Hammer said it in another post, there hasn't been a comedy act in 11 and I dont want it

Heel doink was great. He was played well by many different ppl. A lot of people have a natural fear of clowns. Hell, he is twice as good as the boggyman ever was.

At first it was a pretty strong idea, evil maniacal clown who was pretty fantastic in the ring, face doink was a TERRIBLE idea and had a far less accomplished wrestler portraying him.

Now Doink in this era? No save him for gimmick battle royals, maybe a royal rumble appearance and a few backstage skits... nothing more... no WAY!

Bring Doink and Dink back and make Khali the WWE and WHC champion. Seriously, if you read what I wrote and think it is just a horrible idea is, becuase it is. No Doink or Dink man sorry to kill ya buzz.

Hornswoggle pretty much is the modern day Doink. He's barely used, except when a heel needs to get more heat by attacking him (Chavo, Del Rio, etc.) I think if it was Doink instead of Hornswoggle, he'd end up a trainer on NXT or at the high point show up on Superstars. Making a RAW or SD main event would we like Wrestlemania for him at this point.

I miss "gimmicks". By gimmicks I don't mean Randy Orton going from Legend Killer to Viper to whatever he is now, without really ever acting any different. Everybody dresses the same, most people act very similar, and promo's have become very boring. Those days are clearly over because we are too "cool" for that now, but it's just sad that most of the character originality has been drained from wrestling.

People need to start taking chances again. Can't always just stick with what works: short hair, standard tights, large build, and "I'm going to kick your butt" style promo's. Yawn.

I think the white mask, colorful suit wearing clown character has run its course. We already have comedic relief in the form of R-Truth, Santino, and Zack Ryder. Thats about enough comedy we need.

You have got to be kidding me... You seriously want Doink The Clown to come through the audience to steal from people week after week?! What would that accomplish? You want my thoughts? Honestly, my thoughts are that it is a bad idea. Most of the current fans don't remember him, he's FAR too silly to fit in to the current product, and it seems like the only reason you want him there is because you don't like Cena or Mysterio (or possibly the fact that they have younger fans). I'm sick of the high pitched cheers, sure. But it just sounds dumb to me to bring back a clown from the 90's just so he can take stuff from the fans.

Personally, I'd give a try to a Doink-esque character if it were done the right way. In the old days, heel Doink was a prankster, and a violently dangerous one. He actually had some wrestling credibility in the beginning and was more than happy to uncork a few gag-weapons in order to get what he wanted. The sort of sinister maniacal type of clown could work and could be very well done, but only as a heel. Here's why:

1. Cheating: It's pretty much expected of this kind of character. This clown is going to cheat which is primarily a heel tactic.
2. Annoyance Factor: The vast majority of "normal" people find clowns annoying and this trait works best as a heel character rather than a face character.
3. Sinister Requirement: In order to keep this gimmick from becoming cheesy and kiddish (well, more cheesy and kiddish than it has to be) there must be a sinister side to it. This is wrestling, after all and anybody who cannot be taken as in some way dangerous might as well just be a manager.

That being said, there needs to be some dark comedy and perhaps an unconventional and intentionally humiliating side to his wrestling technique. The only person I can see doing such a gimmick (that's in the WWE now) is Santino. He has comedy wrestling down pat. However, with the right re-debut, "Husky" Harris could pull this off. This gimmick has the advantage that you don't have to be a ken doll to do it.

Nah, this shouldn't happen in any way whatsoever.

If this did happen, I can practically already hear the criticism for it. The PG bashers would be coming out of the woodwork for one thing and, for another, the Doink character was so cartoonishly lame that it just wouldn't work today. It didn't really work back in 1993 and wrestling itself did have a more "cartoonish" feeling about it.

The only way that I MIGHT be even remotely interested in something like this would be if they tried to do a gimmick with a skilled wrestler with a menacing presence & personality that likes to wear clown make-up on his face. If they went for someone who comes across as "unbalanced" but I don't mean unbalanced as in a Joker sort of way. We've seen enough of that crap with Sting over on TNA. Portray the guy as a heartless, sadistic sociopath that derives pleasure from hurting others, destroying their dreams, causing general unease & unrest, etc. could potentially be interesting. It'd definitely be a different sort of gimmick but, at the same time, there's jus sooooo much that could, and quite probably would, go wrong before it's all said and done. WWE would probably get criticized too not only from the IWC but all the various parents groups and various watchdog groups that are out there. Those people raised hell when WWE showed R-Truth taking a few puffs off of a cigarette when they filmed in London. They'd be up WWE's ass over a psychotic, deranged bastard that wears clown make-up on his face.

