Mid-Card Championship Winner
Everyone forgets Flair- Ultimate Warrior was the feud at the time. Hart had rarely wrestled Flair, although they had some good matches on a European Tour. In the states after Flair regained the title, he did a short series of house shows vs Taker, then was promoted vs Warrior. Hart jumped im at the last minute because Flair was injured (ironically by a botched spot with Warrior) and Vince was quickly losing it with Warrior. The match vs Hart was taped to be shown on TV but Flair struggled so much that WWE decided only to show the finish.
Dont get me wrong, Hart was a hard working guy, he was popular, he wasnt tied to the steroid scandal like Hogan, he wasnt injured like Flair, hard to work with like Warrior, and Savage was wrestling less after his divorce and wasnt interested in the rigors of being champ. I think he was a good choice, a break from the 80's and from the steroids. I dont think he should be belittled for not being first choice. Who knows what happens if Flair doesnt get hurt, does he keep the belt and lose to Warrior at Survivor Series, does Vince still fire Warrior but give Brett a real feud and big main event win over Flair to be established ?
We'll never know, however if Flair wasnt hurt the title change would have been shown on TV, their European Tour matches prior were very good, as were their title rematches in late 92, early 93 after Flair returned from his ear injury. Its really the injury that prevented the title switch from being shown on TV.
As for Flair leaving he himself said Vince promised him he could leave anytime he wanted if he was unhappy. Vince was upset about the blood at WM but continued main eventing Flair most of the year. Supposedly when Flair asked about a release, Vince asked him about the Henning match and he agreed, leaving him on good terms with Vince.
