In an interview conducted with WZCW Superstar Steamboat Ricky, WZCW.com has learned that the former WZCW World Heavyweight Champion has decided to alter the name of his popular finishing maneuver, The Blunderbuss.
"With the incident that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School earlier this month, in good conscience, I cannot continue to allow the move to have any association with guns and/or gun violence," said Steamboat Ricky. "Even though there have been periods of my career where it seems like I have turned my back on the fans, in my heart, I love them all dearly. It breaks my heart that all of those people were killed because of these weapons."
Of course, Ricky is referring to the school shooting that occurred on December 14, 2012 in New Town, CT that left 26 people (20 of which were children) dead. A variety of guns were found at the scene, including a Bushmaster assault rifle.
"I've always been a big advocate of gun control, and though I'm sure that the vast majority of my fans understand that, in no way, does the name of my finishing maneuver mean to promote or support gun violence, I would rather minimize my contribution to the unconscious desensitization to gun violence that has occurred in our society."
"The Blunderbuss," of course, refers to the muzzle-loaded firearm used in the mid to late 18th century, and was particularly popular among seafaring pirates.
"I thought it would be a fun name for a move as it honors authentic pirate culture and seemed quite appropriate for a jawbreaker-type move. But some things are more important than wrestling. For me, this is."
Ricky has decided that his seated three-quarter facelock jawbreaker will be referred to as the "Deck Swabber" which he always thought had a better "brand feel" than "Blunderbuss" anyway...though he thinks that the jawbreaker is a more effective finishing maneuver than powerbomb altered into a facebuster that used to carry the "Deck Swabber" label.
When asked to give further details as to what had been happening between he and The New Church, Ricky would not address specifics. He said, "Shouldn't you be asking The Grand Mystique about that? You might find him in the glow-in-the-dark pajamas section at Target."
Ricky did assure us that WZCW has not seen the last of him. "I'll be back. And you'll be seeing me mopping decks with my opponents faces as I hit them with the Deck Swabber. But never do I want anyone to be permanently damaged by the things I do in the ring, and I do not want to promote the message that people should be seeking ultimate endings for others in the real-world. Some people might think I'm overreacting, some might not like the decision, but it's completely what feels right to me right now. For me, I can't think of any reason not to change it."