I’ve mentioned this before elsewhere, but being that the WWE is PG right now, now would be the time to bring back The Clown. There’s so much you can do with Doink in this day and age. You can have him as a Heel or a Face or both. Have a Face Doink and a Heel Doink. This could even help the Tag Team Division a little. I’d even go as far as having this as a cheap shot to TNA and Sting’s current persona.

Absolutely not. Doink was one of the worst characters that WWE ever made. First of all.... There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING more cheesy than a clown. Secondly, he would be eaten alive by Punk or Cena in sarcastic promos. Even if they brought in a heel version, how would an evil clown get over? Exactly. They could use similar characters who are not as cheesy. For instance, if Kizarny had not flopped he could have been a heel creepy carny worker. Similar concept as an evil clown but nowhere near as cheesy. Finally, I hate clowns. Detest them. Doink never happened. I blocked that out of my memory. This generation should not be exposed to that kind of torture.

Heel Doink was the shit but he definately was a product of his era, I happen to like face Doink too, when he points at his opponents and then back at himself, I know you wrasslin' fans want to be all serious but get real, its a stupid form of entertainment, let them go wild.

However no need to bring him back over the long term, special appearances for sure, I was just watching that Saturday Nights Main Event where he teamed with Eugene and Kane, but not to be a permanent character again, Santino was filling the role of comedy wrestler just fine and what with all thats going on with Punk there probably couldnt be a worse time for an Evil Clown. Unless you wanted to fued it with Punk, Russo booking there.

Comment...what if a storyline occurred where someone was resurrecting old gimmicks that concealed their identity to constantly attack and sabotage a current superstar? At first it will appear like Doink returned, then maybe a conquistador, and so on...sort of like how CM Punk portrayed Jeff Hardy, but only consistently where you didn't find out who the culprit was until the reveal? That would sort of bring Doink back, but you wouldn't be stuck watching him eventually go stale...

Honestly, I'd rather they just have Pee Wee Herman come in as a full time jobber and get his butt kicked from pillar to post than to see Doink back in action.

I wish the WWE would employ more gimmicks but most of what we can think of has probably already been done.

The problem with this is that people will immediately see Heath Ledger's Joker, which Sting is currently trying to do... Doink was on the way to being wrestlings version of the joker in 1993... some of his stuff, like the loaded cast and double doinks was actually pretty sinister for even the early 1990's... he hurt people, he didn't just make fun of them... Matt Borne was great at that...

Cody Rhodes is kind of doing the modern take of it right now with the bags and the sinister demeanour... his character could easily take on more "disfiguring" and mental scarring over time... it wouldn't be Doink but but could easily become the new scary villain... each defeat could see him get worse...

I think little nostalgia moments from here and there would be entertaining to watch, but not a full wrestler competing week after week.

I remember watching Doink back in the early 90s as heel Doink, those were classic memories. I think just a cameo somewhere once or twice. But mainly, leave him out of the company. We have enough clowns going around like Santino..

No Doink. Ever. Not on the Classics channel. Not on a cameo. Zach Ryder can't get TV time, but we want to get Doink back? For what?

However, a sinister kid-friendly character would be great and catch major heat. It's an obscure example, but look at Pedobear. He gets major heat IRL because he looks totally kid-friendly but (kayfabe) he's totally sinister and perverted. I'm not suggested WWE should develop a character that extreme, but maybe a weird pop-star (Michael Jackson-type) or a jackass sports athlete (LeBron James).

if doink was to show up and have a few random matches, just be used as a tool (so to speak), having him run around doing random stuff, that would be rather amusing. i actually like the idea, just, as long as he is only around for a limited time, cause, personally, eventually it would get annoying and doink would have to go, but for a little run then yea that could work.
